Texas's southern region is, for the most part, a forbidding desert area. A borderland with nearby Mexico, it acts as a gateway for those coming North and those going South. It's also very warm, even in the winter, so many people come from the north to warm up here.

  • The Alamo - Originally built as a Spanish mission, and later transformed into a makeshift fort which became an important battlesite during the Texas-Mexican war, this downtown San Antonio locale is Texas' top tourist attraction.
  • Choke Canyon State Park
  • The Rio Grande River Valley, including Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park near Mission, is scenic and provides an excellent place for birdwatching, with over 500 species.
  • Spanish missions - This region has some of the country's best-preserved examples of Spanish mission architecture. The missions in San Antonio and Goliad are particularly impressive.

If there are Cities and Other destinations listed, they may not all be at usable status or there may not be a valid regional structure and a "Get in" section describing all of the typical ways to get here.
