Mobile Magic

I (coincidentally) completely re-wrote the "Disney Mobile Magic" infobox on the Walt Disney World article today, but I'm curious about your statement that it appeared to violate the external links policy. I didn't want to derail the discussion on Wikivoyage talk:Listings, but I'd be interested in understanding your thoughts on that. This seems a fairly straightforward application of the guidelines. Does the new text I wrote today work better? LtPowers (talk) 23:54, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The new text definitely makes it clearer that it is an official application, and to my eye is a great inclusion in the article. With regards to the policy, Project:External links notes that we don't link to "Map services", "Other travel guides, including audio guides, audio tours, virtual tours and webcams", and we've applied that to apps when they've come up. Particularly with the old wording that recommended getting an app from the Verizon store, that section could have easily been used as a counter-example to times when we've discouraged inclusion of local apps that offer maps, event calendars, etc.
And for the record, I think the Disney article is a great article WITH this app info in it - it's useful information for travelers, and I'm glad it's included. In general my opinion is that we're too restrictive with external links out of necessity (we haven't been able to create guidelines that let us easily distinguish good from bad), and I brought this up in the other discussion only because if push came to shove I'm not sure that links to this app would necessarily survive scrutiny based on current policy, but it's a clear example of a useful external link that makes our guides better. -- Ryan • (talk) • 01:29, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't aware we discouraged such local apps. It seems to me that if it's official, it's fair game. That's my interpretation of the policy, at least. LtPowers (talk) 03:03, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edit conflict

Ack! I had just finished overhauling the entire Image policy! --Peter Talk 04:25, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you available for a while? If so, I'll keep importing pages and let you edit them until you're done. --Peter Talk 04:26, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry - nuke my changes. I saw that you were working on Wikivoyage:Copyleft and thought I'd try to help out with the image policy. Obviously that backfired... And I'm online tonight, but trying to tackle a few different things. As usual Wikivoyage is where I go when I need a distraction, but if you'd like I can do a quick pass over anything you import, unless you tell me not to. -- Ryan • (talk) • 04:28, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll just focus on the importing for a while, now that I finished my Image policy revision. --Peter Talk 04:32, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Upload link

Do you know if we have a bugzilla entry to get the sidebar upload link to point to Commons:Special:UploadWizard yet? --Peter Talk 23:25, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not that I'm aware of. It looks like the Italians raised a related (although different) issue in bugzilla:43524. I don't know exactly what needs to be done (technically), and whether the existing discussion on the matter is sufficient, and was thus hoping someone more knowledgeable would handle this task. -- Ryan • (talk) • 23:30, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Delinking of images not yet migrated

Hi, could you kindly avoid delinking images not yet migrated? See [1], it creates issues when we try to do the migration and don't see it any longer in the what links here system :) Snowolf How can I help? 13:39, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This was done as part of the Wikivoyage:Photo hunt. All of the "(WT-en)" pages showed up on the first page of Category:Pages with broken file links. See Wikivoyage talk:Photo hunt#WT-en/WV-en pages. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:18, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's really silly tho, we're working to manually replace them one by one (Stefan lists them on his subpage, and I or somebody else goes around manually replacing them), adding a nowiki tag when the images have been migrated serves no purpose... Snowolf How can I help? 06:48, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think there's a misunderstanding - the images that were de-linked had not been migrated - there were all in Category:Pages with broken file links, and per Wikivoyage:Photo hunt images that haven't yet been migrated should be replaced with appropriate images from Commons. Wikivoyage talk:Photo hunt#WT-en/WV-en pages goes into more detail. -- Ryan • (talk) • 06:55, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
At least part of the images that were de-linked were either in the process of being migrated or had been migrated under different names... Commons has different rules for filenames and as such a lot of images got renamed to more descriptive names during the import. Snowolf How can I help? 07:05, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Camp Meeker

I thought the justice wrought on Camp meeker was rather swift? I've re-templated it, so see if anything useful comes from our new user. We can redirect or merge in due course if we need to. --Inas (talk) 04:59, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's fair. I didn't realize the Wikipedia banner had already gone live, and given that it was created with questionable capitalization and no content other than "Camp meeker" it looked like a test edit to me. -- Ryan • (talk) • 05:03, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted image ... why?

This image File:Ampel-market-stall-surabaya.jpg didn't feature any recognizable people. So what's the deal with deletion? Pratyeka (talk) 10:29, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quick delete

As I don't have the sysop bit, I recommend you quick delete this, in case you or another sysop misses it - Praise. -- OSapphire (talk) 15:38, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Done. Your account merge (& admin bit) request is pending addition of proof of identity. While I'm sure you're the same person, the merge & admin bit can't be done without proof being provided. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:41, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. I emailed LtPowers and did as he instructed, so he should be able to confirm who I am. -- OSapphire (talk) 15:43, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Hi Ryan. Thanks for the autopatrol. I'm still missing the good ol' [delete] button, but there doesn't look to be any great need for it at the moment. I'm sure that'll change in the weeks and months to come. I found that there's a big need for images for articles, and, this being my cup of tea, I'm all set. Unfortunately, in looking for Reno and Carson City pics, I discovered that our collection of these on Commons is surprisingly sub-par and outdated. If I can find a way to detach myself from my computer chair, I'll have to get out there with the camera. This looks like a great project BTW. INeverCry 02:46, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Having been without the shiny admin buttons on Commons I understand your pain :) I didn't realize there was any notification when granting autopatrol, but with the banners running on other sites editing traffic is up 15-20x normal today, and since your edits have all been good it seemed silly to allow your edits to continue being marked unpatrolled. I'll look forward to any additions you can make - our coverage of Reno (and most of northern Nevada) seems to be strongly influenced by contributions from those heading to Lake Tahoe, so any cleanups from a local would be great! -- Ryan • (talk) • 03:04, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The (User rights log) change giving me autopatrol showed up on my watchlist. On Commons I often look through recent changes to find trusted and experienced users to give autopatrol to, including admins I'm familiar with from enwiki. It helps the project and encourages good editors. Anyways, I'm sure I'll be able to do quite a bit of work on Northern NV stuff. There's certainly alot to be done. This place will really get going soon enough, and then I can do some {{delete}} tagging as well (my specialty). INeverCry 03:33, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WDW protection

Not that I'm complaining exactly, but I wanted to make sure you've seen both these discussions: 1 and 2. --Peter Talk 09:01, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You pulled the trigger again awfully quickly. The most recent spate were quickly reverted. And this edit from earlier in the day spurred me to check and revise the price seasons, so I consider it constructive. The level of vandalism is high but I don't think it's excessive right now. LtPowers (talk) 16:05, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I'm mis-reading the discussions. The first one Peter linked seems to be ongoing, and the second seems to indicate that IP protection is OK. Existing policy is that articles that get high volumes of IP vandalism should be protected for 24 hours, which is what I've done - autopatrolled users can still edit as normal. Revert if I've misread, but given the visibility of that article and the amount of work for patrollers currently it seems strange to make an exception to normal policy. The link you provided is to a USA Today article about a soccer player, by the way :-P -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:15, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Copy+paste error, sorry. Fixed. LtPowers (talk) 16:41, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Part of the problem now is that we have so many brand new users coming in. And actually, even when we won't, featured articles are still going to be the first natural place that new editors try editing. --Peter Talk 19:36, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Admin rights on pt and es

Hi Ryan. Who do I need to see to get admin/burocrat rights restored on pt and es? Texugo (talk) 15:59, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That I don't know. There's a discussion on the subject at [2], so you might try posting something there. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:05, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, in case it wasn't clear, if you go through the Wikivoyage:User account migration and then send me an email requesting an account merge I can give you admin rights here since I've gotten email from you before and thus can confirm that you're the same person that way. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:11, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Admin's Barnstar
For all the time you spend helping others, and for your dedication to this project. INeverCry 19:59, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Hopefully with the move to Wikimedia more people will get involved with this project and the "all the time you spend" part of this barnstar can then be changed to "the completely reasonable and non-life-consuming amount of time you spend" :) -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:07, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That all depends on which "people" we're referring to. There's always less supply of dedicated, experienced users than demand. If you can find enough new admins and patrollers to keep up with the influx of new general users, vandals, trolls, confused people, spammers, socks, etc, you'll be ok. Otherwise you'll end up even more bleary-eyed at the end of each day. More good admins is the answer. But it's hard to find willing and able people for this though. Most of the ones I've approached on Commons for RFAs have given me a quick "no". INeverCry 20:42, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Levoca

Hi Ryan - I notice you deleted some of the stuff on Levoca which I had translocated from Wikipedia (and which incidentally I wrote there in the first place). I am used to relocating text between articles in Wikipedia without any problems, but I gather from your comments this doesn't apply here in the same way. Can you please clarify the rules for me? Re-created content

Hi Ryan. The page Swastika‎ has been re-created with offensive content. Can you indef protect the page after it's deleted to prevent another repeat? If you delete other offensive page names, protection is always a good option to prevent re-creation, as no one but trolls and vandals are going to create these pages. INeverCry 02:51, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thanks for the note. -- Ryan • (talk) • 02:54, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Ryan. Racism is a big pet peeve of mine. I don't see much of it on Commons, thankfully, but when I do, the person doing it gets indef-blocked on sight. INeverCry 03:17, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Traditionally we've been pretty sparing in using blocks, although there is discussion underway about making our policies a bit more like other Wikimedia projects: Wikivoyage talk:How to handle unwanted edits#Policy on permanently blocking users. As abhorrent as some of the content that the trolls post is, I've always seen it as a very misguided attempt to get attention, and as such more sad than upsetting. -- Ryan • (talk) • 03:29, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For experienced and thick-skinned folks like us, it may be more sad and repulsive than upsetting. And since we're admins, we deal with these people regularly, and expect to see trolling and vandalism. But every day users don't usually see it that way. I deal hard with racism, personal attacks, anti-LGBT, etc, in order to protect regular/good users from being offended and chased away. I want people to feel welcome and comfortable on Commons, and any where else. I had a sysop on en.wiki come down hard on me once for "over-warning" an IP editor. The IP ended up being blocked soon after as a sock. I lean toward protecting established users rather than trying to rehab trolls and vandals into being good users. I don't see that happening too often. INeverCry 03:56, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About my blocks

Hi, I normally make blocks (related to sockpuppetry) on the Simple and English Wikipedia. I didn't know about the User ban nomination page before blocking the sockfarm. The user in question is Huik01, a user who was blocked in December 2009 on Simple and proceeded to make multiple one-time use accounts and then registering more. He has over 50 accounts on Simple. Here's an incomplete list of them: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Sockpuppets_of_Huik01 —The preceding comment was added by Bsadowski1 (talkcontribs)

We're in the process of trying to bring our policies more in line with other Wikimedia projects, and there seems to be some agreement to allow blocks from other sites to be applied here when it's a case of obvious vandalism - see Wikivoyage talk:How to handle unwanted edits#Users_blocked.2Fbanned_on_other_WMF_sites. In the case of the user you just blocked, he's been trolling here for many years (see pcv), so having the ability to identify sockpuppets is much appreciated. -- Ryan • (talk) • 05:55, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Revision deletions

Hi Ryan. I noticed you blocked an IP, Special:Contributions/68.84.243.130, a few days ago, and that he had vandalised my userpage. It appears that revision has been deleted, however [4]. Was personal information disclosed? Thanks in advance, JamesA >talk 00:44, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User:Snowolf was the one who hid that revision so you may need to check with him. I'm unable to view it - apparently you need "Oversight" permission, which I don't have. -- Ryan • (talk) • 01:23, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Website Removal

Ryan I am a employee of this business invertsports dot com and just thought it was very helpful to let fellow travelers know that we offer travel services they may be interested in. Our company services 13 western states and over 300 lakes, rivers and reservoirs. It's hard finding companies that offer watercraft services at many lakes and I think it would be helpful on their vacation as I have run into the same situation. If invertsports dot com could be removed from the violations that would be great! However if that not an option, thats understandable it's wiki website so they can do what they want. —The preceding comment was added by 208.54.86.211 (talkcontribs)

I definitely don't want to discourage you from contributing, and I apologize if it seemed like I was doing so. I just wanted to make you aware of some differences between Wikivoyage and Wikipedia, particularly as it relates to templates, and to also note that to be compliant with the CC-SA license it is important to ensure that any copied text is properly attributed to the original authors.
Either Wikivoyage talk:Using Mediawiki templates or the talk page for a new template is a good place to discuss new templates. See Template talk:worldimagemap for an example. -- Ryan • (talk) • 23:15, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Curious

Hello. I was curious as to why Houston shouldn't be listed as a major city in the USA? Thank you. MrLewis (talk)MrLewis

Wikivoyage has a policy of limiting city lists to no more than 9 for most country/region articles. When you edit the "Cities" section of the USA article there is a long comment in the source asking that any changes to the cities list please first be discussed on the article's talk page - see Talk:United States of America/Archive 2009#Nine Cities for one example of a recent discussion on the topic. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:51, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do I really need to get approval of a modified version of Template:Delete/bot? Hopefully :/) is more of a waste of time.. -- Cheers, Riley 04:23, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New templates are usually tagged experimental as a matter of process (per Project:Using Mediawiki templates) and to ensure that there's a reason for having them around. This one is probably uncontroversial, so just explain its purpose on the talk page and how it will be used, and that's probably sufficient. -- Ryan • (talk) • 04:31, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

For me, it is quite important and urgent that I get an answer to the Question I posed at Wikivoyage_talk:Image_policy#Proposal_to_change_default_thumbnail_size: Why are you restricting the pick list to only seven? Do you think it is not technically possible to have a choice of ten thumbnail widths of 150px, 180px, 200px, 220px, 250px, 300px, 350px, 400px, 450px and 500px in that pick list? Upgrade an article status

Hi, Ryan. How can I upgrade an article status from 'usablecity' to 'guidecity'? Does it require an inspection from others before the upgrade? -- Jkonwp (talk) 17:29, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikivoyage:Article status has guidelines on this issue - anyone can change the status, except for star articles:
"Star articles must go through a nomination process before their status is changed, but for any other article status anyone can plunge forward and change the status tag at the end of the article ({{guidecity}}, {{usablecountry}} and so on, see the links above for the full list). But if somebody objects and reverts your change, then state your reasons on the Talk page and let the community work out a consensus."
Hope that helps. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:35, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

constructive criticism

Hey Ryan, I'm still floundering my way through Kitsap Peninsula article, it seems every time I figure out a way to make it all work together I run into some other little tidbit of info that makes it not out work so well. The whole area is covered with little tiny 'towns' some of which might just have a dock and a store and many of which are right next to each other. It is amazing how much info is out there and nobody has ever tried to put it all together before. Its a lot more of a challenge than the Yellowstone Country to work on. A good example is Fox Island which really only has one store/gas station but a lot of natural things to do. Believe it or not I'm trying to keep it short and focused, I could write volumes just about the scuba diving in that area. I'm hoping you could just take a look and see what you think. --Lumpytrout (talk) 23:39, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think the way you're going about it makes sense. Typically, most places that are on the bottom of the geographic hierarchy use the Wikivoyage:Small city article template, even if they are an island like Fox Island - that template has the section headings you would want for somewhere that isn't sub-divided. With respect to Kitsap Peninsula, the Finger Lakes or Bali articles might be good guidelines to follow as they are both rural areas with small towns throughout. We've had trouble coming up with a good way to handle region articles that aren't states or countries, so unfortunately we don't have a lot of great examples to use and there have actually been proposals made to change our region templates to better reflect the fact that most good information ends up at the bottom-level articles.
If you'd like additional feedback you can post a message at Wikivoyage:Requests for comment#Articles and others will chime in. -- Ryan • (talk) • 03:23, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
thanks, I'm reading through the areas you suggested and have already developed some better organizational ideas. I took my first adventure based on Wikivoyage this weekend to Lakebay, it was somewhat humbling to try to use my own data and definatley helped to gain perspective on what info is important. Removing all kind of links(?)

To my surprise, you removed all kind of links of the article The Netherlands.

I kind of understand the idea that an article shouldn't be full of external links. Nevertheless practical links about museums and railway-information might be very helpfull to tourists. Please be some more selective as it comes to removing links and/or at least otherwise add some information by yourself so that the article keeps as informative!--VanuitVoorburg (talk) 13:13, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In the edit of mine which you reverted I left a pointer to Wikivoyage:External links#What not to link to in the edit summary to explain the change. Wikivoyage allows links only to primary sources, so while it is OK to link to the web site of the national railway or a specific museum, links to secondary sites, particularly other travel guides, are not appropriate for the reasons outlined in that policy page. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:56, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

In reaction to your message: I went to the link you left and read some information of the policy, yet you moved lots of external links which also leaded to public transport planning and to information about Dutch museums. These aren't no travel guides, but just informative sites of non-profit organisations (I double checked many of these links). Maybe there're a few to much links but please not remove those who can be helpfull as the article itself isn't still always that extensive/informative.--VanuitVoorburg (talk) 15:10, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ryan, i hope you are doing fine. I started to update Musandam Peninsula as a result of my last trip in the region. Dibba is a small border town, that in essence is spread over two UAE Emirates (Sharjah and Fujairah) and the Omani exclave Musandam. Initially i set up a disamb page but user travelpleb is true that for one city, we shouldn't set up two or three articles because that would not benefit the traveller. How shall i incorporate this within the geographical hierarchy? There are distinctive differences between the parts (Sharjah is a dry Emirate = no alcohol, Oman requires border check, Fujairah is focused on tourism). I would be glad to hear your opinion as i don't want to start a major fuss. Thank you and regards, jan (talk) 17:00, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

islands

Maybe splitting hairs here but convention for small islands is city not region. Wikivoyage:Article templates#What template should be used for islands?. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:56, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The small city article template makes sense for organizing information, but I'm not sure that the Template:Usablecity text makes sense for an island and I always thought that it was supposed to be used only for actual cities/towns. This topic might benefit from broader discussion if you feel like bringing it up in the pub or elsewhere. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:10, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Icon links

Hey Ryan, do you know what the next steps are to implement our "rough consensus for the time being" on icon links? That's an outstanding issue I'd be happy to see resolved. --Peter Talk 03:18, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

RSChen nom

Yes. I had forgotten about the unanimous requirement. Let me think about that. --RegentsPark (talk) 16:47, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK. Since we don't really have a consensus mechanism similar to Wikipedia, I guess we have to sort of fake the process a bit. Why don't I just leave my objection on for a day or so. If no one else is bothered by it, I'll withdraw it and we'll have a unanimous vote (and a proxy for consensus). Does that work? --RegentsPark (talk) 17:05, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That would be much appreciated. Your concerns are valid, but given the broad support it would be a shame to see this nomination fail if those concerns aren't shared by others. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:08, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Neither would I. As the wiki grows, we probably shouldn't be looking for unanimous support anyway. --RegentsPark (talk) 17:12, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing to say

Hi! Just so you know, pages like User:EstelaJar are actually created by spambots, so you can block them (see m:User:Mathonius/Reports/Nothing to say about me really for more information). --Rschen7754 02:04, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I was aware that the "Nothing to say about me..." pattern was a spambot, but I've only seen a handful of user pages created like "EstelaJar" where the pattern was a detailed address and a web site, so since I wasn't 100% positive of it being a bot I was a bit more cautious. -- Ryan • (talk) • 02:10, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Listing converter bot

Hey there. I was wondering if, after finishing the listing conversion here, you might be willing to adapt the bot to portuguese (with my help) and run it on pt: as well. I believe there will be a one-to-one correspondence so simply substituting the portuguese words in the bot should work, and there are probably only a few hundred pages which have anything to be converted. I know next to nothing about creating/running bots. Could you possibly find time to help us out? Texugo (talk) 01:24, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Most definitely. Let's get en: done first, and it should then be simple enough to swap the code to Portuguese if you can provide me the correct tag and attribute translations. Please just remind me of this conversation once en: is finished as I've got a lot going on lately. -- Ryan • (talk) • 01:36, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I really appreciate it! Texugo (talk) 01:41, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm wondering if "tags", "wikipedia", "phoneextra" and "hoursextra" fields should simply be converted as valid fields (even if {{listing}} currently doesn't use them for anything) instead of causing conversion to skip the page with a logged warning. All appear to be either fields which were proposed here (and already exist in some other language WV) or are documented as valid in mw:extension:listings (even if, like "tags", they do nothing). This would reduce the number of pages being skipped, although actual mistakes (such as "web" instead of "url") would still continue to be flagged as exceptions. K7L (talk) 19:25, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll update the bot to do that. Ideally it would be nice to get rid of some of the unused fields, but since that's likely to involve a minimum of several days of discussion I'll leave that battle to someone else :) -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:10, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

css for making ext links appear in black

Hi Ryan. Thanks again for all the awesome work you're doing. I wonder if you know the answer to this: I see the css code at Mediawiki:Common.css that makes the external links for that respective talk page appear in black and light up when hovered over, leaving only the blue arrow icon at the side. I would like to implement that across the site on pt: but I don't know how to adapt the code to make it work for the whole site. Do you know what code I should add? Texugo (talk) 19:48, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You should be able to just remove the first part of the rule ("body.page-Wikivoyage_talk_External_links"), which is saying "only on this page", and I think that should then cause it to apply everywhere:
/* display links as black text except when hovered or active */
div#content a.external, div#content a.external:visited {
    color: black;
}
div#content a.external:hover, div#content a.external:focus {
    color: #0645ad;
}
Let me know if there are any issues. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:08, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's what I thought, but it doesn't seem to work, at least not in testing from my user common.css page, despite clearing the cache a bajillion times. Texugo (talk) 20:12, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looking closer, it appears that Mediawiki may be using a more specific CSS rule. Try it with the above changes - if that doesn't work I'll do some experimenting after work today. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:18, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That seems to have done the trick. Thanks a lot! Texugo (talk) 20:22, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template:O

Hi, Ryan. I noticed you removed [[Template:O]] from wherever it was used on the site. However, it might have been better to subst: before deleting it. I see Andre deleted it, though, so that may not have been an option. Maybe use quotation marks instead? It just looks like some of the semantics were lost by just removing the template and not replacing it with something. Some of the cases in which it was used may no longer make sense. Any thoughts? LtPowers (talk) 12:47, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All that template did was highlight text green, so removing it should just leave plain text. Is there an example of where something no longer makes sense? -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:14, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The one I found was here, where "I already wrote that the map is wrong and that the Tawi-Tawi islands and Polillo Island is more correct." became "I already wrote that the map is wrong and that the Tawi-Tawi islands and Polillo Island is more correct." The first refers to a phrase as being correct, the second appears to refer to the islands themselves as being correct. (Granted, Alice should have used quotation marks even with the green coloring, but now there's nothing to delimit those words as part of a phrase separate from the normal syntax of the sentence.) There may be others. LtPowers (talk) 15:30, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Alice was the only user of that template so I'll let him/her update any comments that might seem unclear. Alternately, if you'd prefer then I can rollback all of my edits to remove it, although doing so will hide the plain text with a red template link. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:54, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if that's necessary; I just wanted to make a suggestion for the future. LtPowers (talk) 17:17, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Portuguese listing conversion

Hi Ryan! Thanks for you message and I'm sorry I didn't get back to you quicker. Here are the translations:

			"see" = "veja"
			"do" = "faça"
			"buy" = "compre"
			"eat" = "come"
			"drink" = "beba"
			"sleep" = "durma"
			"listing" = "item"

XML attribute & template attributes:

			"name" = "nome"
			"alt" = "alt"
			"url" = "site"
			"email" = "email"
			"address" = "endereço"
			"lat" = "lat"
			"long" = "long"
			"directions" = "direções"
			"phone" = "tel"
			"tollfree" = "telgratis"
			"fax" = "fax"
			"hours" = "funcionamento"
			"price" = "preço"
			"checkin" = "checkin"
			"checkout" = "checkout"
			"tags" = ''we don't have this field''
			"wikipedia" = ''we don't have this field''
			"phoneextra" = ''we don't have this field''
			"priceextra" = ''we don't have this field''
			"hoursextra" = ''we don't have this field''

The description field is called "sobre" and is mandatory, and whatever misspelling rules you used for en: will be fine, since I think most of the ones we have were just copied from en:. Please let me know if there's anything else you need. And thanks a lot! Texugo (talk) 14:53, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I'm not sure I'll have a chance to update the bot this weekend, but will get to it as soon as possible and try a few test pages once ready. I'll let you know when that's done, and if you could then help me get the bot flag for pt:User:Wrh2Bot then it shouldn't take long to update the rest of the pt: pages. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:46, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! One detail I forgot to mention-- we decided against splitting everything onto separate lines, preferring everything on one line just like the XML listings... Texugo (talk)
Hey, Ryan. Thanks so much. I have looked through a sampling of what was done and haven't found any problems. Looks good! Texugo (talk) 01:16, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

weird bot conversion

hey Ryan,

I've noticed a few weird things on some listings and I hope you can shed some light on them. On Port Orchard for example under the Get in by boat section there is that pink square thing? I have a feeling it is because I entered the latitude longitude in the wrong way, but I thought you may have run into this before? Lumpytrout (talk) 17:12, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There may be a discussion in the Pub about this, but it looks like User:Torty3 made a change to Template:Listing that is causing your issue ([6]). Unfortunately I don't know the details, so Torty3 or the Pub might be a better way to get this resolved. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:15, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Don't the lat/long fields require decimal coordinate values? That particular listing had degree/minute/second values in it (which i have removed). Texugo (talk) 17:17, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are a ton of incorrectly formatted lat/long coordinates - Category:Pages with malformed coordinate tags was created to catch bad coordinates in geo tags, so something similar may be needed for listings. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:18, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That wasn't the only problem though. Torty3's change was adding a magically empty pink box in front of every listing with coords. I reverted that change for the time being. Texugo (talk) 19:24, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed that reverting the listing template changes for now makes sense - as you noted, every listing with a "lat" parameter was getting a box, and that seems premature since the dynamic maps aren't deployed yet. With respect to the incorrectly formatted coordinates in Port Orchard#Get in, however, it might be best to leave them be, and we can then run a bot or find some way to ensure that all coordinates across the site are formatted in the expected format. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:36, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Lat/long coordinates are especially important to boaters so I tried to put them in whenever I could find them for marinas, but obviously these were listed in many different non WV standard ways so I'm sure I'm guilty of mislabeling some. Lumpytrout (talk) 20:20, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I already changed the coords for that one list in Port Orchard, but in the future you might want to be sure you use only decimal coordinates to prevent weird errors. That particular one was causing the name of the listing not to be shown - when you put degree/minute/hour format in there, the quotation mark character interferes with the software's ability to render the whole listing properly. Texugo (talk) 20:28, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wrh2Bot

Hi Ryan, I'm evaluating the possibility to apply your bot on it:voy as well in order to convert the listing tag insto listing template, so I'm writing you to know how was the experience with en:voy and if you think that can be repeatable on it:voy that use extensively the tags. Let me know your firsts impressions and then maybe we try to set up something together. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:14, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I just ran it on pt:, so the work has been done to support non-English languages. See #Portuguese listing conversion above for the info I would need to get it running on it:, and let me know if this is something that it: Wikivoyage decides to do. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:49, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I assume that everything went fine, otherwise this bot hasn't ran into pt:voy :-)
Regarding the parameters name, there's no need to translate them. Currently we have the English ones and we can still use them. In case I can translate them afterwards by myself (but I'm 90% sure that we'll keep them as they are).
We don't have wikipedia, and neither the other 3 "extra"-fields.
One question about tags. Currently we have it, but it's not managed its visualization. I've also noticed that the listing buttons do not include it in the template inserted during edit-session. Can we suppress it? Or for certain reason is still usefull? --Andyrom75 (talk) 17:39, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"tags" was meant to generate RDF, but the current version of Template:Listing ignores it. Just to make sure I understand, it:Template:Listing should use English attributes and the same format as is used on English Wikivoyage? If so then executing the bot would be really easy, but you may first want to update it:Template:Listing to match the English version - at a minimum you'll need to add the "content" attribute, or else we'll need to figure out if the bot should use a different format for listing content than was used on English Wikivoyage. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:56, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think that a future will manage tags or it can be definitely removed?
I need to revise/import all the listing "related" template (e.g. see, do, etc...). Do you have a comprehensive list? Just to be sure of not fogetting anything. However, I'm going to start it now.
I agree that the conversion would be quite easy, but considering that you already has the script, this means that I can avoid of writing another one from zero :-)
Apart the the straight translation from tag to template, have you ever tried to convert a generic list of stuff into template? I've found this tool that apparently do nice conversions (maybe not automatically). --Andyrom75 (talk) 20:48, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've just finished the importing of the templates: Listing, See, Do, Buy, Eat, Drink, Sleep. Let me know if I have to import seomthing else. --Andyrom75 (talk) 21:38, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delayed response. I've added an item to my TODO list for the week to run the bot on a few test pages in it:, and once that's done hopefully it can be given the bot flag and then convert the remaining articles. I'll let you know when it's ready, but give me a few days, possibly until the weekend, depending on how busy this week gets. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:00, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, no problem, I'll wait for your (few) test pages. In the meanwhile a couple of thing:
  • I think I've imported all the needed templates (see above), but let me know if I've missed anything
  • During your "translation" remove the tags attribute (I mean, just don't import it). I think you can do it all at once, otherwise let me know, and I'll remove by myself with my bot.
  • Have you taken a look at the external tools? There's something that can be added?
--Andyrom75 (talk) 05:56, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The bot is written in Java, and the external tools are python, so I don't think there's an easy way to integrate them. If I do an update in the future I'll let you know and then hopefully that could also be run on it: -- Ryan • (talk) • 06:22, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. What about the other two points? --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:38, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Italian translation

Ryan, I've partially reconsider the English-Italian translation. Although I reconfirm that the name of the template shall remain the same (i.e. see, do, etc...). The name of the attributes should change this way:

			"name" = "nome"
			"alt" = "alt"
			"url" = "sito"
			"email" = "email"
			"address" = "indirizzo"
			"lat" = "lat"
			"long" = "long"
			"directions" = "indicazioni"
			"phone" = "tel"
			"tollfree" = "numero verde"
			"fax" = "fax"
			"hours" = "orari"
			"price" = "prezzo"
			"checkin" = "checkin"
			"checkout" = "checkout"
			"tags" = to NOT import (hence to suppress)
			"wikipedia" = N/A
			"phoneextra" = N/A
			"priceextra" = N/A
			"hoursextra" = N/A
			"content" = "descrizione"

A couple of things.

  1. Are you able to highlight me/us the presence of other attributes used inside those XML tag? Like a mispell (e.g. adress) or other more creatives :-) Just to mitigate the risk of losing something on the way... or, from another point of view, to take the chance to properly clean old mistakes.
  2. I've seen in few en:voy articles that has been decided to put a blank row (i.e. \n or
    ... as you wanna call it) below the listing.
Please DON'T do it when the listing is in a numbered (i.e. #) or unnumbered (i.e. *) list, because is unnecessary, and I've lavished a lot of effort on removing it. On the otherhand, if those blank rows, were pre-existent, please consider the possibility of removing them (JUST in a consequent list not in other cases like a stand alone listing or in between other stuff like image etc...).

--Andyrom75 (talk) 08:02, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Responses:
  1. If there is an attribute that has content that isn't recognized the bot reports an error and doesn't change anything, so no content should be lost. Attributes with common misspellings will be automatically corrected ("adress" → "address")
  2. The bot just replaces the XML ("<tag>...</tag>"), so it won't affect newlines or any other content outside of the XML tag.
  3. Responding to your earlier points, translation to Italian and removal of the "tags" attribute won't be an issue, I just need to tweak the code.
-- Ryan • (talk) • 14:56, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarifications. As specified in the above second point, do you think that would be feasible to eliminate the blank rows between two points of a list, or this tweak could generate some unxepected issue? --Andyrom75 (talk) 17:31, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For any changes other than converting the XML listing to a template listing a separate bot will be needed - you may be able to use something like w:Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser for those sorts of style cleanups. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:37, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, it's something that I regolarly do. I've just tried to take advantage of one single change for each page, but if you think that it's better to separate these stuff, I'm ok with that. So, just give me a whistle when you'll be ready to make the first changes. --Andyrom75 (talk) 18:06, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Look at this page correct the info for your bot if you see any mistake. --Andyrom75 (talk) 19:28, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Modules and common.css

Shaundd has suggested me to contact you & Torty about a question that I've made him few days ago. Please read it and let me know your opinion. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:45, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As Shaundd noted, you may be able to do a CSS @import ([7]), but in practice you almost always want to use fewer JS and CSS files as every file request slows down page rendering, sometimes significantly if the browser must pause rendering while waiting for the file. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:31, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My target is to have common.css filled with only @import rules, so that all the files will be loaded in parallel at the same time. This should statistically increase the speed. But the main target is to able to maintain better the CSS content, in fact during this activity I've found a group of styles repeated twice :-) I'm also confidente to find several other style not used (anymore?) in the site and I want to remove them all. --Andyrom75 (talk) 19:36, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • A Top 12 [8] is not in the Central area of Lalibela as you (mistakenly) suggested with this revert. Please put the interests of the traveller first rather than the current heterodoxy.

If it is really important to you to have an image display at a fixed pixel width of 300px, rather than let the user decide their image display preferences, then edit accordingly rather than abuse the revert facility. -- Alice 16:02, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

meta:What is a troll?#Misidentified trolls, in particular "don't do that then". I don't think you're actually a troll, but you're most definitely trolling. If you want to ignore pointers to existing policies and discussions and ensure that every edit you make has at least one "fix" to your preferred style then don't be surprised if people eventually start treating you like a troll and just reverting your edits. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:12, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My "preferred style" with regard to image and external links format is actually also the preferred style of the majority of registered users that have expressed a preference on the relevant policy discussion pages. It's hardly my fault that the big beasts haven't got around to updating the relevant policies yet.
Now, I'm not wanting to edit war so please go back and correct the article so that travellers are not misled.
Incidentally, when folks do get around to updating the external links policy page, are you personally going to go back and change all those silly changes to footnote link style you have made? -- Alice 16:35, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Hello Ryan, what made all image map templates marked for speedy deletion? --Saqib (talk) 18:02, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Imagemap/doc was tagged with {{speedy}}, and all of the image map templates were including that documentation page. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:24, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An includeonly tag should have been used. --Rschen7754 19:56, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Facebook links

Hi Ryan. Hmm.. I was not aware that we can reached any consensus for that change. The last discussion I remembered was at Wikivoyage_talk:Listings#What if the future looked like this? where I myself proposed adding them, but there was significant disagreement. I guess I was not aware that Peter had gone ahead and added the exception to policy and am rather surprised it slipped by without catching some of the same objections my proposal did. Both discussions seem to have happened around the same time... Texugo (talk) 15:41, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding was that some people opposed the "what if the future..." idea due to allowing multiple links for a business and a general dislike for promoting one social networking service over another. However, I think Peter's policy page clarification was that Facebook links are only inappropriate when they are a secondary link, but if they represent the business's primary online presence then Facebook would be no different from any other hosting provider. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:48, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. I don't necessarily object, but I am just a bit surprised that the change went through based on such a short discussion. It was completely under the radar for me. Texugo (talk) 15:51, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

Hi! Thanks for getting rid of that sudden spate of vandalism; I wasn't quite sure what to do! I reverted all that I could, blanked the new pages he created and posted here - is that the right response? :) --Nick talk 23:19, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, either that or just ignore them. Occasionally the trolls show up when no one's around and manage to deface a few articles, but most of the time the next admin to log on sees it and cleans it up quickly. Speaking of which, if you have any interest in the shiny buttons then I'd be happy to nominate you - you've done awesome things around here. -- Ryan • (talk) • 23:23, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for the advice! I'd be honoured to be nominated for 'demotion' - it's very kind of you to offer! :) --Nick talk 23:28, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Prepare to receive awesome superpowers in about 14 days. -- Ryan • (talk) • 23:39, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Buffalo district articles

Ryan -

Sometime over the next few weeks I will be moving the Buffalo district articles from userspace to mainspace. The district articles still contain legacy XML listings. I wonder if, when the move occurs, you could reactivate the bot that you used to auto-update them to Template:Listing. Please let me know.

-- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 20:09, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Anything with legacy XML listings in mainspace should automatically show up in Category:Articles using legacy listings, and once it's in that category I can run the bot against it - let me know when you've done the move and I'll try to get it run shortly thereafter. Another version of the bot also ran to convert footnote links to front-links, so let me know the article names if you'd like me to run that bot against your articles. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:14, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bot help for Russian Wikivoyage

Hi Ryan!

May we ask for your help on Russian Wikivoyage? We would like to do some massive replacements, namely:

i) listing tags --> listing template (its format is slightly different from that on en:)

ii) external links (same way as you recently did on en:)

Would you be willing to help us with these tasks? --Alexander (talk) 20:54, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be happy to help, although it might be several days before I'm able to do much - I'm busy right now trying to work out the remaining bugs in the text-to-listing bot for en:. Could you provide me with the same details about the Russian XML as was done for #Portuguese listing conversion so that I can look into setting up a config for the bot that does the appropriate conversion, and time permitting I'll run a few tests on a sandbox page on ru: to get your feedback? Again, it will probably be several days or longer before I get to it, so hopefully a delay isn't a problem. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:03, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Of course, the delay is no problem. Could you activate your bot account at ru:, so that I can ask our bureaucrat to grant you the bot rights? Regarding the details of Russian XML, there is not much to say. We never translated any of the fields, they are all written in English in the same manner as here. The main difference is that we have not created individual templates for {{sleep}}, {{eat}}, etc. They are all written as {{listing|type=sleep|...}}. Another difference is that I included the asterisk (item entry) into the template, in order to facilitate other possible formats like tables that we may try to introduce in the future. Therefore, the asterisks should be simply removed, and empty lines between the listings should be removed as well. Finally, the description field is called 'description', not 'content'. However, I am about to add 'content' as an alternative, simply for the sake of compatibility with en:
That's all, I think. Does it sound feasible? Please, feel free to ask further questions. --Alexander (talk) 22:08, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've logged in with the bot account, so it should now be active. Everything you've mentioned sounds feasible except for removing blank lines between listings - I think that is better handled with a separate bot since it would add additional complexity. I'll set up a sandbox on Russian Wikivoyage and let you know when I've run a few test conversions so that you can review them and make sure everything is OK. -- Ryan • (talk) • 23:11, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! You have been given the bot rights. --Alexander (talk) 06:13, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The English text-to-listing conversion is done, so the Russian XML-to-template conversion is next on my list. I should be able to start on it in the next couple of days. -- Ryan • (talk) • 07:04, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Asdefyn

Hey, sorry, I was wondering why you are reverting all this user's additions of page banners. Surely they are not all absolutely horribly worse than the default banner, are they? At least the ones I clicked on were the correct size... Texugo (talk) 16:42, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, never mind. I see now the note on his talk page... Texugo (talk) 16:43, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think we need to apply a short block to grab his attention. He's adding copyrighted banners while you are removing others. Globe-trotter (talk) 16:45, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you guys could keep an eye on this I'd be grateful, but talk page messages to this user over the past couple of days haven't gotten any response, and almost every banner I search for from this user comes up with results on other sites. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:47, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help

Hi Ryan. Thanks for notification.

I had a look at the policies regarding touting and external linking and I couldn't see how I overstepped. I apologise and therefore I need help.

Holidaying/vacationing is the most popular reason for visitors coming to Fiji with honeymoons and romantic getaways being the most common. I'd like to add this important piece of information on the wikivoyage Fiji page with a link to my Fiji honeymoon section, on my free Fiji holiday information website (not travel), for visitors wanting more information.

I had added, before it was removed, a tourism section as I thought this was the best structure for the page.

How should I structure it? Thank you. --Fijiisparadise (talk) 03:50, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at Wikivoyage:External links#What not to link to and let me know if you still have questions. Also, articles follow templates with standard headings - Fiji uses Wikivoyage:Country article template, and general information about holidays would most like go under the "See" or "Do" section. -- Ryan • (talk) • 03:58, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help for fr:voy

The parameters are

{{Listing
|nom=name
|alt=alt
|latitude=lat
|longitude=long
|url=url
|adresse=address
|direction=directions
|téléphone=phone
|fax=fax
|email=email
|horaire=hours
|prix=price
|arrivée=check-in
|départ=check-out
|description= contents between tags
}}

Let me know if you accept the request and if you need more informations. Thanks--Adehertogh (talk) 18:11, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can definitely do this, but I promised to do that conversion for ru: first. Once Russian is done I'll follow up with French by creating a sandbox and running a few tests that you can review - that may take a few days depending on how busy this week is, so hopefully that's OK. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:25, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: banners

Hi, thank you for bringing that to my attention. I wasn't fully aware that adding flags to banners was still in discussion before being adopted into a policy. Identities

I was interested to read your blog http://mountaininterval.org/journal/2013/06/12/still-innocent/ about your (relatively short duration) identity trials and tribulations where you wrote you "had basically no means available to do anything about it" and I'm so glad that you were able to clear things up in the end. I've sent you (what I regard as an) important e-mail on this topic to your gmail address, so please notify me if you've changed the address you had in Sepember 2012, Ryan. --W. Franke-mailtalk 15:09, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a steward, so there isn't anything I can do with respect to the existing checkuser - w:User talk:W. Frank#Blocked is the place to start. With that said, whether you and Alice are one person, two people, or ten people, what raised red flags around here is the fact that you've (both) ticked every single box under meta:What is a troll?#Misidentified trolls, and done so on many, many occasions. While it's possible that you are correct and the admins (and many of the regular users) here are some sort of cabal that are more concerned with wiki policies than writing a good travel guide, isn't it more likely that we're all just doing our best to accommodate a huge variety of opinions, personalities and styles and to try and channel that into the best possible travel reference? When one (or two, or ten) person ignores, belittles, or outright dismisses the opinions of others it is hugely problematic in a medium that requires respecting what others say and assuming they do so in good faith. Unfortunately, despite the good contributions you often make, you, Alice, and whatever IP accounts you use continue to attack other people (to cite two examples directed at me, apparently I'm a "luddite" and working to ensure that IB has the better site), ignore opinions you don't agree with, and generally make it more difficult to do something that most of us do as an escape.
If you really do want to contribute to making this site better, please work with the stewards to clear the sockpuppet blocks, explain why you and Alice have exactly the same obscure interests despite apparently living on opposite ends of the earth, but more importantly quit passively-aggressively lashing out and learn to let things go, even if you're 100% sure you're right and everyone else is wrong. You may feel that people here are against you, but it's worth noting that the vast majority of contributors get along fine with everyone else, so while we could do better, odds are that it's not just us. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:22, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Still flags in banners on certain pages

Hi Ryan, I still see flags in the page banners on Sweden, Norway, and Somaliland...shouldn't these be removed if we have yet to reach a consensus on adding these decorations? Thanks, Vacationer (talk) 13:35, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

plaintext listing conversion error

From http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Malone_%28New_York%29&diff=2348318&oldid=2325040 on 21:55, 20 July 2013 by Wrh2Bot:

Not sure if this is still happening or if the info is useful to you for script debugging? K7L (talk) 17:42, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

At this point there is no plan to re-run the script, but at best instances like the one you've raised probably only could have been handled by skipping the conversion for addresses where a number was preceded by another number - the variety of address patterns is just too broad. It was understood that there would be some errors since it's impossible to convert everything exactly right (Wikivoyage:Script nominations#Text-to-template Conversion), but the mistakes should be rare, manual conversion is also subject to the occasional error, and the benefit of having templated listings should hopefully outweigh the disadvantage of having a small handful of items needing correction. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:50, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The address was formatted incorrectly, so I don't think there's any way we could have expected it to convert correctly. When writing mixed fractions without the benefit of vertical fractions, the integral and fractional parts of the number should be separated with a hyphen, not a space: 39-1/2. [9] -- LtPowers (talk) 20:33, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Another listing conversion error

Hi Ryan, your bot added an errant "the" to the restaurant description of the Paragon restaurant in Katoomba, so it said "The. Lovely food and friendly staff." I guess it's because the "the" was outside the bold in the plaintext listing. I don't know if this mistake would have occurred anywhere else, but I thought I'd let you know anyway. Graham87 (talk) 10:11, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know - if we ever need to re-run the bot then that might be something that could be corrected, but it's tough to catch every possible variation, particularly when the listing had non-standard formatting. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:48, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Templates for the main page

Trying to get these templates up and running to create a mockup for the main page. Wondering if you can help? They are amazingly complicated. Have the concept here [10] Travel Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 16:05, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm at work and currently only editing between compiles, so unfortunately I don't have much time to help. However, if you're just using these templates as a test for a demo page I'd suggest not using templates and simply hard-coding HTML for now as it would probably be easier to set up a quick demo that way, and it will save us the hassle of having to delete templates if this approach isn't used. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:13, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Plain listing conversion tool

Hi, I've read around that you have develop the tool in the subject. Do you think that it's enough mature to be "tried" in it:voy too? --Andyrom75 (talk) 12:36, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be hesitant to use that bot in other languages - I had to do several week's testing to get it working well with English, and suspect it would generate a lot of incorrect conversions in other languages. You might want to see if Wikivoyage:Listings#Tools could be modified for use on it: - it generated too many false positives to deploy widely on English Wikivoyage, but with fewer total articles it might work on other language versions. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:25, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I'll wait when you would have finished all your test here in en:voy. After that we could try to make some test on it:voy. I think the data structure should be the same, but clearly we'll know only trying. --Andyrom75 (talk) 17:09, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The bot already ran here on en:. The problem with using it for other language versions is that it's doing text-parsing, so it is language-specific and probably will not work well for any wiki besides en:. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:17, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there's so much difference between the various language, at the end it's just a way of writing plain text. Could you make a try on it:Prato? It's a new page that I've just readapt from WT and I've seen that the content it's almost identical to Prato. I suppose that the result would be the same.
I take the chance to ask you if you can go on Wikivoyage:Script nominations to analyze my nomination, I'd like to finish an easy job here on en:voy. --Andyrom75 (talk) 08:57, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm leaving for vacation starting tonight so may not have internet access, but if I do I'll do a test. I've added a support vote for your bot. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:23, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't expect too much without adapting the bot to Italian. I assume the bot probably has some heuristics such that, for example, it uses words like "St." and "Ave." to help it figure out which part is the address. The bot won't know what to do with words like "piazza" and "via" so it may just treat them like text blocks of description. Also, the bot won't know the word "telefono", so it will likely leave the word in there somewhere instead of removing it, and may put it in a different field as well. Texugo (talk) 14:37, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's correct. Unless the address, phone, fax, etc. is formatted in the same way as on en: it won't convert the listing, or worse will incorrectly convert it. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:51, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the heuristic part of the bot mentioned by Texugo, I can help with translations; just ask if needed. Maybe when you get back from your vacation we can try to tune it together. I can select a small amount of pilot pages, you'll launch the bot on them, and then I'll check if the Italian result is ok or if something has gone wrong. Then we'll evaluate if there's a minimum chance to use it on another group of articles or if it's better to give up. PS Thanks for the support :-) --Andyrom75 (talk) 18:51, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, I am very interested in trying to work out a Portuguese version of this as well. If you could give us an outline of what words/word lists need translation, Andyrom75 and I could both get to work on it. When you have time, of course! Texugo (talk) 19:15, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The bot was written in Java, so it combined pattern matching with additional processing, but here are the basic patterns that were used:
	EXPR_ADDRESS1 = "([\\d]+([/\\-][\\d]+)? ([nesw]\\.? )?([\\p{L}\\d][\\p{L}\\d][\\p{L}\\d \\.]{0,50}?) (avenue|ave|av|boulevard|blvd|court|ct|drive|dr|expressway|expwy|freeway|fwy|highway( \\d{1,3})?|hwy( \\d{1,3})?|lane|ln|parkway|pkwy|place|pl|road|rd|row|street|st|way)(\\.? (#(\\s)*[\\d]+|north|ne|nw|n|east|e|south|se|sw|s|west|w))?)[\\. , ]";
	EXPR_ADDRESS2 = "(avenida|ave|av|calle|estrada|est|rua)(\\.)? ([\\p{L}\\d][\\p{L}\\d][\\p{L}\\d \\.]{0,50}?), [\\d]+([/\\-][\\d]+)?";
	EXPR_ALT_NAME = "(\\(''|''\\(|\\()([^\\)]+?)(''\\)|\\)''|\\))";
	EXPR_BOLD_NAME = "'''(.+?)'''";
	EXPR_DIRECTIONS = "(\\(''|''\\(|\\()([^\\)]+?)(''\\)|\\)''|\\))";
	EXPR_EMAIL = "(mailto:)?([\\p{L}\\d\\.\\-_]+@[\\p{L}\\d\\-_]+.[\\p{L}\\d\\.\\-_]+)";
	EXPR_EMPTY_BRACKETS = "\\[[^\\p{L}\\d]*?\\]";
	EXPR_EMPTY_PARENTHESES = "\\([^\\p{L}\\d]*?\\)";
	EXPR_PHONE = "(('')?(\\()?(\\+)?(\\()?((\\d|\\(|\\)|')[\\- /]?){5,}\\d( ext\\.? \\d+)?)";
	EXPR_FAX = "(\\(''|''\\(|\\()?fax(:)?(\\s)*" + EXPR_PHONE + "(''\\)|\\)''|\\))?";
	EXPR_NAME_AND_URL = "\\[(http[^\\] ]+)(\\s)+([^\\]]+)\\]";
	EXPR_PHONE_WITH_LABEL = "(\\(''|''\\(|\\()?(telephone:|telephone|tel:|tel\\.:|tel\\.|tel|phone:|phone|ph:|ph\\.:|ph\\.|ph|\\u260E)(\\s)*" + EXPR_PHONE + "(''\\)|\\)''|\\))?";;
	EXPR_TOLLFREE = "(\\(''|''\\(|\\()?(toll[ \\-]?free)(:)?(\\s)*" + EXPR_PHONE + "(''\\)|\\)''|\\))?";;
	EXPR_URL = "http[^\\] ]+";
	EXPR_URL_WITH_TEXT = "\\[(\\s)*" + EXPR_URL + "(\\s)+[^\\]]+\\]";
Just to set expectations correctly, I'm happy to share code or run a test, but it was a huge amount of work to get this bot to a point where I was confident of running it against all articles on en:, and while I would love to help, I'm unlikely to devote hours of work to getting it to a point where it is similarly useful for other languages. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:22, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can easily understand you concern. If you agree we can try to give a general fix to the current code and then me and Texugo would try to find in our respective community someone that could run it (personally I can't install anything on my laptop ... it's not "properly" mine ;-))
I've tried to make a change on what I've understood that should be translated. According to the current functionality, the criteria is "equal to" or "begin with", I mean, should I insert both "via" and "viale" or just "via"?
            EXPR_ADDRESS1 = "([\\d]+([/\\-][\\d]+)? ([neso]\\.? )?([\\p{L}\\d][\\p{L}\\d][\\p{L}\\d \\.]{0,50}?) (viale|via|strada|vicolo|superstrada|autostrada|ss|piazza|piazzale)(\\.? (#(\\s)*[\\d]+|nord|ne|no|n|est|e|sud|se|so|s|ovest|o))?)[\\. , ]";
            EXPR_PHONE = "(('')?(\\()?(\\+)?(\\()?((\\d|\\(|\\)|')[\\- /]?){5,}\\d( (ext|est)\\.? \\d+)?)";
            EXPR_PHONE_WITH_LABEL = "(\\(''|''\\(|\\()?(telefono:|telefono|tel:|tel\\.:|tel\\.|tel|\\u260E)(\\s)*" + EXPR_PHONE + "(''\\)|\\)''|\\))?";;
            EXPR_TOLLFREE = "(\\(''|''\\(|\\()?(numero[ \\-]?verde)(:)?(\\s)*" + EXPR_PHONE + "(''\\)|\\)''|\\))?";;
Let me know when you'll be ready and we can try few tests (just few don't worry ;-)) --Andyrom75 (talk) 13:22, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ryan, you put a merge template at Sixteen days in Götaland and Svealand a long time ago. Image as a link in mobile view

Hey Ryan, Nick and I are stumped by some images not scaling on the mobile site and I was wondering if you had any thoughts on why the normal site and the mobile site would display the same code differently. I have an example set up here. The top image links to its file page while the bottom image links to the Tourist Office. They're both wrapped in a div that forces the image to scale to the size of the screen if the image is bigger than the screen. The scaling works on the normal website but on the mobile site, the bottom image (that links to a page other than its file page) does not scale. Looking at the source code, it looks like the Mediawiki software adds an image class to the top image but not to the image that links to the Tourist Office. However, it does this for both the normal site and the mobile site (and the CSS doesn't rely on the image class anyway), so I'm perplexed. Any thoughts on why this happens? Thanks! -Shaundd (talk) 19:09, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for looking into this, both of you! :) --Nick talk 21:54, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Try it now - the CSS that mobile seems to want to allow resizing is:
img.tex, .image img, .thumb img {
  max-width: 100% !important;
  height: auto !important;
}
I added a <div class="image">...</div> around your image to get that rule to fire, although I'm not sure if doing so will have any unwanted side-effects. -- Ryan • (talk) • 05:05, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, thanks! Hopefully there aren't any side-effects. -Shaundd (talk) 15:18, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much, both of you!! --Nick talk 15:32, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for helping

I'm not reading anything else posted by Tony1 tonight, which I think is wise.

All the best,

Strange revert removing a full stop

I'm afraid your edit summary gave no clue as to why you made this revert to remove the full stop (or period) at the end of a sentence and before the capitalised start of the next sentence. Was this just a weird mistake? --W. Frankemailtalk 15:40, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'd appreciate a response when you get a moment. --W. Frankemailtalk 01:30, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My assumption is that if you saw the rollback in question then you also saw the edit that followed it less than 30 seconds later: [11]. -- Ryan • (talk) • 01:45, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, I've got notifications enabled, so I was alerted to your revert while I was editing another article, went immediately to take a look at the revert in question (and, in doing so, cleared the Japan article from my watchlist update) and then, later, made this query here. :::Sorry not to have noticed your entirely explanatory edit summary and to have bothered you, Sir, and thanks for clarifying that this was indeed an inadvertent mistake. --W. Frankemailtalk 14:44, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Greenport

I've been cleaning up the North Fork article to some degree and had put two "cities" in it, Riverhead (which has an article) and Greenport (which was not). Someone created the page as an empty outline, and you deleted it. While I intend to create a Greenport page with content at some point, I was wondering--did you delete this merely because it was empty content, or was it because of the page creation vandalism you've been dealing with (as I saw here)? Rastapopulous (talk) 18:53, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Go ahead and recreate it - I deleted it because the editing pattern of the user who created that article exactly matches the behavior of the page creation vandal(s) we've been dealing with for many years. Losing an article with nothing more than a skeleton template isn't much of a loss, and is easy enough to recreate should someone want to create a real article with content in it. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:11, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I figured it had in some sense, more to do with who created it than the fact that it was a skeleton. Just wanted to check. Rastapopulous (talk) 19:18, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What can I work on?

User box templates

Aloha! Regarding User boxes, users should have the ability to identify where they are living or where they come from. The User box templates are identical in name to what is in Wikipedia. For an example as to what they are supposed to look like can be found on my Wikipedia user page: w:User:Peaceray.

I think that the experimental warning template should be place in the /doc page for these templates. Right now that warning is totally wrecking the display of the templates, which means functioning templates have been rendered unusable by the warning.

One item that I realized that I need to fix is changes to the names of Categories. I think that any Category on these templates that starts with Wikipedian should be changed to Wikivoyager. What do you think?

Mahalo, Peaceray Peaceray (talk) 21:59, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All of the experimental tags are now in noinclude blocks, so they should not have any effect on template display. You may want to start a discussion about use of userboxes in the Pub so that more people can comment - I am personally not opposed to userboxes, but others have objected in the past to their use here. In the mean time, Wikivoyage:Quick contribution guide has some options for making simple contributions - our coverage of Hawaii is strangely lacking (I've personally done some work on the Kauai article, but far more is needed), so your insights would be much appreciated! -- Ryan • (talk) • 22:12, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Personal information

I could not believe my eyes when I read contributions at signpost discussion revealing your personal information so maliciously!

Btw, is this the relevant rule? w:WP:DOX: Posting another editor's personal information is harassment, unless that person had voluntarily posted his or her own information, or links to such information, on Wikipedia. Personal information includes legal name... Specifically, the person had voluntarily posted... and wikipedia. When it refers to wikipedia, does it automatically mean wikimedia? By my understanding, if you didn't personally post your data on wikipedia, I guess you could still ask for it to be oversighted or complain of harassment. I mean, if it matters to you ;) Danapit (talk) 10:16, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if you've made it clear that you don't want to be referred to a certain way, and people keep referring to you that way, it is considered harassment. That is true whether or not you have voluntarily posted your information online. (The proper place would be w:en:WP:ANI - honestly, he's said many thing that could probably be looked at by uninvolved admins). --Rschen7754 10:33, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This incident may cause me to revise both my opinion of and any future interaction with Tony. Does he have form for this kind of unacceptable behaviour or was everything discussed here "on-wiki" before his ban proposal? --118.93.67.66 15:38, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand what you are asking, but he is currently blocked on the French Wikipedia, and has been blocked before on the English Wikinews and English Wikipedia. --Rschen7754 15:50, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Danapit - due to the WT lawsuit much of my personal information is already a matter of public record, and I accept that it's important for people on WMF projects to know my real name so that they can identify me as the same person who the WMF helped defend during that lawsuit. My primary concern with the Signpost discussions were 1) use of my full name in those discussions was unnecessary given the context, and 2) a Signpost article is going to rank highly in search results, so using my full name alongside disputed accusations of bullying and erroneous accusations about prostitution is likely to cause unnecessary headaches for me in the future. Since my real name is a well-known fact I accept that others have a right to use it, but I would also like to have the right to edit that usage when appropriate. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:49, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That seems a fair and nuanced balance.
Does Tony have form for this kind of unacceptable behaviour? Was everything discussed here "on-wiki" before his ban proposal or did some of the ban discussions take place "off-wiki"? --118.93.67.66 16:03, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Further discussion moved to Wikivoyage talk:User ban nominations#Tony1. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:28, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What do I do next at El Camino Real?

I just finished all 21 missions at El Camino Real (4 received entries for the first time, and all 21 entries were improved in some manner). What do I do now to make it a proper itinerary? I have the beginnings of a seven-day itinerary (three missions a day) on the talk page...are there other things I should do? Purplebackpack89 19:39, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've responded at Talk:El Camino Real#Suggest a seven-day itinerary. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:51, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

red link cleanup

Ryan, just for completeness of removing Pages with broken file links do you still need the pages User:Wrh2/Broken Files and User:Wrh2/Sandbox with red linked images? --Traveler100 (talk) 11:31, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've deleted the first and blanked the second. Thanks for pinging me about this. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:51, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Requested migration

Wikivoyage_talk:User_account_migration#Request_for_Rename_.22.28WT-en.29_Koavf.22_.3E_.22Koavf.22 I'm requesting on the talk page of User talk:wrh2 and User talk:LtPowers because you both seem pretty active on user page migrations. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:05, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Sorry for bugging you and LtPowers. I didn't realize that the migration thing was an option until a few days back. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:35, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help for ro:voy listings

Hi Ryan, Thanks for volunteering to help with the transition on ro.voy. The templates in Romanian are: Intrare=Listing, "De vizitat"=See, "de făcut"=Do, Restaurant=Eat, Magazin=Buy, Bar=Drink, Cazare=Sleep.

The parameters of the templates are:

{{Listing
|tip=type
|nume=name
|alt=alt
|latitudine=lat
|longitudine=long
|url=url
|adresă=address
|indicații=directions
|telefon=phone
|fax=fax
|email=email
|orar=hours
|preț=price
|check-in=check-in
|check-out=check-out
|descriere= contents between tags
}}

There are only a few pages with tags (I found 2), but I want to make sure I don't miss any. There is no hurry, as tags work just fine so far. Just let me know, either here or at ro.voy when you get around to doing it. Thanks a lot.--Strainu (talk) 22:58, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've got a few items on my TODO list ahead of this one, but I wanted to let you know that I've seen the request. Next week is a holiday and I'll be leaving town on Wednesday, so if I haven't gotten to it by then then I'll need to do it the following week. -- Ryan • (talk) • 23:58, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Strainu: I tried to run some test edits tonight, but my account is being flagged for captcha validation. I can either wait a few days until the captcha validation is no longer required, or if you could give the bot flag to ro:User:Wrh2Bot then I'll try again. -- Ryan • (talk) • 05:15, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late response. I'm not a bureaucrat, so I can't give you bot rights. By now, the catcha should be lifted. Can you try again? Thanks.--Strainu (talk) 20:39, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Spambot?

I really hope that this was a case of mistaken identity. Or a misclick on your part. I've unblocked Doc James, but please reblock if I've missed something vital here. LtPowers (talk) 02:24, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for correcting that embarrassing mistake. It looks like I was attempting to block a spambot (User:Swapnilkale72) but clicked on the link immediately below it in the article history [12]. Apologies to User:Jmh649 for an embarrassing error that I should have caught as soon as I got to the block page. -- Ryan • (talk) • 02:30, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I had made the same deduction, but I didn't block the spambot because it was already globally locked. =) I'm sure Doc James will understand. LtPowers (talk) 21:25, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I have even blocked myself before. I have a bunch of great photos from Nepal I have been meaning to getting around to uploading. But have been more active on Wikipedia than here. Travel Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 05:37, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re-attributing edits

Hello, I was wondering whether there's any possible way of changing the attribution of edits from my old "SUFCboy" account to this current global one? I've previously put in a request at Wikivoyage:User account migration but it seems that is primarily for migrating WT accounts. The user contributions for SUFCboy show that I'm the owner for both.

Thank you, and Merry Christmas! -- Half past (formerly 'SUFCboy') 17:36, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a definite answer, so you might want to ask in the Pub - if you want to merge your old account into the new account there may be a way to do that globally (for example: [13]). As you've noted, the current "migration" tool is used only for merging old WT contributions with a verified Wikimedia account. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:41, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
