In rural Japan there are no street addresses, and even locals don't know street names. As best I know, half the streets don't even have names. So if there's no GPS information, I don't see a good way of describing where these places are. If you wanna remove the GPS information, please first tell me how I'm supposed to describe these locations. Otherwise, the page only gets less useful. 203.179.254.218 06:40, 15 December 2009 (EST)

As per the external links policy, map services should not be linked to, because the idea is to have the information in the guide -- particularly so that it can be printed out and carried around. If there's no useful address (and often even if there is), then add directions. You've already been doing this, which in most cases is all that's needed.
Today, the lat/long fields in listing entries are woefully underused, to the best of my knowledge. I'd like to think it should be integrated with offline reading apps for devices with geolocation functions, but I'm not aware of any such creation yet. (Suitable devices in general are hard to find today, especially ones with true GPS rather than triangulating off of multiple cell towers... not an option in the boonies where there aren't enough towers for that.) Even if such apps were already available, having several dozen eight-digit coordinate pairs per article in text won't be helpful -- who wants to punch in that many coordinates manually? -- whereas directions are helpful for everyone. - (WT-en) D. Thanks for the clarification! (WT-en) Orcrist 07:08, 16 December 2009 (EST)
m.wikivoyage.org has shown lat and long for some time now, so my old comments no longer have relevance. --(WT-en) Orcrist 08:20, 18 October 2011 (EDT)

Addresses[edit]

In the cases where the addresses are included, I think priority should be given to romaji, that is, don't include information in Japanese without providing the pronunciation. Otherwise, it is difficult for the non-Japanese-reader to spot places that are in the same neighborhood, and the only use to them would be to show the physical printed page to a taxi driver.(WT-en) Texugo 07:52, 6 April 2010 (EDT)

I'll try to fill in romaji where I know it. (WT-en) Orcrist 10:48, 28 June 2010 (EDT)
Is it good to have addresses only in romaji, or in both kanji and romaji? 211.120.119.94 01:18, 30 June 2010 (EDT)
Apparently just romaji is good. See Wikivoyage_talk:Romanization#Romanization_of_Japanese_addresses. (WT-en) Orcrist 08:19, 30 June 2010 (EDT)
At the moment all of the addresses are in romaji, though as new listings are added that could change. That being said, most map sources don't show the (small) place names in romaji. Google Maps does an OK job but generally doesn't let you search in romaji, and I've added all of the current towns, villages, and hamlets to OpenStreetMap, which does let you search in romaji. So if you're trying to find where these obscure places are — many locals won't know many of the hamlet names — please try OpenStreetMap (or use GPS). --(WT-en) Orcrist 08:24, 18 October 2011 (EDT)

Outline[edit]

Is this page an outline? 203.179.254.218 06:32, 5 August 2010 (EDT)

No, I would say it is at guide level, --(WT-en) ClausHansen 09:46, 5 August 2010 (EDT)

Featured article?[edit]

What does this article need to be nominated at Dotm? /Yvwv (talk) 09:35, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like most of the listings were imported from Wikitravel more than ten years ago, and have only been adjusted for formatting issues. None of the listings has a date stamp. Are any of them still open? I don't think we should feature an article full of old information. Ground Zero (talk) 12:55, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
