The Haast River Bridge

State Highway 6 (SH 6) is one of the South Island's most scenic and longest highways. Starting at Blenheim in Marlborough, the highway passes through a short segment of the Tasman Region before traversing through the West Coast before making its way down to the Queenstown-Lakes region and finally terminating in Invercargill in Southland, traversing a distance of 1,162 kilometres (722 mi).

The highway starts at 1 Blenheim and heads west passing 2 Renwick before making a turn north to cross the Wairau River – the first 16 km east/south of the river mostly passes through either residential areas or wineries. At Renwick, there is a turn-off to SH 63 towards the SH 6 junction at Glenhope, which is a more direct route to the West Coast, bypassing Nelson and the SH 60 junction. This route mostly parallels the Wairau River.

If you do decide to continue north-west on SH 6, be prepared for one windy ride up and then down towards Nelson. From Renwick, it's another 62 km to the border of the Nelson region, traversing through the towns of 3 Rai Valley and 4 Havelock, and should take around about 50 minutes on a good day.
