[edit]Today is the 99th anniversary of the founding of the United States National Park Service, and to celebrate there will be no entrance fees charged at any park! Entrance fees will also be waived on two more days this year: September 26 (National Public Lands Day), and November 11 (Veterans Day). Wikivoyage has extensive guides to most of the areas managed by the park service.

The South Pole will see its only sunrise of 2015 on September 21, and the sun won't set over the pole again until March 22, 2016. In addition to enjoying the 24-hour daylight, travelers to the pole can visit the American research station's tent-sized visitor center or show off their skills at the base's frisbee golf course. Tour operators can arrange flights or overland expeditions, but be prepared to spend $30,000 to $60,000 for the trip!

The South Pole is a destination that will attract some interest, and the only sunrise of the year seems like as good of an excuse as any to highlight it.

This would be the second NPS mention within about a month, but it's a big enough anniversary for one of our star articles that it's probably worthwhile. Tagging the Yosemite National Park Facebook account should gain additional exposure.

Stonehenge is a UNESCO world Heritage site in England that dates back to 3000BC, and while its purpose is still shrouded in mystery, elements of the monument perfectly align with the sunset on the winter solstice (December 22). During the solstice entry to Stonehenge is free, and visitors are sometimes allowed to walk among the stones with neo pagans and druids who gather to venerate nature.
