Hist merge

[edit]
Swept in from the pub

I wouldn't wish a history merge upon my worst enemy (ok maybe i would), but Yankari National Park has been renamed Yankari Game Reserve since 2006, and both pages were edited in parallel unfortunately. This has been on RFC for a while. So, I totally understand not wanting to do a hist merge (if that's even possible here), but there must be some easy solution, no? Can we move Yankari Game Reserve to Yankari Game Reserve (temp), and then move Yankari National Park to Yankari Game Reserve, and then move Yankari Game Reserve (temp) to Yankari National Park, just sort of hot swapping them? And then we could add a note on the new Yankari Game Reserve talk page that says something along the lines of "Refer to Yankari National Park for edit history", much as we do for en.wp copy-pasting?

I feel like this is something we should have encountered before, but there is no policy page on it. My only stipulation is that it's good to use the proper move function and keep Page IDs the same, because while for most of us here we just log on to our desktops and get nice redirects, but you never know how people will be accessing (external apps, etc.) which may rely on consistent Page IDs (which is one reason why it is so emphasized on en.wp, etc.). IMO the swap via a third title seems like the best solution. On Wikipedia this is called a "round-robin move" (w:WP:Round-robin). —Granger (talk · contribs) 17:27, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yep think so too. LPfi any thoughts? Brycehughes (talk) 17:37, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ah damnit, I just tried this and I got as far as moving Yankari Game Reserve to Yankari Game Reserve (temp), but now I still can't move Yankari National Park on top of Yankari Game Reserve, even though it's now just a single edit (I can never figure out the rules around this). So I guess I will need an admin to complete this half-done round-robin move. Brycehughes (talk) 09:00, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes. The redirect need to have no history except its creation, and it needs to point to the page to be moved there, to be moved by non-admins. I don't have time for checking possible complications before the end of the Christmas season. –LPfi (talk) 09:23, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'll just annoy an admin in January about cleaning up my mess :-) Brycehughes (talk) 09:33, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've completed the round-robin move; let me know if anything looks amiss. And yes, I think moves like this do require an admin. —Granger (talk · contribs) 16:01, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
