Too many regions?

Manitoba is divided into 8 regions, but many of them have few developed articles:

• Interlake links to 2 articles
• Pembina Valley -- 3
• Central_Plains_(Manitoba) -- 2
• Parkland -- 2
• Western Manitoba -- 3

The other regions are better developed:

• Eastern Manitoba -- 8
• North of 53 -- 9
• Winnipeg -- an undivided city article with guide status

Saskatchewan, by comparison, which has a similar population and size, has 3 regions.

I propose to combine

• Interlake, Pembina Valley and Central Plains into Central Manitoba region (7 articles), and
• Parkland and Western Manitoba into Prairie Mountain region (5 articles).

This would reduce the number of regions from 8 to 5, and provide readers easier navigation through our articles.

Wikivoyage:Geographical_hierarchy#Regions says:

"Our hierarchies work best with a moderate number of items at each level; a good target is around seven items, plus or minus two. With fewer than five items, the subdivision starts to appear inefficient and excessive...."

This proposal brings Manitoba's regions in line with this guidance.

Overall, this sounds like a good idea, but I do have two questions. First, do you know Manitoba well? Second, is my observation correct that Winnipeg does not currently have a region article?

If you don't know Manitoba well, that's not a major issue. I was just wondering because at least one of the regions you propose merging into "Central Manitoba" does not seem very central.

I do not know Manitoba well, but I do not believe we have any Manitobans amounts our regular contributors. I would to love input from anyone who does have direct knowledge.

Yes, Winnipeg is a stand-alone article, which I think makes sense since has half the pronvince's population.

I think calling the area immediately surrounding the capital/largest city "central" makes sense, too: the centre of population in the province is really quite close to the American border, so there isn't really a "south". Ground Zero (talk) 16:33, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

All of that sounds reasonable, though I'd like to see Winnipeg in the region article where the city exists, since we don't want to confuse our readers but not including the city where it would be expected to be found. @Ground Zero:, I think the proposal is broadly OK. My only concern is merging Interlake with the rest of Central Manitoba. I'm not very familiar with Manitoba, but after Winnipeg and Churchill, the next thing I know is the Interlake region. Quickly looking around at government ministries and organization names, it seems pretty common to have Interlake separate from Central Manitoba. And taking a glance at the tourism guide to Interlake, I think at least five guides could be created to cover the beaches and attractions there. I looked at a bunch of regional maps, and that seemed to be the best fit of the names out there. But I'm not an expert on things Manitoba, so i am not attached to the name. Ground Zero (talk) 19:31, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
