Hello! Welcome to Wikivoyage. Please take a sec to look at our copyleft and policies and guidelines, but feel free to plunge forward and edit some pages. Scanning the Manual of style, especially the article templates, can give you a good idea of how we like articles formatted. If you need help, check out Project:Help, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the travellers' pub.

Thanks for your work so far -- it's looking good! --(WT-en) Evan 11:33, 12 Mar 2004 (EST)

Good work on phrasebooks! You may want to look at the pseudo-phoneticization guide. I've been in Portugal, not Brazil, so if you think the Brazilian pronunciation sounds better, go ahead. -(WT-en) phma 23:25, 18 Mar 2004 (EST)

[edit]

Hey Paul, just for what it's worth the MoS has the links spelled out at the end of things like the listing for a book shope. I presume that this is so the link will still work if the page is printed out on paper. Not that I care about it much, just thought you would like to know. -- (WT-en) Mark 06:24, 24 May 2004 (EDT)

Please see Wikivoyage_talk:External_links#Unpacking URLs. -- (WT-en) Paul Richter 07:32, 24 May 2004 (EDT)
Hey cool! I didn't realize that the print version did that. Neat. Maybe somebody should change the MoS. -- (WT-en) Mark 07:45, 24 May 2004 (EDT)

Three points

[edit]

So, three points: first, much personal appreciation for your attention to detail in the guide. You've really improved the overall quality of work here, and I greatly appreciate it.

Second: I'm not sure why you've been adding self-links (links to the page on the same page) to articles. It seems like you're trying to highlight the first mention of the destination. What's the goal here? Why not use the three apostrophe format instead?

Third: the attraction listings has URLs at the end of the listing, not as a link for the attraction name. If you think that's wrong, please help edit the style guideline.

Anyways, thanks again. I hope these two last notes don't come across as harsh criticism, but more as things I've noticed in what you've been doing. --(WT-en) Evan 13:14, 8 Jun 2004 (EDT)

On both of these points, I realize that my style goes against prevailing practice (but not formally mandated guidelines). I really do think that my style is better -- which will be explained shortly -- and hope to propose changes to the style guidelines... which I've been meaning to do for some time. I'll hold off on the edits for the time being. -- (WT-en) Paul Richter 13:16, 9 Jun 2004 (EDT)
Augh! That's the second time I've done that (tried to note some MoS points and unintentionally got someone to say "I'll stop editing, then") in as many weeks. I really need to figure out how to say that better. Nevertheless, my point: please, don't stop editing! You're doing an excellent job. --(WT-en) Evan 13:46, 9 Jun 2004 (EDT)
No, no, no, don't worry. What I meant to say is I'll refrain specifically from replacing triple quotes with double brackets, and moving URLs from the end of a list item to within the attraction name itself. No point in having you chase me around from edit to edit. I certainly intend to continue editing in general and contributing material. And my top priority will be writing up proposed changes to the style guidelines. -- (WT-en) Paul Richter 03:39, 10 Jun 2004 (EDT)
[edit]

Thanks a ton for your note on Project:external links. It's pretty compelling; I've got some reservations, though, which I posted on that page. --(WT-en) Evan 23:30, 26 Jun 2004 (EDT)

See Talk:Vietnamese phrasebook#Pronunciation.  Minh Nguyễn 00:09, 2 Dec 2004 (EST)

Washington State

[edit]

I note you created Bellevue by adding a wiki link to Seattle/International District rather than Washington (state). Anyway, I added the link and restructured the Washington (state) article. Could you please drop by the Washington (state)article to see that I have linked it correctly. -- (WT-en) Huttite 19:26, 26 Mar 2005 (EST)

[edit]

Regarding your recent changes to Tokyo/Ebisu, where you took the link "out" of Yebisu Garden Place, please take a look at Project:External links#Link formatting outside listings so we can standardize on an approach. (WT-en) Jpatokal 04:19, 6 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Japanese go-between

[edit]

You sure you don't want to sign up as the Japanese Wikivoyage go-between? Your Japanese is way better than mine.

Alternatively, as I proposed to Evan, I can be a "half-go-between" handling ja-to-en reporting if we can find a native speaker, or you =), to take care of en-to-ja. (WT-en) Jpatokal 05:59, 9 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Heh, there's a reason I laid low until you clinched the vote :). (Though I never said I didn't want to either; my name's on the ballot...) Anyway, sure, I'd be glad to split the job. Would that mean I'd also be the "ja:User:Evan"? -- (WT-en) Paul Richter 06:21, 9 Jun 2005 (EDT)
Uh... so, diffusion of responsibility hasn't been a big plus so far with go-betweens. If you're really going to share this job, great. If neither one of you actually wants to do it, and "splitting the job" is just a euphemism for "not doing the job", then, jeez... It's not really that hard a job. --(WT-en) Evan 07:49, 9 Jun 2005 (EDT)
So Evan, you want to start writing reports in Japanese then? :P I think the division is clear enough: I write (in English) about ja-travel here, and Paul writes (in Japanese) about en-travel there.
But I think the real job is not writing reports, it's transmitting the Wikivoyage Way to the new version and its new users. And the more knowledgeable people we have doing this, the better. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:31, 9 Jun 2005 (EDT)
Absolutely, I agree completely. I know you guys are pretty responsible. I'm just grumpy because we've had such a horrible breakdown in communications between Wikivoyage language versions, and I've got no clue as to how to improve it. --(WT-en) Evan 11:24, 9 Jun 2005 (EDT)
I'm certainly willing to put in the effort, and I'm sure Jpatokal is as well -- I could do all of it if that's preferred. And I was mostly kidding about avoiding nomination and foisting it on Jpatokal. I put my name on the ballot and cast my vote like everybody else. -- (WT-en) Paul Richter 00:00, 10 Jun 2005 (EDT)
Paul, if you want to be the "full" go-between I'm all for it. My original idea envisioned that there'd be a native Japanese speaker with limited English skills, but obviously having a true bilingual is much better! I'll still be happy to admin and work in the background on technical stuff. (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:51, 10 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Administrative nomination

[edit]

You have been nominated for admin status on Wikivoyage. You can view the current discussion about this at Project:Administrator nominations. If you are interested, please indicate your willingness on Project:Administrator nominations. -- (WT-en) Colin 11:40, 13 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Templates on ja-wikivoyage

[edit]

Could you help sort out the templates on ja-wikivoyage? Shoestring's been doing a good job translating the content but the content headings are still in flux, I'd like to hammer this out ASAP so I can start bulk generation of country templates etc. (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:48, 5 Jul 2005 (EDT)

ja-wikivoyage

[edit]

Greetings -- could you keep an eye on ja-wikivoyage for the next couple of weeks? I'll be on the road and will have very spotty access to the Internet. (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:19, 31 Aug 2005 (EDT)

I'll at least try to, as I've been on a Wiki lull/hiatus for some time. Shoestring seems to have things under control in any case. -- (WT-en) Paul Richter 00:57, 31 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Admin nomination

Tibet

[edit]

Sorry Paul, I don't agree with you moving the comments about avoiding discussing the Tibet - China issue from 'Stay safe' to 'Respect'. Stay safe should discuss any matter that can be of potential danger to the traveler. Of course, crime is the major concern here. However, an article about trekking in an area with dangerous wildlife or in an area prone to rock falls should discuss these matters. Likewise, in some countries, talking about certain issues is dangerous and the traveler may find himself visited by the police and detained if he expresses his opinion about them openly. The China - Tibet 'relationship' is one such issue. Avoiding discussing this matter is not a matter a respect - who will you offend? It is purely a matter of staying safe - even if you yourself may not be in direct danger for discussing this matter, the locals that you are talking to are certainly at risk. I won't return the passage to Stay Safe, but hope you consider my point and I'll leave it up to you to decide which place you think is better. 9 Dec 05

YggdrasilBot

[edit]

I've got a proposal for a bot to do the cleanup work on breadcrumb navigation here: Project:Script nominations#YggdrasilBot. Your comment welcome, please. --(WT-en) Evan 00:04, 11 Dec 2005 (EST)

Rentasaikuru no risuto

[edit]

Could you add in your two cents into the great レンタサイクルのリスト debate on ja? My command of Japanese is just not sufficient to outline why lists like this are completely against what we should be doing... (WT-en) Jpatokal 02:46, 3 March 2006 (EST)

Yeah, I've been trying to follow the copious, headache-inducing debate and don't really know where/how to plunge in, but it's clear to me that it doesn't belong, just like the erstwhile hitchhiking list here on en. -- (WT-en) Paul Richter 02:52, 3 March 2006 (EST)
To me the answer seems obvious: "Cycling in Japan" makes a travel topic and the individual shops should go into the destination pages... (WT-en) Jpatokal 03:07, 3 March 2006 (EST)

Kichijoji Iseya

[edit]

The article that you removed mentions another branch of the restaurant. Have both been torn down, or would it be better to leave in a mention of the other branch if it's still there? (WT-en) Nick San 05:27, 25 September 2006 (EDT)

Admin nomination

reference to guidebooks

[edit]

Dear Paul, I just found discussion Project:External links#Guidebooks (Reference to) where you participated. I thought you might have something to say on User:(WT-en) DenisYurkin/Paper travel guides in its talk page--and maybe even help to make that article acceptable for Wikivoyage standards. Thank you. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 16:39, 7 February 2007 (EST)

Brazilian cities

[edit]

Paul, you've been a great contributor to the Brazil article, which now needs to have its list of cities seriously downsized. I've come up with a proposal based on government statistics. Those do not necessarily reflect the needs and views of English-speaking travellers, so as you are very familiar with the country, maybe you'd like to join the discussion and help deciding which cities to keep~on the list. Thanks, (WT-en) Ricardo (Rmx) 19:44, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

Santa Cruz disambiguation

[edit]

Can we revert this edit - ? - the revised Santa Cruz (disambiguation) article now has a "Brazil" section. The reason I created Santa Cruz (Brazil) was because that name isn't going to be a valid disambiguation for any one article, but that might not have been obvious to whoever creates the first Santa Cruz article(s) for Brazil. ~ 61.91.191.10 03:37, 2 April 2007 (EDT)

Hi, I notice you lived in Seattle for a large amount of time, please could you help us out in breaking the article up into districts? We are currently discussing how best to redefine the districts - there are currently way too many with little or no info present. -- (WT-en) Tim (writeme!) 10:05, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

Internet Brands

[edit]

Greetings, Paul. I'm John, the Gen. Mgr. of the Travel division at Internet Brands. I just wanted to reach out to offer myself as a point of contact if you ever have questions about IB, or suggestions for our involvement with Wikivoyage. (WT-en) Redondo 16:48, 3 August 2007 (EDT)

Tokyo

[edit]

Hi Paul! I have seen that you are a native of Tokyo. I will visit Tokyo for my first time in April and would like to know if you have some tips for, especially nightlife would interest me. I stay in a hotel in Roppongi and read the Wikivoyage Shibuya and Roppongi articles. Are the recommendations for lounge/bar in these articles ok or would you suggest other spots? Thank you very much in advance an regards (WT-en) jan 08:20, 31 January 2011 (EST)
