From Wikivoyage

Hi, Maj! Welcome to Wikivoyage! You can find out more about Wikivoyage on the Project:About page. If you have any questions or comments about how Wikivoyage works, post a message at the travellers' pub. I hope you enjoy helping us build a free, complete, up-to-date and reliable travel guide! -- (WT-en) Evan 07:51, 4 Aug 2003 (PDT)

Hey, so, you should throw your support behind Karen in the administrator nominations. -- (WT-en) Evan 20:05, 8 Sep 2003 (PDT) P.S. Mwah!

So, I finally got a start on Black Rock City, although it's as-of-yet still larval. I plan to outline the ideas of Burning Man in the "Understand" section, but I need some help with "See" and "Do". Any help or comment greatly appreciated. -- (WT-en) Evan 12:03, 7 Oct 2003 (PDT)

So, I keep seeing places where you put a link in to an article for US cities in the form "City name, State name". I think by the article naming conventions they should either be :

  1. just "City name" if they're unambiguous (examples: Denver, Minneapolis)
  2. "City name (State name)" if they conflict with another city (examples: Springfield (Missouri) and Springfield (Massachusetts), Kansas City (Kansas) and Kansas City (Missouri))
  3. "City name (city)" if they conflict with another kind of thing (like a state) (examples: New York (city), Washington (city))

I realize that the "City name, State name" form is the most common in the United States, and I could be convinced that it's better to use a form people are more familiar with. My only counterarguments are:

  • Using the "Something (Something else)" form is consistent for the entire world.
  • The MediaWiki software lets you write [[Kansas City (Kansas)|]] (note vertical pipe) and get out Kansas City (Kansas).

I've been changing the places I see "City name, State name" to one of the other forms when I find it. If you think this is wrong, let's wrestle it out on the naming conventions page. -- (WT-en) Evan 11:57, 29 Oct 2003 (PST)

Check out Walnut Creek! OK, it's a little disparaging, but I think Johnny did a great job. -- (WT-en) Evan 07:34, 31 Oct 2003 (PST)

Hey, don't worry. I figure we should be as kissy-face as possible on Wikivoyage. AH WUB OO SNOOKUMS! -- (WT-en) Evan 16:37, 10 Nov 2003 (PST)

Anything for the cause, eh? (WT-en) Majnoona

So, you realize we're just going to have to buckle down and write Grand Canyon, don't you? -- (WT-en) Evan 17:19, 10 Nov 2003 (PST)

Hello Maj. I am working on Death Valley without an existing template and would really like some feedback about style, content etc. if you have a chance. Thanks (WT-en) Ron 10:42, 11 Nov 2003 (PST)

Maj, I made several style changes to the Death Valley page and would appreciate some feedback on this if you have a chance. Thanks

OK, so Cardiff's in Wales

[edit]

Fine! Be that way.

Hey, check your email. I can't find anywhere to do Beaujolais nouveau night. -- (WT-en) Evan 14:11, 20 Nov 2003 (PST)

Hey, so, could you take a look at the colors on Main page/test page? It'd be nice to make them a bit different from Wikipedia's, and also if they went with the default theme we have, it'd be excellent. -- (WT-en) Evan 15:12, 27 Nov 2003 (PST)

Maj, thanks for your contribution to the new Main Page. I think the colour scheme works fine and I hope the other Wikivoyagers will think so too. (WT-en) DhDh 13:04, 28 Nov 2003 (PST)

Ugh. Sorry about the loss of "Destinations" on the front page -- it was actually my idea! Anyways, maybe you could try putting something back in? See one suggestion on Talk:Main Page/New layout. I gotta run to the bank before the guys get here! --(WT-en) Evan 14:34, 1 Dec 2003 (PST)

OK, I know I'm 13-years-old at heart, but I gotta say I love that the French Tourist Office Web site has a section on nudism. How cool is that? --(WT-en) Evan 17:12, 2 Dec 2003 (PST)

Hey, so, I know you're procrastinating and not studying, so I figured I'd bug you and make you go work on Nepal. Little steps! Little tiny steps! --(WT-en) Evan 10:41, 6 Dec 2003 (PST)

Good work on the Nepali phrasebook. Ek, chin, dvi didn't sound right so I switched them around - is that right? I don't know much Nepali, or Hindi or Gujarati, but I can count.

Can you type Nagari? You might want to put the Nagari spelling of the Nepali words in the phrasebook. I am going to put the Greek and Hebrew letters on those phrasebooks, once UTF8 is up.

Are you as crazy as your name implies? -(WT-en) phma 20:29, 6 Dec 2003 (PST)

OK, so you moved my list of Seattle districts to a talk page as "not useful". Would you care to say what, in your view would make it useful? I'm not sure how it is any less useful than lists of districts for many other cities. -- (WT-en) Jmabel 19:30, 31 Dec 2003 (PST)

Well we're trying to work this stuff out for a couple of different articles like Talk:Southern California and it seems to work best to start with the lists on the talk pages. Mostly it's because it's just a list right now, almost a visual map, and I wasn't sure if you meant to have that many Seattle/ articles or leave it as a list or what. I think the Seattle page is shaping up real well so it's a good time to start a discussion about how to deal with the districts. (WT-en) Majnoona
I agree. We mostly do lists of districts to make district articles. It's a way to make articles for huge cities more reasonable. I'm not sure a listing of all the neighborhoods is useful, although the information could be re-arranged to be part of a useful article. --(WT-en) Evan 01:34, 3 Jan 2004 (EST)
If I get time, I'd like to do articles on some (but not all) of the Seattle districts. Probably about 8-10 merit articles. The thing is, though, most tourists stay in downtown hotels, most Seattleites talk about places in terms of neighborhoods, and it is useful to have a clue whether they are talking about somewhere you can easily walk to (e.g. Pioneer Square, Belltown) or somewhere miles out of the center (Columbia City, Ballard). I don't know a non-copyrighted Seattle map; if I had that, I'd certainly be glad to use it as a basis to indicate what neighborhoods are where. -- (WT-en) Jmabel 13:39, 5 Jan 2004 (EST)

Script policy

[edit]

So, could you take a look at the Project:Script policy? I think it's probably a good start, but I'd like your opinion.

I did a first script nomination, for a script to check and fix spelling errors. See Project:Script nominations for details, and voice your support if you think it's a good idea. --(WT-en) Evan 21:41, 10 Jan 2004 (EST)

phma for admin

[edit]

Also, I nominated (WT-en) phma for admin status. He needs endorsement from a couple of existing admins, so... if you feel like it, please check out administrator nominations. --(WT-en) Evan 21:58, 10 Jan 2004 (EST)

Baksheesh

[edit]

Hey, so, have you seen India#Baksheesh? There's a discussion on Talk:India as to whether it's appropriate... I'm wondering what you think. --(WT-en) Evan 23:43, 13 Jan 2004 (EST)

Vandal

[edit]

Hey, do you think that [User:Joe|Joe] is the same person as [User:205.154.150.140]? I noticed a request on one of the help pages for emailed! assistance with the use of his user profile. Since he wanted it emailed to a hotmail address it made me think it might be the same person as our mystery IP vandal. Anyhow, Joe doesn't have a welcome, and I don't want to step on admin toes by adding it. ;) -- (WT-en) Mark 04:31, 14 Jan 2004 (EST)

I'm not sure if it's the same guy or not. Joe has sent me a bunch of email which makes me think he's just really confused and not actually a vandal. I pointed him at some help docs... but go ahead and welcome him!(WT-en) Majnoona

World 66

[edit]

d00d, did you see the new copyright policy at World 66?! How weird is that? --(WT-en) Evan 11:18, 19 Jan 2004 (EST)

Helsinki

[edit]

Hey, so, you should check out the Project:Main Page policy. When you add stuff to the front page, you should put it at the beginning of the list for the section it's in, and take the one of the end of the list. They're supposed to be ordered from newest to oldest. --(WT-en) Evan 11:25, 22 Jan 2004 (EST)

Contribs

[edit]

Thanks, I hope to get some time to add more! (WT-en) Fuzheado 00:11, 30 Jan 2004 (EST)

Meeting in London

[edit]

Do you and Evan want to meet up in London while you're over here? I'd be pleased to say hi while you're over here, and recommend some unusual things to see in the city... Is there an official Wikipedian meet? - (WT-en) MykReeve 17:12, 9 Feb 2004 (EST)

I've suggested a meeting place on Evan's talk page. meetup.com seems to have suggested a particularly random selection of possibilities... so I've suggested a nice pub, that doesn't get too busy in the evenings (despite being near the centre of the West End). 7pm will be fine for me.
The Round Table pub, near Leicester Square tube is pretty good, and usually fairly empty on a Monday night. It's here on a pedestrianised street called St Martin's Court, just behind Wyndham's Theatre. Like most London pubs, it has an intriguing history: The Round Table. Quite irritating that meetup.com won't let you suggest your own meeting locations without giving them money... not so keen on that aspect of the site. - (WT-en) MykReeve 17:21, 10 Feb 2004 (EST)
Does that sound OK? - (WT-en) MykReeve 12:25, 11 Feb 2004 (EST)
Hope this is still on. Will see you and Evan this evening. Any probs, drop me an email. - (WT-en) MykReeve 05:05, 16 Feb 2004 (EST)

Wechselbot

[edit]

I proposed a script called Wechselbot. What do you think? -(WT-en) phma 22:00, 22 Feb 2004 (EST)

Congrats on another published article!

[edit]

Good job! It's super to see the world recognizing you as a real CM expert, considering the huge role you played in making bricolage and its predicessors. -- (WT-en) Mark 15:47, 6 Mar 2004 (EST)

Bradford

[edit]

The Bradford trees are in bloom here. In a few months they'll bear minimal pears. -(WT-en) phma 21:37, 17 Mar 2004 (EST)

Admin nomination

[edit]

Maj, I've just nominated User:(WT-en) Huttite for admin status. Please have a look at Project:Administrator nominations. (WT-en) Dhum Dhum Akubra 11:05, 24 Mar 2004 (EST)

Referendum

[edit]

Please read what I wrote at Project:Article naming conventions. Your response was more diplomatic than Evan's, but still not in depth. (WT-en) Ronline 02:54, 14 May 2004 (EDT)

Thanks

[edit]

When you do get down to 'Godzone', maybe we could have an Antipodes conference! --(WT-en) Nzpcmad 04:22, 26 Jun 2004 (EDT)

Meeting in Montréal

[edit]

I signed up at Meetup and voted for Casa del Popolo too although I shan't be free for sure on 19 July. So depending on how many people you expect to show up I let you decide whether I'm important enough to have you guys change the date. As a matter of fact my July will be quite busy as my family is visiting from France, and I know you're leaving in August. Err... My telephone number is in my profile. :-) --(WT-en) Valmi 17:41, 29 Jun 2004 (EDT)

Comme je disais à User talk:(WT-en) Buddy1111, on se la fait cette rencontre ou non ? I guess you're pretty busy now, but it would be lovely to meet the numerous for a coffee or something someday, even though I personally haven't proved so active on WikiTravel finally... --(WT-en) Valmi 23:21, 26 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Read MoS

[edit]

Maj: Thanks for comments/edits of the Dakar page. I guess a RTFMoS would have been appropriate. I can't believe you removed the part about the French though :). Is this user talk page the apprpriate medium/way to communicate stuff like this?

[edit]

I read through the copyright notes and explanations, but one thing is still unclear - maybe you can help. All wikivoyage content is licensed under a CC license. But who is the copyright holder? Is it wikivoyage (which is what?) or the individual authors? If I decided to publish a book with my collected travel musings (note: this is a hypothetical question, I am interested in copyright issues - no need to insult my writing just now), but I had already posted some of it to wikivoyage, could I still license the original (before you edit it beyond recognition - joke!) as my content? NOTE: For those interested in Maj's answer, it's in my talk page ... Iphilipp

Image format

[edit]

I noticed the pictures you uploaded are in BMP format -- this is an uncompressed and terribly inefficient way of storing picture data. Could you convert them to JPG? (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:41, 25 Jul 2004 (EDT)

Yeah, sorry, I know my image-fu sucks. I don't have any software handy for doing anything useful. I was hoping it I got the image up someone would take it from there, but maybe they're more trouble than their worth... (WT-en) Majnoona 23:39, 25 Jul 2004 (EDT)

Swedish Wikivoyage

[edit]

Hello and thanks for the welcoming, I've been using Wikipedia for about six months and enjoy every minute of it even though it has turned into somekind of job nowadays. I'm looking foward to start the Swedish Wikivoyage soon Project:Swedish_Wikivoyage_Expedition.//(WT-en) softssa 16:09, 10 Aug 2004 (EDT)

Image:Image bug

[edit]

There's an image on the French Wikivoyage whose name begins "Image:Image:", and Quirk and Yann agree it should be deleted, but there's no link to delete it. Can you delete it directly? -(WT-en) phma 09:52, 21 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Deleting info

[edit]

Hello. If I guess it right (see User talk:(WT-en) Grin) you deleted the content of a page from the wiki (with history) without saving its contents to anywhere. Since the original page contained infos impossible to recreate, I think you shouldn't be overly satisfied. Just wanted you to know. (As you may have noticed I am not regularly checking wikivoyage, but this does not mean I would agree throwing out anything I wrote. On the wikis I am active it's not customary to throw away valuable information, so I reckon I would restrict myself editing there.) (answer, if any, on my talk page, thanks.) Bestest regards: --(WT-en) grin 12:52, Oct 5, 2004 (EDT)
