How goes it? Thanks for the invite. I just noticed the St. Augustine page after I made mine. I ported all my info to that page, so if you want you can delete the one I made. Is there a way though to make it so if someone does type in St Augustine, St Auggie, or Saint Augustine, that the St. Augustine page pulls up? Thanks and have a nice day. Message from Noel Walley

[edit]

Hello Tom Holland,

Thank you for your welcome, but to what? I live in Llandudno, North Wales, UK, I am retired and nobody pays me for what I write and I am keen to promote all that is best in Llandudno. That is why I have my own website www.greatorme.org.uk and I also contribute to Wikipedia:Llandudno and throughout North Wales and elsewhere. When by accident I came across this Wikivoyage:Llandudno site, I wondered what it could possibly tell me that was extra? I soon found out that the stones for Stone Henge came from the Great Orme and so did iron! No one has ever linked either with Llandudno before - such news! Utter rubbish and such clumsy English throughout. I felt the needed to do something about it. All those unattributed entries are mine - what's the matter with your software? it keeps throwing me off with time outs? This does not happen on Wikipedia. What is it about all those turn-off headings? Understand? Buy? Sell? Get In? Get out? Give up? etc etc.

Please do me a favour and send me the link for whatsoever you consider the best Wikivoyage entry on your books and I will consider my position.

86.130.87.37 10:47, 19 March 2006 (EST) (or Noel Walley if that don't work)!

Hey Tom, any chance you could drop by the Hot springs article and put some flesh on the Arkansas bones? The expansion of terse place listings into a summary of what's really accessible would help the article, and you're probably better placed to do that one than anyone else. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 23:44, 22 March 2006 (EST)

When I get to Arkansas I will add to Hot Springs (Arkansas), I'll do adds to Hot springs then. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 10:26, 23 March 2006 (EST)

Glad to help, but the names will not be as you have shown them with the comma. They will be [[Blue {Arizona}]] and [[David (Kentucky}]]. I suggest you read Project:Article naming conventions and also read Project:How to start a new page, as well as Project:What is an article?. Thank you for your contibutions, you will pick up the style as you go along. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 13:32, 28 March 2006 (EST)

But I must tell you the graffiti and vandalism will be reverted and deleted. It is not a problem. The images you added early on I will mark for deletion. Don't take it personal. We just have to remove anything that does not meet the image policy. Hang in there, we want you to learn and contribute in a positive way. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 14:30, 28 March 2006 (EST)

Sure Tom i'am up for it! (WT-en) Traveler2006 14:32, 28 March 2006 (EST)

Disambiguation page template

[edit]

Just noticed that you've got your own template for disambiguation pages -- I put a note on Project:Disambiguation pages#Disambiguation page standard a while back about standardizing the template, and when no one objected put Project:Disambiguation pages#Format up as the recommended format. Like everything around here that could be changed, but if you're OK with it then let's standardize.

By the way, thanks for dealing with our friend Traveler2006 this morning. -- (WT-en) Ryan 19:27, 28 March 2006 (EST)

I fixed my template to be in line with the standard you developed. It was pretty close already. Thanks! -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 19:39, 28 March 2006 (EST)

Uh, Tom, unless I'm missing something, it's the norm to place the Project:Welcome message on newcomers' talk pages rather than on the main user page -- as you did, for example, on User:(WT-en) Haem85. That keeps the welcome around after the new user figures out how to fill the user page with personalized stuff. Am I missing something? It's great that you're helping welcome the newbies, anyway. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 21:49, 4 April 2006 (EDT)

In the interest of not confusing a new user I copied the message to the talk page and blanked the user page. I'm sure this was probably just a mistake on Tom's part as I've done the same thing on several occasions. -- (WT-en) Ryan 22:09, 4 April 2006 (EDT)

Need some advice. I just set up a disambiguation page for "Winslow" in view of the fact that there are places by this name in at least Arizona (which figures in some revisions I've been making) and Buckinghamshire. In the process I noted that your Ozarks (Arkansas) contribution includes a placeholder for a Winslow there too. However, I am unable to find any place called Winslow, Arkansas on the first atlas I checked, which really ought to have it. What's the deal? Destination (even if a little dinky one) or not? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 11:32, 15 April 2006 (EDT)

Hi Bill, Winslow (Arkansas) is located at the top of the Boston Mountains in Northwest Arkansas. You should be able to locate it on maps.google.com and I always like to check Wikipedia as they have a good list for disamb pages including Winslow, AR. Thanks Bill. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 12:06, 15 April 2006 (EDT)

Can you keep an eye out for links being added by (WT-en) Evg. It's probably a good time for me to go to sleep. Thanks. (WT-en) Sapphire 07:24, 21 April 2006 (EDT)

Thank you for improving Tulsa, which is where I live now.

I see you are in Oregon now, where I used to live.

If you have a chance, would you mind snapping a photo of the "Cheddar Master" (in Tillamook Oregon) from the road, so other travelers can find it easier? (Do they still give free tours?) --(WT-en) DavidCary 17:37, 25 May 2006 (EDT)

I will do my best. I am going to be here till mid-July. If I make it over to Tillamook I will get a picture for sure. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 17:44, 25 May 2006 (EDT)

Thanks and email

Thanks for the admin nomination, but I'd like to sleep on it. I've sent you an email regarding the nomination. - (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 14:09, 1 June 2006 (EDT)

Thanks Tom - my rollback mojo is obviously lacking today... although you could eat cheese and tootsie rolls in India ;-) -- (WT-en) Ryan 19:24, 1 June 2006 (EDT)

not sure that I would want to eat them at the same time. ;-) -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 19:29, 1 June 2006 (EDT)

Nice work with the welcomes! (WT-en) Maj 15:47, 29 July 2006 (EDT)

Just a note to say great shot of Crater Lake! I've visited a few times and never gotten anything memorable, but yours is exceptional! -- (WT-en) Ryan 19:24, 29 July 2006 (EDT)

Thanks! I made a couple of trips there since I have been in Oregon and have several other pictures. It is truely a beautiful place. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 19:36, 29 July 2006 (EDT)

Long Island - Maine

[edit]

Thanks for setting me straight about Frenchboro and Long Island. I have cleaned up my error and hopefully improved the article. As to Long Island (Maine), I think there is probably a consensus that the page stay now. You should now remove the VfD banner and remove the discussion from Project:Votes for deletion and add it to Talk:Long Island (Maine). This will avoid having the page deleted. -- (WT-en) Huttite 22:33, 29 July 2006 (EDT)

Sorry to barge in on your question. I think it may be unwise to redirect that page to the main page, because the spammers that were spamming Main Page/ were obviously using a spambot and if we redirect the page to the main page then the bot instead of coming to a dead end at Main Page/ would be sent to the Main Page and may dump its spam there. Personally, I'd rather have one orphaned page then have to revert a spambot every twenty minutes or so on the main page. -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 06:42, 20 August 2006 (EDT)

  • That is what I was afraid of and the reason for asking before plunging forward. Thanks for clarifing that. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 06:50, 20 August 2006 (EDT)
Yes, redirecting would be no use. The spambot will obviously be programmed to submit the form, which will override any redirects. (WT-en) Ravikiran 09:01, 20 August 2006 (EDT)

Thanks and sorry

Thanks for fixing my screwup with Z-kalinic's user/talk pages. Sorry to waste your time on it. (WT-en) OldPine 12:43, 27 August 2006 (EDT)

Kent

[edit]

Does that suffice? I believe I meant to put the disambiguator after Kent, but I got caught up in trying to hunt down attractions in Kent and Portage County and forgot about the need for the (disambiguation). -- (WT-en) Sapphire 21:41, 9 September 2006 (EDT)

Thanks for the welcome message

[edit]

Hi Tom, and thanks for your welcome to the site. It's nice to have a welcome from a real person and not just a computer-generated one! Much appreciated. -- (WT-en) Michael Pike 15:55, 16 September 2006 (GMT)

disamb unlinking

[edit]

I understand (I think) why you've done it, but the unlinking seems a bit counter-productive as I've spent time figuring out if each one needs to be disambiguated or not.

Also bear in mind that sometimes these links are to articles that have not yet been created but which are already linked to from other articles - eg Prince George's County on Marlow. ~ 203.144.143.6 09:43, 21 September 2006 (EDT)

Hi, we have pretty much determined by discussion that we are not going to disambig all 3000 plus counties and in the past we have discouraged doing that. See Project:Geographical hierarchy Section: "Do we really want counties as destinations?". I would encourage you to join that discussion. It seems to be consensus at this point that we don't encourage creation of counties as destinations. This is NOT policy. If a Wikivoyageer believes that a county is good destination and/or a good holder for cities when the base region is has too many listed, then we don't prevent creation of the article. That said, because you find a link to a county on some page or on a disambig page it doesn't mean we support linking to non-existent counties, it just means that someone has not removed it.
All this said, I have changed my original position on counties and do believe they are useful when regions have too many cities listed. I still don't think they make good travel destinations in most cases. They do in some and a good example is California.
So, when I un-link a county that has not been created, it is just my way of discouraging the creation of them. If a link is there, then the county is more likely to get created and that is not a good reason for creation.
I hope this explains and please continue with your valuable contributions. I do not want to discourage you from that. I would also encourage you to join in the discussion of this and create an account so that it would make it easy to communicate. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 10:27, 21 September 2006 (EDT)
Seems to me that the pages in question should be created as redirects. That way the disambiguation work is carried through, and anyone looking for info on that place is taken straight to whichever article actually covers it. The redirect markup could later be removed and the page could become a guide article as & when appropriate. ~ 203.144.143.7 10:48, 21 September 2006 (EDT)
That has been disucssed. Suggest you take your discussion to Project:Geographical hierarchy, as it will not be decided here. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 10:53, 21 September 2006 (EDT)
What I'm saying is I agree with the comments already on that page that favour creating redirects. Have you seen anything anywhere that suggests not to do this? Project:Geographical_hierarchy doesn't seem to cover the possibility either way. ~ 203.144.143.7 11:17, 21 September 2006 (EDT)
Please, discuss this on the talk page. As I have told you there is no policy, but the redirects you are talking about have been halted before. Please, take your comments and discussion to Project:Geographical hierarchy which is the talk page for Geographical hierarchy. If I have any comments I will respond there. Thanks. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 11:26, 21 September 2006 (EDT)

Hi Tom,

[edit]

I noticed your great contributions to Wikivoyage and also how you are such an avid traveler (you really get around!). I just wanted to invite you to a new free travel planning website located at TripTie.com. TripTie is very web 2.0 where people can edit any of the information, yet also very different from Wikivoyage, in the sense that TripTie serves as a trip planning website that allows users to customize and edit itineraries, item descriptions and upload photos. We are currently in beta right now, but you can email me at karl@triptie.com and I will be happy to send you an invitation into the beta, or feel free to go to the website and invite yourself. Please check us out, I would love to know what you think of our website.

Thanks so much,
Karl Sung

useless redirects to articles that don't exist

[edit]

For sure I've not created any redirects to articles that don't exist. If any of the others I've created were counterproductive or against policy or incorrectly edited in any way, please give me an example.

Thanks for the invite to create an account - I'll think about it. ~ 203.144.143.6 14:04, 23 September 2006 (EDT)

Thanks for the examples. Both redirects were created to prevent them accidentally being created as articles in the future, as opposed to redirects. The disambiguation was because there were already links set up to Redonda (Antigua) and to Redonda Island (Canada). ~ 203.144.143.6 15:15, 23 September 2006 (EDT)
