Move tag to the bottom of the article[edit]

For the same reasons discussed at Template_talk:Style#Move_to_the_bottom_of_the_article, I propose to change the instructions for this template to advise editors to place this tag at the bottom of the article, rather than at the top of the article or at the top of a section:

  • This is an internal Wikivoyage matter. Housekeeping tags are not of interest to casual readers. Putting the traveller first means not putting these as the guest thing they read in an article.
  • It is only regular contributors who will act to move listings from city to district articles. It is naive to think that new readers are going to be motivated to start editing Wikivoyage because they see a movetodistrict tag at the top of an article.
  • These tags don't actually lead to much work being done. Most of them have been sitting around for years.

The outcome of the Style tag discussion was to implement this proposal. Ground Zero (talk) 13:04, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Generally such tags are best at the bottom of the page, or on the talk page. However this tag may discourage new editors from adding further listings to the huge city page and instead put them straight in the district page. Also the existing placement makes it clear which section needs work. AlasdairW (talk) 23:48, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As with the style tag, the tag should identify to editors what work needs to becdone on the article. Ground Zero (talk) 00:04, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If that's the case, then it should be put in invisible text, or an edit notice. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:20, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good point. A notice for editors should appear on the edit screen, rather than in the read screen. Ground Zero (talk) 09:42, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ground Zero: We have such similar things like on Asia where I've inserted an edit notice as the cities list has always been changed without discussion over time and time there (I smudged in a spelling notice as well), and also other edit notices such as Winter driving telling editors that the article uses Canadian spelling, and uses the 12 hour clock. The only issue with this though, is that creating an edit notice for every single city using the same format in plain text is time consuming, but a template can help solve it.
(but I'm not very keen to create a template as I've given up on waiting a month for just a mere simple shortcut, but I might work on it if needed) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 10:14, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've done an experimental edit notice on Vancouver. It works fine on desktop, but not on mobile. If needed, I can do some for all major discrictfied cities. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 02:22, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It would probably be easier to use hidden text in the article, i.e., using <!-- -->. Ground Zero (talk) 18:54, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have implemented this change. Ground Zero (talk) 18:54, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
