Edits needed prior to Destination of the Month nomination
[edit]This article looks great to me! The only additional thing I think is clearly needed is several more thumbnails of photos. I think there's room for 3-4 well chosen photos, distributed throughout the article.
Is there anything else anyone sees as needing work? For example, do any of the listings need updating? Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:09, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Banner alts
[edit]Here are two alts for the article. Big thanks to all the contributors and most recently @Grahamsands for pulling it all together! There were no free images of the gallows sign, so here's what I found. The George is the best of the 3 imho, it's got some contrast to it at least. The gatehouse is an odd crop, and a bit stark at that time of year. Either are better than the current, wicked washed out with too much atmospheric perspective. - I think my favourites in order are 1 (inner courtyard), 2 (the gatehouse) and then 0 (current). SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:06, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
- Same preference here. Grahamsands (talk) 16:41, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- Done, thanks! ButteBag (talk) 00:51, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

Minor other things
[edit]For me the map is too big, I'd set it to default size. I'm not familiar with the "Ram Jam Inn" story and it didn't really make sense to me. Plus the building was knocked down so I couldn't go see it if I wanted to. I'd probably cut this. I'd like to read a little more about what the events are. Are they cool? I usually put the tourist info ctr under a "Visitor Info" subhead under "understand". I had to copy paste "Arts Centre" to find it and probably noone else will do that lol. A few geo things are missing but that doesn't bother me too much. Page looks great in general, thanks again for all the hard work! ButteBag (talk) 00:58, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
- The map is that size because zoom=16 in a bijou little town with POIs crowded together. I seldom go above zoom=14; at that scale the map size would be standard but the POIs would form a megablob like a high school model of a vitamin molecule, and I'd be advocating fewer markers not more.
- The TIC is the Arts Centre so we only want one marker. I chose to mark the Art Centre as Do, but if you think it would be helpful, the TIC could be marked instead. Grahamsands (talk) 18:54, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah absolutely! Sometimes I almost wish only the more important POIs were worthy of markers. Once you hit a critical number, you may as well have none as the human brain can't meaningfully process the info. Maybe the map tech will improve in the future. Anyway, thanks again! - Further: I removed the infobox because that story looks unreliable. There were highwaymen along the Great North Road, but Turpin's area was Essex. He fled north in 1737 when the rest of his gang were captured, but it was sheep- and horse-theft he then practised in Yorks and Lincs, for which he was hanged. - The proliferation of markers is a point we may wish to take to the pub if there's other support, but I've felt like an eccentric dissident on this. In a busy landscape they're counter-productive, but there is this train-spotter ethos of writing down numbers of scant relevance to ttcf or taking any real journey. I use the "Dom" principle, that there is a hierarchy of markers. If I tell you Paulo's Pizza is next to the Duomo, bet you can find it. If the other way round, you may struggle, and if you map-mark all the dozen places in Piazza Duomo nobody will ever find a dom thing. However the recent mess over marking tram stops implicitly acknowledged this principle, so perhaps we'll get a hearing. Grahamsands (talk) 09:03, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
- Ha, yeah maybe there could be a "display this marker at this zoom level and below" param added to the marker template. That combined with some kind of clustering algorithm would help out a lot. I bet it's a ton of work, however; and probably no one would use it if implemented, so I'm not holding my breath. Anyway, it's why I leave the maps at default size and let the user zoom in if they care. Who knows what someone wants to look at or why. ButteBag (talk) 03:14, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
