San Francisco Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Dear Ryan, I have just seen your edits at http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Talk:San_Francisco relating to Rudy Colombini's Center for the Performing Arts and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both at 1353-1355 Bush Street, San Francisco. To answer your question about where they belong - actually neither of these venues exist. 1353-1355 is a hotel called the James Court Hotel, aka The Nob Hill Pension http://pacificequitieswest.com/photo_html/bushstreet.html There are plans to set up a musical venue here but they are stalled, apparently due to objections. This is not going to come to fruition for at least 3-4 years, if at all.

This is really just spam, probably put there by the owner, Rudy Colombini himself, as the IP address 66.47.253.226 resolves to 835 Hyde Street - the offices of his company Pacific Equities West LLC. For some information on him and his spamming activities- please see an article on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Phr/Talk:Rudy_Colombini This article documents how he has been a persistent spammer on Wikipedia - trying to pass himself off as a member of the real band 'The Divine Comedy', advertising his hotels on an encyclopedic website, replacing links to desirable and notable hotels and establishments with those of his own.etc etc...

Actually, there is also a hell of a lot of spam been put here on Wikivoyage too from this same IP. See http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/66.47.253.226 As you can see this guy has been flagrantly deleting references to all his competitor hotels, advertising his hotels under San Fran districts that they are clearly not in, constantly editing an artice to ensure that his hotels always remain at the top of the list and advertising non-existent musical venues. I know that, unlike Wikipedia, you are allowed advertise on Wikivoyage, but surely this kind of behaviour is bad for the community. I am new to 'Wiki's' and don't quite know how to address this. Any ideas?? I was thinking of setting up a page to deal with this matter - similar to the one that was set up on Wikipedia. Do you think this would be appropriate or do you have any other ideas on how to deal with this. Would appreciate any help. Thanks (WT-en) Asterix 14:31, 7 February 2008 (EST)

I'm going to copy this note to Talk:San Francisco where others might see it. Thanks for the info. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 20:35, 7 February 2008 (EST)

WTP on Lulu

Thanks for the heads up -- that's the second time already that Lulu has just "lost" the alias to the store. Fixed now, but who knows for how long... (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:52, 4 August 2008 (EDT)

Project:Spelling has been updated. -- (WT-en) Colin 02:52, 25 October 2008 (EDT)

Thanks - I actually noticed the change after posting the comment on Talk:Edmonton/Central and thus modified my comment as follows: "To be consistent the official policy used to be to use American spelling in all articles". I never really understood why people felt so passionate about spelling, so after the ten thousandth edit war I quit following those discussions and obviously missed the change. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 17:25, 26 October 2008 (EDT)
See! I can talk in the Canadian spelling! Hehe, sorry I just wanted to say that, no harm. Keep smioling :) (WT-en) Edmontonenthusiast 17:28, 26 October 2008 (EDT)

Revert

Hi, Ryan, I see you have some problems with reverting edits. I thought I'd try and tell you how to do it. First, go into history, make sure the green dot in the circle is in the LAST TWO edits, and at the end of those edits descriptions theres (undo)...click that and then make sure by comparing the changes you're deleting the right thing. If you are, go to the bottom and click SAVE PAGE. I hope I helped. Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 16:17, 7 November 2008 (EST).

Cleveland, OH

Heya Ryan! I thought I'd ask you about Cleveland, since you've been there. How was it? It seems like a fascinating city! Do tell! Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 00:25, 11 November 2008 (EST).

It's pretty typical for the upper Midwest. How is Denver? -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:48, 11 November 2008 (EST)
Hay, thanks. If you check my userpg I've never been to Denver. I really like the city-maybe in a few years? The furthest south I've been is Yellowstone. Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 00:11, 12 November 2008 (EST).

My appology

Sorry Wrh2 and others, I put a nasty comment in that annonymous user's page. I just got so ticked off that he was being so rude and really an asshole. He (or she ?¿) has no respect and although I've seen this before, when it hit home, it really struck and now I know how others really feel. I feel sorry for them because some idiots have a twisted pleasure. Ryan, I'm using your page because you deleted my comment and I want to say sorry to you in particular. Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 18:40, 12 November 2008 (EST).

Barnstar

I haven't seen those at all on users pages! I have on WikiPEDIA not TRAVEL. To give them one just let them know and basically put in their user page, correct? Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 16:17, 14 November 2008 (EST).

Take a look at the "Links" section of Image:Barnstar.png for examples of people who have gotten them. They aren't used a lot here, but they do pop up from time to time. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 16:51, 14 November 2008 (EST)
Does it matter how many people you give them to? Also, you put it in the User Page, correct? Keep smiling ,(WT-en) ee talk 17:07, 14 November 2008 (EST). PS: Maybe I'll make em popular here!
Project:Barnstars covers most of that. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 17:13, 14 November 2008 (EST)
S'allright...I got it! Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 17:15, 14 November 2008 (EST).

Ecuador edits

One note, however, is that we actually WANT listings for restaurants and hotels in articles so that users know where they can stay (see Project:Accommodation listings and Project:Small city article template). Similarly, for a destination like the Galapagos Islands it is useful to have a list of companies offering tours. There's a fine line between a listing and spam, so it's perfectly OK to remove several paragraphs of promotional material when it gets added, but at the same time we want to make sure travelers are getting the information they need to plan a visit. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 13:28, 21 November 2008 (EST)
Ok I note that--(WT-en) Tapirlodge 14:20, 21 November 2008 (EST)
I think it will take a time but with the correct open directories and a little of work I will do the work
I think it's better to refers to open directories instead of filling list of places, What it's your opinnion about this idea?--(WT-en) Tapirlodge 14:24, 21 November 2008 (EST)
The problem is that the list content the list of the tours it's (please correct me if I'm wrong) publicity and it won't be fair for all the tour operators if the list doesn't content all the travel operators.

Now that I'm aware of all this issues I will be more careful and I will try to follow the template--(WT-en) Tapirlodge 14:30, 21 November 2008 (EST)

curiousity

Curious as to why you are skeptical about me when I arrived and now? I'd like to know. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 23:02, 25 November 2008 (EST).

Jpotokal

Can you please talk to Jani about Jani's behavior. He is being quite rude, as am I and he seems unwilling to change. Maybe Jani will get it if a janitor speaks to Jani. Just a thought as Jpotokal is being harsh and is usuing pathetic reasons. Thanks. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 23:09, 25 November 2008 (EST).

I've met Jani personally and respect his opinion a great deal. If he's got something to say it's generally worth listening to. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:31, 26 November 2008 (EST)
Wow that's real nice. So he can get away with everything and give rude remarks yet I can't? That is basically it! (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 00:36, 26 November 2008 (EST).
Based on my experience, if Jani calls me an ass (which hasn't happened) odds are that I've been an ass; if you call me an ass (which HAS happened) odds are that you're being an ass. There are a number of editors here who could be more diplomatic (and the previous sentence sadly shows that I'm one of them), but so long as those editors think before they write and offer criticism grounded in the guidelines that we've all agreed to then it's tough to fault them. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:57, 26 November 2008 (EST)
Yes it's ok for him to be like "Are you smoking crack?" but I can't say you are pissing me off. Okay. That does not make sense. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 10:37, 26 November 2008 (EST).
I think maybe if you focused a little more on just writing articles and less on needing a lot of community interaction you would be a little more in line with the mood of the site and the goals of the community – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 10:53, 26 November 2008 (EST)

No you guys hate me and dont want me to contribute in any way except damn articles. Man are you guys SO NICE! WHAT-OH AM I USING CAPS-well yeah, you guys just pushed me over the cliff when I was on the edge. Ugh. What do you want from me ? To never get me to contribute? That is what it feels like and letting Jani get away with crap doesn't go. That SICKENS me. Sorry Ryan for the caps on your talk page it is in reference to Cacahuate. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 11:40, 26 November 2008 (EST).

So I'm torn - when EE showed up I thought he/she was a troll, then he/she put a ton of effort into creating what seems to be really good article about Edmonton. Since then the behavior has reverted to exactly what one would expect from someone who was trolling (pleading victimization, ignoring advice, continuing behavior after being asked to stop) but there isn't any precedent for someone whose motivation was trolling to have spent so much time creating a good article... so I don't know. I think at this point the best solution is disengagement from all sides to let things cool off and work themselves out. If EE isn't trolling then defusing the situation will let him/her re-focus on Edmonton. If he/she is trolling then the behavior won't stop and we'll know for sure what's going on. Anyhow, that's going to be my approach. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:50, 26 November 2008 (EST)

Why did you think I was a troll at first? Let me tell you, that isn't my plans here. I just wanted to discuss oh man I feel so bad. I really do. I am a he, btw. I am sorry, sigh, like I said, I am going to cut down on discussions. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 11:53, 26 November 2008 (EST).

One thing I don't get is why you are letting Jani get away with this? why do you let him give rude remarks? Just because he has been her a while and is a janitor doesn't mean that he can get away with stuff. I am sorry if it is bringing up stuff that people don't want to talk about or it makes people angry at me. And i am sorry if I am not wanted on this page but it is a question i deserve to have an answer because I really don't get it. You seem to be avoiding it. Also, so when I call someone an "ass" it means I am an ass, yet if divine Jani says it, it doesn't mean he is an ass? What is that? I am sorry, really, and I am sorry if you hate me for it or feel like banning me or anything because I feel bad. If that is the case. It's just something I believe should be resolved. I am so truly sorry! Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 19:01, 27 November 2008 (EST).

Sorry to butt in, but since you're having this conversation about me in public...
So, EE, I have not called you (or, for that matter, anyone else) an ass, nor have I insulted you as a person in any other way. I have questioned your judgement, because I found handing out barnstars to new users who are actively causing damage to WT to be totally incomprehensible, and I was pretty blunt about it because I'm pretty protective of WT. This doesn't mean that you're an ass, or even that I think you're an ass; I just think that you're young, extremely enthusiastic and a little too easily excitable.
Let me just underline that last point: this is not personal. Nobody here "hates" you; nobody here even knows you. But here, as in everywhere else in the world, you're responsible for your actions, and that's what people judge you by. (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:46, 28 November 2008 (EST)
Thank you for the post. I liked your comment. It is nice that you care about this site. I didnt say you said I was an ass. I didnt like are you smoking crack/no i wont blow sunshine comments. That was the problem. Thank-you!!! (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 23:26, 28 November 2008 (EST).

Millersburg & Holmes County Listings

I only used a style and format similar to the others that I saw on our areas pages. I find it quite ironic that they are allowed to have their listings as they were without being classified as 'touting'. Why are those allowed to stand? A better question would probably be as to why there is a cut and burn mentality without even looking at what was posted and the fact I used what I saw (which is still standing)as an example Otherwise it really isn't worth the effort for anyone to put any information on this site that others would find useful.User:(WT-en) Silenyjizda

Highway navigation box

Hi there. I have proposed a new sort of navigation box here. I would really appreciate your input. (WT-en) Texugo 06:49, 5 December 2008 (EST)

Everyone seems really anxious to start rolling this out, but I want to make sure our strongest contributors like you are behind this, since it may very well sweep the site. The discussion is now here. If you could give it a whirl and let me know your thoughts, I would be grateful. Thanks in advance! (WT-en) Texugo 11:56, 14 December 2008 (EST)

Tout control

You do a really admirable job dealing with Project:Don't tout violations. I must confess this area is a particular weakness for me—I tend too quickly towards hard reverts and dismissals. I'll try to watch and learn ;) --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:49, 6 December 2008 (EST)

Thanks - I'm not a map maker and don't have much time for writing articles these days, so it's good to know that I'm still being useful. Given the massive amount of patrolling you do it's quite understandable that the "revert" button is your weapon of choice, rather than the lengthier approaches; like most endeavors, Wikivoyage seems to follow the 80-20 rule, with 20% of the users requiring 80% of the time. Sadly, it seems like only a very small percentage of those 20% ever stay around to make contributions beyond a listing for their own business (I can actually only think of (WT-en) one off the top of my head). -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:18, 7 December 2008 (EST)
A very different topic, but would you mind taking a look at Wikivoyage_talk:Administrator's_handbook#Protection expiry. I still haven't figured out how to set an expiry time for page protection. Thanks! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:06, 7 December 2008 (EST)

Hope these changes are good

I have done my best to follow the guidelines. On others talk pages I think I have seen an interactive add comment box at the top of their page and you don't have to edit an existing comment in order to post something to the page. Am I remembering that correctly?

ok i figured out i have to use use the plus sign link

New Zealand Departure Tax

To the best of my knowledge, the stopped the departure tax in NZ about six months ago, and its now included in ticket prices. I'll check my facts, and if required I'll add the info to the appropriate spot. --(WT-en) Inas 22:14, 16 December 2008 (EST)

It appears that it was only dropped for departures from Auckland, and is still payable elsewhere (but is being phased out). I've added the appropriate into to New Zealand#Get in. --(WT-en) Inas 22:30, 16 December 2008 (EST)
