IRC via the web

[edit]

Does anyone have a web link to the freenode Wikivoyage channel? -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 17:05, 14 Feb 2006 (EST)

Do you mean like irc://irc.freenode.net/#wikivoyage ? --(WT-en) Evan 17:11, 14 Feb 2006 (EST)
No, I'm looking for something that can be used behind a corporate firewall, like http://webchat.xs4all.nl/cgi-bin/ircnet/irc.cgi but for freenode #Wikivoyage. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 17:20, 14 Feb 2006 (EST)
Maybe this will answer your question: http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#webchat - there is no "official" webchat interface but it seems possible to connect to freenode IRC using a web browser. (WT-en) Ricardo (Rmx) 15:37, 25 April 2006 (EDT)

Wikivoyage on IRC

[edit]

Swept in from the Pub:

Is this used much? The link given on the help page didn't work in my browser. I haven't used mIRC in about 7 years, but I downloaded it in the hopes of getting some quick answers to easy questions. (Instead of asking in my edit summaries :)). When I got to #wikivoyage I was all alone. Sup? (WT-en) OldPine 11:16, 16 June 2006 (EDT)

Bah... was on the wrong server. My bad. (WT-en) OldPine 11:22, 16 June 2006 (EDT)

VFD Discussion

[edit]
  • Delete. Unless I'm mistaken this IRC channel is completely unused, so the page referencing it is misleading. -- (WT-en) Ryan (talk) 18:47, 9 August 2010 (EDT)
    • Keep. I'd rather not leave redlinks in old discussions that pointed to this. We can mark it as inactive. (WT-en) LtPowers 18:52, 9 August 2010 (EDT)
      • I'm OK with keeping it if needed, but there are only five links to that page, not counting the VFD, which could be cleaned up fairly easily. -- (WT-en) Ryan (talk) 19:37, 11 August 2010 (EDT)
        • Well, it's also nice to have it around in case anyone wants to start it up again. (WT-en) LtPowers 20:52, 11 August 2010 (EDT)

Result: Kept. -- (WT-en) Ryan (talk) 19:41, 23 August 2010 (EDT)

Chat room

[edit]

Swept from the pub:

What you guys think should we have a chat room? can be on IRC or any.. It can be used in very useful manner, we can discuss on an article when two or more editors are involved in editing an article and many other little things related to WV, that we sometime hesitate to post on talk pages.. Also can have a little social chit chat amongst the peoples who are here. --Saqib (talk) 18:00, 4 October 2012 (CEST)

Love the idea. I find that permanently etching the ephemera of chat onto talk pages rather obfuscates proceedings.(WV-en) Travelpleb (talk) 18:25, 4 October 2012 (CEST)
You're not wrong! --W. Franke-mailtalk 20:27, 4 October 2012 (CEST)
Social chat's fine, but discussing article or policy work on IRC tends to lead to "Well we discussed that on IRC, and here's what we decided," which leaves no record on-wiki and leaves people who weren't on chat in the dark. LtPowers (talk) 20:51, 4 October 2012 (CEST)
I agree fully with LtPowers--decisions and the processes by which we make them need to have a public record. Nothing wrong with chatting about our project, though, be it on IRC, in emails, or ideally over dinner or beer. --Peter Talk 22:33, 4 October 2012 (CEST)
Didn't we used to have a Wikitravel IRC? JamesA >talk 03:06, 5 October 2012 (CEST)
Not to derail this discussion, but we are starting afresh with the list of X-ers who live in Y list, right (I'm thinking about dinner and beer)? I'll get on that now. --Peter Talk 04:39, 5 October 2012 (CEST)
(IRC) channel #wikivoyage and #wikivoyage-en both already registered. See here. --Saqib (talk) 14:51, 7 October 2012 (CEST)

Wikivoyage:IRC

[edit]
Swept in from the pub

Just reminding people that we have an IRC channel! I'd encourage some of the regulars to use it - there have been people joining the channel expecting to find people who have been around a while and get advice, or to inform the project of something, and have been disappointed as there's nobody else there. If you need help connecting or have any questions, let me know! --Rschen7754 19:01, 25 February 2013 (UTC)`Reply

How about an on-line meetup between the active Wikivoyagers? --Saqib (talk) 20:17, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Andrew: I encourage you to setup a meeting on IRC once a month where we can join you and discuss the potential featured articles. YPSI: What do you think? --Saqib (talk) 19:23, 12 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Not sure...I think the usual place works well. ϒpsilon (talk) 19:41, 12 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes. It would be better for discussions like that to take place onwiki so that folks who don't use IRC (like me) can still participate. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 20:59, 12 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
