Hi from Alain Désilets, whom you met at WikiSym 06[edit]

Hi Evan,

Well, I finally managed to read through 4 weeks email backlog, and have time to follow up on some conversation I started at WikiSym 06.

I would like to continue our discussion of multilingual support for WikiTravel. Maybe I could come to Montreal some time soon to visit? I am thinking of attending one of Sébastien Paquet's Wiki Wednesdays, to meet the Montreal wiki community. Maybe I could combine that with a WikiTravel visit?

Best regards,

BTW: I sent an email to Michele with the same content. I couldn't cc you cause I don't have your email address.

Arriving in Los Angeles[edit]

To first order, the NM-LA via I-40 route follows exactly along the Route 66 itinerary, which has been developed beautifully by User:(WT-en) Rt66lt and collaborators (of whom, I modestly assert, I am one). Suggest you take a peek at that itinerary and see if it's something to add stuff in, or also, to alert your correspondent to. The info flow doesn't need to be one-way... -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:36, 6 August 2006 (EDT)

Maps[edit]

What was the url for the in browser map editing program the Polish guy spoke about on Sunday? -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 23:16, 7 August 2006 (EDT)

Special pages in the French Wikivoyage[edit]

Hi Evan, it seems we have a problem on French Wikivoyage: a wikivoyager using Internet Explorer reported me that the page Pages Spéciales was blank when seen with that browser... So I did test it and the page is actually blank with IE, but everything is OK with Firefox or Opera. It seems that this page is the only one to face that king of trouble. Could you please help me to solve the problem? Thanks a lot. Regards, (WT-en) Julien 09:01, 8 August 2006 (EDT)

Yes, it's listed on Project:Bug reports. I've got no idea why it's happening, but I'll see what I can do to fix it. --(WT-en) Evan 18:14, 8 August 2006 (EDT)
The problem is now fixed. Thanks Evan. (WT-en) Julien 12:35, 14 August 2006 (EDT)

New candidate of ja: administrator[edit]

Hi Evan, this is (WT-ja) Shoestring from ja: edition. We would like to inform you that we recommended (WT-ja) Episteme as a new candidate of ja: administrator as follows.--(WT-en) Shoestring 02:39, 14 August 2006 (EDT)

CandleWithHare's Shared password[edit]

User:(WT-en) CandleWithHare can't use Shared, because he's forgotten his password on Shared. Unfortunately, he can't have his password sent to him, because of some error. I tried to have my password sent to me too, but I got the same error. Anyway, you could recover his password and tell him what it is? -- (WT-en) Sapphire 14:38, 15 August 2006 (EDT)

Stats[edit]

Evan, I want to make a pitch to the Greater Cincinnati Convention and Visitors Bureau and a few state organizations to work with Wikivoyage by relicensing images, maps, and texts. I'll need a few things from you before I can take my pitch on the road. Can I have the monthly hit stats for Santa Fe in July, Budapest in August, and Cincinnati in September? I'd also appreciate access to the stats for Isle Royale from Mid-June to Mid-July, and Denali National Park from Mid-July to mid-August. If the stats for Previously of the Beaten Path are impossible then I'd be very appreciative for the stats for the past Destinations of the Month. -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 00:38, 16 August 2006 (EDT)

A few edits[edit]

I made a few edits to your Alexandria proposal for the site of the 2007 Wikimania. Also, I don't know if any of the info I provided on the talk page could be of any use, but you may want to check that out. -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 20:55, 16 August 2006 (EDT)

Bot for link unpacking?[edit]

I was unpacking links on St. Louis today. I think a lot of the early articles may have been written by WikiPedia folks who were used to doing it that way, or maybe the MoS just changed, or some folks just like the look.. whatever. It's tough work because of all the precise cutting and pasting. It occured to me that bots don't suffer from that same overmousing pain below the shoulderblade. Maybe one could be designed to scout the see, do, sleep sections and automagically unpack links?? Most times the link would be in the wrong sport in a listing (before the address IF GIVEN (sorry)), but it would be an improvement over the front-end link and also easier for a human editor to move. (WT-en) OldPine 09:36, 18 August 2006 (EDT)

I might misunderstand the idea of "unpacking links". In my mind, it means that if a listing just has an external link, you go find the actual data at that link -- hours of operation, address, price range, etc. I think what you're talking about is taking front-linked listing and making them into the auto-numbered listing we all know and love. Is that about right? --(WT-en) Evan 09:41, 18 August 2006 (EDT)
Yes, I'm talking bout the latter. Ah.. I see we call them front-linked. Gosh, if you've got the former you don't need me :) Sorry if I used the wrong terminology. (WT-en) OldPine 09:59, 18 August 2006 (EDT)

Administrator Wikivoyage[edit]

Hello Evan, I'm Nanow_Jesús_Madrid from Wikivoyage(es). I've just read your proposal and I feel very proud of that. If you nomine me for administrator I'll accept it. Thank you very much for your confidence in me. (WT-en) Nanow jesús madrid 09:53, 18 August 2006 (EDT)

Administrator Wikivoyage/de[edit]

Hi Evan,

did you read de:Project:Nominierungen zum Administrator? I've nominated Sapphire two weeks ago. It would be great if you agree. -- (WT-en) Steffen M. 05:53, 20 August 2006 (EDT)

Yes, I saw it. As far as I can tell his candidacy succeeded without me. I have to admit that I thought the de: nomination period was the same as on en:, but it looks like it's 7 days, not 14. So, I'll switch his sysop flag on. --(WT-en) Evan 10:36, 20 August 2006 (EDT)

Listing tags[edit]

It seems that the listing-foo-attr variables do not work unless they are in English, however the listing-foo-tag variable works in either German or English is there a work around for that? You can see de:Benutzer:(WT-de) Sapphire/Sandbox#Test to see what I'm talking about. I've restore listing-address-attr to its original form, however, if you look at directions or "richtungen" it falls apart. -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 12:06, 20 August 2006 (EDT)

I'll take a look. In the meantime, could you report this as a bug on shared:? --(WT-en) Evan 15:59, 20 August 2006 (EDT)

Thanks ..[edit]

.. for your endorsement, and especially for the kind words! I really appreciate it. I don't think I stand much of a chance, but I'll be damned if I don't try. ;-) --(WT-en) Eloquence 22:53, 20 August 2006 (EDT)

LanguageFi.php[edit]

Could you upload the latest Project:LanguageFi.php from the current Mediawiki install? (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:32, 21 August 2006 (EDT)

It's not working very well. I'll try and massage it a little more. The other option is just to edit the MediaWiki: interface with a launched wiki. --(WT-en) Evan 22:32, 21 August 2006 (EDT)

Episteme[edit]

Hi Evan, This is Shoestring from ja:. It has past two weeks since we recommended Episteme as the candidate of the Administrator, and so far there’s no objection about his inauguration.-(WT-en) Shoestring 10:49, 29 August 2006 (EDT)

Southeast asia[edit]

So where have you been in Southeast Asia. Im gunna be in Thailand and VIetnam for 5-6 weeks in dec-Jan. JUst wondering where you went in the Southeast. (WT-en) Hothgond 13:23, 29 August 2006 (EDT)

Reminder[edit]

Hi Evan - I'm heading out of town for a couple of days, but just wanted to leave a reminder that tomorrow it will have been two weeks since Tsandell was nominated for admin, and there have been no objections, so whatever magic voodoo it is you do to make buttons appear will need to be done. -- (WT-en) Ryan 08:57, 30 August 2006 (EDT)

Damn apostrophe[edit]

Noticed that you think an apostrophe is causing some problems on the main page. On DE we've been having problems submitting text because the apostrophe is an illegal character according to the spam filter. If you would have a look at this wts:WtTech:DE doesn't allow me to submit text after your battle with the main page is over I'd appreciate it. -- User:(WT-en) Sapphire

No, it wasn't the apostrophe; it was the unclosed "small" tag. I'll take a look at your error, but I think it's a problem with the spam filter's output, not that it's trying to filter the apostrophe char. --(WT-en) Evan 16:15, 2 September 2006 (EDT)

Wikivoyage/es[edit]

Hello Evan, I don't want to disturb you but I think we need a new administrator in Wikivoyage/es. I would like to be an administrator but although I know hot to create a page like Project:Administrator nominations in spanish, I don't know how or who have to provide the tools of an administrator. Please contact wih me in my spanish user page. Thank a lot. (WT-en) Nanow jesús madrid 07:38, 4 September 2006 (EDT)

Email password not working[edit]

Hi Mr. Bad (if that is your real name). I just created an account as User:(WT-en) Mike Dillon and promptly lost my randomly created password in a fiery browser crash. When I tried to email myself a password, I got an error message. I'm only contacting you because I don't know what the equivalent of "Village Pump (technical)" is for WikiTravel and I remember you from the Crackmonkey list back in the day. Thanks in advance! 66.159.240.178 18:43, 4 September 2006 (EDT)

False alarm. I received the password reminder messages, despite the scary error message. The error message seems to have been related to logging and didn't affect the actual sending of the reminder. (WT-en) Mike Dillon 19:28, 4 September 2006 (EDT)

Admin nomination[edit]

Hi there. I wanted to let you know that I nominated myself for admin status on the Portuguese site. The other admin there, RMX, has given his support, but I think he is currently the only admin, so that whole two admin rule, you know? There may not be anyone else to give support, as he and I are on there 100 times more than anyone else... Also, I don't know if it is allowed to be admin in more than one version, but I'd really like to be an admin on the Spanish version as well- most of my work has been between the Spanish and Portuguese versions, and I've done almost as much of the regional organization of the Spanish site as I have on the Portuguese one, plus translated many templates including the quickbox and all the current city/region templates. I've inserted scores of IsIn tags and I've been doing a lot of revision work to make the city/region templates standardized across all pages. Please let me know what you think. (WT-en) Texugo 21:41, 4 September 2006 (EDT)

I gave you my support. I think it makes sense to be admin on more than one language version -- I actually think it's a great way to integrate the cultures of the different wikis. Let's let NJM's nomination pass on es:, then I'll nominate you there, too. --(WT-en) Evan 03:18, 5 September 2006 (EDT)
Great! Thanks a lot! (WT-en) Texugo 03:25, 5 September 2006 (EDT)

SVG[edit]

What do you think about add to Wikivoyage SVG files? Because in commons is a lot of this (flags, maps...). In commons system mediawiki scaling and change this files to PNG. (WT-en) Adam Dziura 03:51, 5 September 2006 (EDT)

I'm not sure what you mean. You can upload SVG and zipped SVG files now. The automatic display of SVG files as PNGs has been turned on and off several times now -- I think the general feeling was that for maps and such the svg-to-png converter did a terrible job converting between formats; worse than none at all. If you think it should be turned on, maybe you could post that on wts:Project:Tech requests? It's pretty easy for me to turn on and off, but it's up to the community to decide. --(WT-en) Evan 09:04, 6 September 2006 (EDT)

[edit]

Do you know if the Wikivoyage logo is available in larger format or as vector graphics, suitable for print? And what are the rules for its use? I'm organizing two "mapping weekends" in October for OpenStreetMap and we're also going to take photos for Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. --(WT-en) LA2 13:37, 6 September 2006 (EDT)

The logo is available at Image:Treatment.svg. It's available under the Creative Commons by-sa 1.0 license, which means you'll need to note the license and give credit to the creator (User:(WT-en) Mark). --(WT-en) Evan 16:12, 6 September 2006 (EDT)
Oooooh.. this OpenStreetMap thing is exciting in view of how many maps we need here. Are we giving this project some publicity elsewhere here at Wikivoyage? (WT-en) OldPine 17:00, 6 September 2006 (EDT)

Single sign on[edit]

Would you want me to translate the the instructions of the single sign on for DE? (Apparently, my German is getting better). It might be cool to get that started on DE. -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 16:40, 6 September 2006 (EDT)

Meetup[edit]

Hey, I'm going to be in Montreal Sep. 15-18. We should get together if you guys are around. --(WT-en) Dawnview 12:41, 7 September 2006 (EDT)

HI![edit]

Hi! I'm new here and I want to be an administrator eventually. So, how do I get started on the fast track to sucess?(WT-en) Jashkion M.P. 16:46, 8 September 2006 (EDT)

I have no idea! I made myself an admin when we started the site in an egregious abuse of power (see Project:Administrator nominations/Archives#User:Evan). But that was a one-time thing; I don't know if it will work for you. I guess the best thing you can do to become an admin is do all the non-administrator tasks that need doing. Learn about our goals and non-goals, read our policies and guidelines, and get a feel for the manual of style. Welcome new users, clean up articles, participate in discussions, and make yourself a presence on Special:Recentchanges. Eventually you'll get nominated. --(WT-en) Evan 16:58, 8 September 2006 (EDT)

Thanks! I like this website and I know some people who are vandals who I want to block off. Can you help me there?(WT-en) Jashkion M.P. 17:01, 8 September 2006 (EDT)

Oh, that's great. We have a page on how to handle unwanted edits, that might be a good place to start. --(WT-en) Evan 17:04, 8 September 2006 (EDT)

Oh, You see what happened was 4 girls came on here who went to my school and started dissing each other and saying they are the hottest and they are strippers. There page got deleted, but as 68.96.23.7, I requested a block. I want them blocked before they strike again. I don;t wanna here about strippers and erotic costumes. Here were their names: Adi Gill, Taylor Bies, Sydney Goodnight, and Kylie Adolf. Please block them for me!(WT-en) Jashkion M.P. 17:10, 8 September 2006 (EDT)

Ohhhh! Well, in that case, you don't have to become an administrator at all! All you have to do is put a nomination on Project:User ban nominations. --(WT-en) Evan 17:17, 8 September 2006 (EDT)

We got a problem! Adi Gill has come to threaten me! Help Even HELP! Block her off now! She made a death threat to me! (WT-en) Jashkion M.P. 17:22, 8 September 2006 (EDT)

Oh my! That's really serious. I don't think blocking users is going to help that one bit! Shouldn't you call a teacher or the police? --(WT-en) Evan 17:33, 8 September 2006 (EDT)

I got it under control don't worry. Just block them,alright! (WT-en) Jashkion M.P. 17:37, 8 September 2006 (EDT)

What needs to be done[edit]

Could you look this over and tell me what this guy needs to still do (if anything) to be compliant with the CC-by-SA 1.0 license? Thanks. -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 15:39, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

Welcome to your new administrator.[edit]

I'm an administrator on Wikipedia so, How do I make the transition between sites?P.S. check out my'pedia page! (WT-en) Drini 17:11, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

We have a page for Wikipedians learning about Wikivoyage; see Project:Welcome, Wikipedians. You may also be interested in our Spanish Wikivoyage version, see es:Portada.
I think the best way to make the transition is to plunge forward and edit some pages. Check out our policies and guidelines, and manual of style to understand how things work around here. --(WT-en) Evan 17:22, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

Do you have a page on Wikipedia? Are you a user? PLease leave me a message on my Wikipedia talk page alright? (WT-en) Drini 17:14, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

Yes, yes, and sure, but I prefer to talk about Wikivoyage on Wikivoyage, not on some other site. --(WT-en) Evan 17:22, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

I understand, but still, please leave me a message om my Wikipedia page AND Wikivoyage page to compromise. (WT-en) Drini 17:28, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

For some reason it doesn't show on my Wikipedia page! Please kindly write it again so it'll show! (WT-en) Drini 17:48, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

That's an impostor account. See [1] for evidence. I just replied to your comment with my account there. User:(WT-en) Drini is an impersonator of me. (WT-en) Dr-ini 18:40, 11 September 2006 (EDT)
I'm also Drini at Spanish Wikipedia, commons wikipedia and meta wikipedia, from where you can read this proving also the account was an impostor (WT-en) Dr-ini 18:41, 11 September 2006 (EDT)
Finally, that IP 68.96.23.7 has been identified a zombie or open proxy computer from where the death threats to me have been made. See [2] for more evidence, and by which I suggest to indef block the ip and the username. (WT-en) Dr-ini 18:43, 11 September 2006 (EDT)
Sigh. Well, thanks for dropping in. We're not big on blocks and bans here -- never had much of a need. But we'll keep an eye on the IP. --(WT-en) Evan 19:38, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

Cache and Times[edit]

Is there a way to clear the cache for multiple country articles? I deleted a whole slew of flags that had been moved to Shared, but most of the articles haven't started displaying the Shared flag. There's simply a link to the Shared flag. See Ukraine for an example.

I just cleared the cache. I should probably make a special page to do that, but until then, you can try editing a file in the MediaWiki: namespace. I think the cache is cleared even if there's no change. --(WT-en) Evan 17:35, 13 September 2006 (EDT)

Also, I'm not very hell-bent on spelling out the days of the weeks, however, I am a strong believer in 24 hour format and I think converting to that format should be a route to explore. I originally hated the 24 hour format, but I changed my opinion of the format about two months ago. I'm very tempted to say that it would be worth the hassle. It's not as a daunting task as changing 10,000 articles since many (like Ajax) don't even have times or dates in the article. Also, it took us roughly four months to get rid of the "External Links" section. While I'm sure MoSing time formats will take a little longer than four months. I don't believe converting from AM/PM to 24 hours will distract too much from the and constructively contributing to Wikivoyage, since I think most people will MoS the format as they just happen to notice the difference in formats on an article. -- (WT-en) Sapphire 16:53, 13 September 2006 (EDT)

I just want to make sure that people are a) thinking in terms of what's best for the project and for the traveler, not just of their own personal preferences, b) accepting that making MoS changes means changing a lot of articles, and c) not changing itsy-bitsy things on the MoS so often that its value as a reference becomes meaningless. --(WT-en) Evan 17:35, 13 September 2006 (EDT)

CC salon in Montreal, oct. 4th[edit]

Hi Evan--Tina and I were wondering if Michele and yourself would be willing to give a short presentation on wikivoyage (5 to 10mn) to start the next CC Salon in Montreal on Wednesday, oct 4th? The event will be held at L'amère à boire at 2049 St. Denis, starting at 6:30. cheers, Sabine

Sabine, that sounds superb! We'll definitely be there! --(WT-en) Evan 12:30, 18 September 2006 (EDT)

OpenID DE[edit]

So I tinkered with the MediaWiki template and added the OpenID option. I believe my translation is accurate, however, I may have messed up the last word. I think what I have is close if not the cigar. -- (WT-en) Sapphire 13:17, 18 September 2006 (EDT)

Back in a flash[edit]

It was good to see you guys this weekend (and that was a damn fine restaurant). Before I come back, you'll have to figure out where the good Dim Sum places are. You know, taking a walk down Mt. Royal was a bad idea, I spent all my money there. :) --(WT-en) Dawnview 01:36, 19 September 2006 (EDT)

Haha! Well, it was good to see you -- and I'll figure out some dim sum options for the next time you're in town. --(WT-en) Evan 08:20, 19 September 2006 (EDT)

ES admin[edit]

Hi there. Did you still want to nominate me for admin on the Spanish site, or shall I do it myself? You asked me to remind you, so... (WT-en) Texugo 23:53, 20 September 2006 (EDT)

Feel like giving me your support there? I'd really appreciate it. (WT-en) Texugo 11:22, 26 September 2006 (EDT)

Review[edit]

Would you please revert the switch on Review from EN to Shared. I downloaded the first non-beta version of IE 7 and I want to see what the TOC issues look like in the new IE 7. -- (WT-en) Sapphire 01:57, 22 September 2006 (EDT)

OK, sounds good. I'm not going to do it today, but I can do it sometime early next week. --(WT-en) Evan 09:43, 22 September 2006 (EDT)

Recreational reading[edit]

Hi Evan, I thought I'd pass on a couple of links to articles we talked about last weekend.

The first is the article on how newspapers think of everything as a 'story', so things get shoe-horned in to that format, including births & deaths, photos of the week etc. The second article is one that suggests a colorizing scheme for trust in wiki edits. I know this isn't really a problem for Wikivoyage, nor am I confident it's a good solution, but it's an interesting read.

Blinky[edit]

Yes on IE, no on Firefox. Lemme investigate further and give you a full report. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 12:07, 28 September 2006 (EDT)

OK. Maybe shift+reload the page to make sure that the username.js file is cleared from cache so you get the new version. --(WT-en) Evan 12:58, 28 September 2006 (EDT)
Clearing private data fixed the problem. I can see the blinky now. Thanks! — (WT-en) Ravikiran 03:56, 29 September 2006 (EDT)
