Category?[edit]

This template currently is using "Category:Outline itineraries". Was the intent to have an outline topic category, or to not use a special category here?

The outline itineraries are listed twice but with different formats: Category:Outline itineraries and Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Outlineitinerary. Categories give us the first list but we'd have the second list anyway.

I was going to start adding this Outlinetopic to some of the 171 articles which have both templates {{outline}} and {{traveltopic}}, but wanted to be sure the template is right first.

With this change in deletion policy, folks may want to start looking at some of these topics to see if they are already really usable level even without any further editing. --(WT-en) Bill in STL 20:46, 14 September 2010 (EDT)

My mistake, the category should be correct now. If there is consensus to delete the Category:Outline itineraries topic then the Category:Outline topics topic should also be deleted. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 14:08, 15 September 2010 (EDT)

Placement[edit]

Generally, we place status templates at the bottom of articles. For Literary travel, it has been placed at the top of the article. The edit history says: "(move outlinetopic to top to improve chances for rescue)". For this veryt brief article, either way it would likely be seen, but some are longer. Should these be at top or bottom. If top, should the similar "outlineitinerary" also be moved to top? ==(WT-en) Bill in STL 13:16, 15 September 2010 (EDT)

Template:Outlineitinerary is placed at the bottom of articles, so I would think it would be best to be consistent with that. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 14:00, 15 September 2010 (EDT)

Conflict with policy?[edit]

The threat of removal included in the message conflicts with the statements in Wikivoyage:Outline articles Mostly, though, outlines are a good thing. An outline is the framework that allows an article that started its life as a stub to grow and evolve into a full blown article. One Wikivoyager can start with an introductory paragraph with a bare outline, and other Wikivoyagers will come along and add more information to it. Someone else comes in and reformats the information according to the Manual of style, and someone else adds photos. Eventually, the bare outline becomes a healthy, useful guide. This has alarmed some new editors. who think their work is in imminent danger of deletion. They do not understand that an article has to be manually upgraded. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:13, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) The "deletion after one year" portion of this template was added per Wikivoyage:Deletion policy#Reasons to delete articles as we were trying to strike a balance between being permissive about new travel topics but trying to set a limit as to when stub topics could be discarded. There is probably room for compromise around the wording, but I've reverted to the old version (for now) since it was the result of a fairly long discussion on the topic.
Is there some way to emphasize that moving the topic beyond outline status within one year is all that's needed to keep it from a VFD? -- Ryan • (talk) • 06:26, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I would think this shouldnt be too difficult.
There is also a problem in that an outline may contain enough information to be useful, and worth keeping, but still not quite meet the criteria for usabletopic. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:57, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
