I am interested in contributing to WikiTravel.org. I already operate a credible tourism website for Western Australia and am seeking further exposure (Quid Pro Quo). I can't afford to spend time researching, writing and contributing if I cannot obtain anything in return such as a few links. Either you are running a business and so work with other business operators in a credible and effective manner, or you are running some sort of charity similar to Wikipedia and relying on donations. Obviously, you don't want to have the kind of links that would detract from your website, but links to well developed, valuable and informative websites could help to enhance your site. I don't want to put my website link here, but if you go to Google and search for Holiday WA we will most likely be listed at the top of the resulting page. See what you think, is this a type of site that you might possibly permit as an external link? Regards David

I like a lot the wikivoyage project, but i thing a very important feature is missing: It is not allowed to add external link to find good address where to sleep! 80% of the people planing to travel will first be interresting by a guide to know good place where to sleep (and also to eat). I thing you must stop to forbid external link to resource showing good place where to sleep! Also, i thing that the most important contributor to the wikivoyage guide will be the people who have some hotel/restaurant/etc because they are very interresting by the wikivoyage project and also they know perfectly the area where they are ! if you stop to forbid them to add link to their resource, for sur they will become to be a good contributor to the wikivoyage project !

For exemple if you go on the frejus city you will see: "Sleep: You can rent an apartment in Fréjus. It is cheaper than a 2, 3 or 4 * hotel, larger, more comfortable, practical, and... it feels like a real French experience!" Everyone read that are more interresting to know where they can rent these appartments ! don't you thing that it's the purpose of a travel guide ?

The purpose of a travel guide is to have addresses, phone numbers, price and other information about hotels in the travel guide -- not at the other end of an URL. We do allow hotel owners (or anybody) to add the link to their hotel in the appropriate accommodation listings. Sorry it took a while, but I've added a quick comment on the WikiOutdoors discussion. It looks like a neat idea, and hopefully the site takes off. book links and bolded titles

Hey Evan, a quick question - is there a standard for bolded or unbolded titles when doing a list of, say, cities or regions? I've been doing some bolded recently (see 'get out' in Cox's Bazar) but figure I should ask before causing more work to undo later...

Also I've seen somewhere but can't find an example now, book listings, maybe a section called 'recommended reading'... is this ok, and I recall links to ISBN numbers and such... what's the policy? (WT-en) Cacahuate 08:08, 7 December 2006 (EST)

I believe it's just unbolded in the Project:article templates, and I kind of prefer it that way. A link at the beginning of a line is going to attract attention anyways, so boldface is kind of overkill. I do like using boldface in the text of the one-liner descriptions, since they give some idea of what's going on in that city.

As for books, I think they're supposed to go under "Understand". I don't like the word "recommended", since someone needs to be doing the recommending. I think in some parts of the site, there's a "Read" subsection of the Understand section.

Bus aggregator

It's a sticky situation, but I think chartering buses for a large group are outside our goals. Regardless, we only make external links to primary sources, so links to the bus charter aggregator you were adding would be off the table anyways. Bug question

Any chance you might know why if you click "Edit" on one of the headers on Travel news it edits a different section? I.e. If you click "edit" for the "December" header you edit the "November" header. Template:Newsitem used <h3> tags, which caused the edit links to be thrown off. I've changed those to <div> tags, which seems to have fixed the issue. Actually, I think the feature I was talking about was localization of the names of listing tags. So on French Wikivoyage the drink tag may be called boire, and the address attribute might be adresse. You're talking to the wrong guy. (WT-en) Jpatokal was the one who objected so strongly to localizing. The code is there, and the instructions are on en:Project:Listings. Cities and towns

I believe the distinction User:(WT-en) Paul. was trying to make was that Anglicism whereby the word "city" denotes not the size of a settelment, but its legal status -- a city is a town with a royal charter. Hence Wells is a city even though it has only 10K citizens. Our use of the header "Cities" often seems to hurt the brains of our English contributors. -- (WT-en) Colin 20:05, 14 December 2006 (EST)

North Americans use "city" for things that aren't really big ol' cities ("city hall", "city limits", "you have to get a permit from the city"). Ah, I was just about to respond here but I see I've been beaten to the punch. Colin pretty much covered it, but I do think it's useful to distinguish between the three in the case of the UK at least as there is a clear dividing line between cities, towns and villages. It's not a matter of controversy as cities, towns and villages all have different status and are clearly defined. That being said I agree that the "Cities, towns and villages" header is clumsy, but I just wanted to see if you'd be amenable to keeping the "cities" header but allowing for sub-headers, at least in the case of the UK. If you want to keep the discussion on Project:Region article template#Cities then I can move this over, but figured it worth posting here first to see if you had strenuous objections. --(WT-en) Paul. 17:40, 17 December 2006 (EST)

• Alexa is a little toolbar that people put in their browsers to get information about the sites they're looking at. As a side-benefit (sort of), alexa.com keeps track of all the sites people go to, and ranks sites by popularity. It's become the default way to measure relative popularity of a site for people who can't afford fancy reports like Comscore. You can see Wikivoyage's stats at http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?q=&url=wikivoyage.org/ . You can have fun comparing us to fodors.com, frommers.com, concierge.com, timeout.com, roughguides.com, letsgo.com, or lonelyplanet.com. I mentioned that Wikivoyage is currently the #2 travel guide after LP; for other travel resources, tripadvisor.com, virtualtourist.com and travelzoo.com continue to beat us out. However, I don't consider them true "travel guides" in the same way LP or Rough Guides are.

Wiki for paper publications

I am enjoying making contributions to wikivoyage. I have a file of climate information my colleagues and I have been working on for a couple of years now. I would like to contribute it over the next few months. I am inerested in starting a wiki myself: one so that writers of critical essays and articles on theatre and interdisciplinary arts can contibute and share their work. Is it ieasy to set up a wiki? Where does one go for software information and server requirements?

So, lemme see if I can answer these in order. First, I am enjoying your contributions to Wikivoyage -- they're greatly appreciated. Second, for climate, I wonder if you've seen Template:ClimateCelsius and [[:Template:ClimateFarenheit? Maybe you could coordinate with User:(WT-en) Sapphire.

On starting a wiki: I think that the wikibook on starting a wiki is a very good treatment. It's not hard starting a wiki -- what's hard is sticking with it, helping people who find your wiki, keeping your mind open to good ideas, and communicating your vision to those who may not get it at first. You may also enjoy reading about wikis at MeatballWiki, a great site about communities and wikis.

Photos

Hi Evan. I am incredibly impressed with this project, and equally impressed with your direct involvement (You've solved a couple of my probs personally, and i've only been doing this a couple of days). I have many photos which seem appropriate for some of the items that are discussed. Where and when do you want photos? We have an Project:image policy that outlines the how and when to use images; it's a little dated and probably overly strict, but most of the principles still hold and if you stay within 2x-3x the rules-of-thumb it should be fine. I would prefer not to post to Project:Attraction listings. I don't really want to get involved with the technical aspects of wikivoyage (I have enough of that at work). I am however rather enjoying making updates, as I have to remember places I have visited before and learn some new things about my country (I must have driven through Cradock 20 times in the last 5 years, but never know about the egg rock or tuishuise)

As for the way I was using the Project:Listings: I'm not at all happy with it either, but thought that I would leave them there and think about it for a short while. You are right, they need to be changed.

German classes

Hey,

I have several RSS feeds for English language news services and German language news services. The German language RSS feeds have helped me relearn a few things that I've forgotten about German. The sites that I use are Welt [1] and Frankfurter Allgemeine [2], both of which are popular newspapers in Germany. Der Spiegel [3] is a Newsweek type of magazine so it's not very easy to comprehend everything printed in there, but if you want to challenge yourself it'll help. The only problem it poses for people beginning to learn German is that it's written in "written German" (Well, duh.). The problem with that is that verbs take a different form than spoken German and that can be very confusing. I see you have changed Western Cape. Other than the entry for IsPartOf not needing to be encoded, is there any other difference?

Evan, as you so kindly mentioned on Swedish Wikivoyage Report for 23 December 2006, you asked which bug reports I thought should be prioritised. I have two "top issues" where I would like your assistance; Tech:HasDocent template - translation, etc and Tech:IsIn problem on sv:. I have updated them with as much information as I can, but if there is anything you need me to clarify, please let me know. Thank you for your, as I must say, really quick reply! :-) The problem, however, is that it still does not work...the IsIn issue is not working and the guide box does still not show up (for an example of the guide issue, see Nybro). As for the IsIn issue, please have a look at Nybro, whose parent article should be Småland. The code, {{IsIn|Småland}}, is all there in edit mode, but in read-only mode - nothing. I have checked on three different computers on three different ISP's, but it is still not working as intended. I am sorry, but do you think you could have another look? Hi Evan. Just wondering what the current deal with IB is... we don't seem to have heard much about the whole thing for a while! When's the merger with World66 going to happen? It's something we're still trying to figure out. The first stage of integration is that we're developing features around personal opinion and person experience -- reviews, blogs, photo sharing, forums, etc. We're going to combine the two guides at some point, but it's not clear when. Right now, most of my time is spent sysadmining the Wikivoyage boxes and working on new software. --(WT-en) Evan 20:07, 25 January 2007 (EST)
