Wikivoyage:Social media/Nominations

From Wikivoyage

This page is for suggesting future social media posts to be broadcast on the English Wikivoyage Facebook page and/or Twitter account.

Past nominations are archived at Wikivoyage:Social media/Nominations/Archives.

Criteria

[edit]
  • Keep it short and snappy; Twitter has a character limit and Facebook posts are generally no longer than a couple of sentences.
  • Posts should be informative and entertaining, with subjects related to topics covered on Wikivoyage or about the wider Wikimedia movement.
  • Social media posts should ideally help to broaden the Wikivoyage community by encouraging people to read and edit content here and on other Wikimedia sites.
  • Articles linked in social media posts don't need to be perfect, but preference should be given to those with a status of "usable" or higher.
  • Articles linked in social media posts must include information relevant to the posting (e.g., don't create a post about a festival that is never mentioned in the article).
  • Relevant images are optional but welcome.

Format

[edit]

Nominations should have the following format:

{{socialNom
| blurb=The content that will appear on the social media posting. If the posting is meant for Twitter be sure to adhere to the character limit.
| image=An optional image that should accompany the posting.
| link=A link that should accompany the posting, usually to a Wikivoyage or Wikimedia article.
| date=An optional field that can be used to specify a specific date or date range for the posting.
| other=An optional field that can be used to explain why the nomination is being made, why the date range is being suggested, or anything else that the nominator feels might be important.
| nominator=The signature (~~~~) of the person making the nomination
}}

COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) has led to widespread travel disruptions and safety concerns. Consider postponing travel to affected areas to avoid being infected or quarantined. If you do travel, take precautions as you would for other infections: wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face, cough and sneeze into a tissue and then wash your hands or into your elbow, and avoid contact with sick people. Before traveling, read up on the extensive and fast-changing array of travel restrictions that have been imposed around the world. After travel, monitor your health and consider self-quarantining for two weeks to avoid transmitting the disease to others.

Suggested date: As soon as we're ready. Continue to the monitor that the article is up-to-date.

IMO social media is the ideal platform to post topical information. An increasing number of countries are being infected and it is prudent advice to tell all travellers to reconsider non-essential travel in the short-term, especially to the hotspots.

  • Hell yes to this nomination! Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:00, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes to the nomination, but we should simplify the text. I think by now most of the world knows about coronavirus; we don't need to start with 2 encyclopedic sentences explaining what it is. Remove those sentences, and lead with our focus: "Coronavirus has led to widespread travel disruptions" or something like that. --Bigpeteb (talk) 17:10, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes. To address Bigpeteb's concern, I've plunged forward to remove the encyclopedic introduction. I've also modified the rest of the text to match the article's current lead. —Granger (talk · contribs) 06:29, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
