Is the (Eastern) qualifier really necessary?

[edit]

The article states that Eastern Armenian is the official dialect, and the only dialect spoken within Armenia itself. The Western dialect is spoken by the Armenian diaspora, presumably in countries where it is an unofficial/minority language and thus not strictly necessary for travellers to learn. The parenthetical disambiguator makes the article title awkward. I propose this page be renamed to simply "Armenian phrasebook". -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 01:03, 8 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Western and Eastern Armenian dialects - 1909
Complicated .. reading Wikipedia it seems Western Armenian is called that not because it is spoken by the diaspora in the West, but because it was the dialect spoken in what was then 'Western Armenia' before the genocide.
I'd say it is OK to remove the word 'Eastern' from the title, whilst keeping the explanations of 'Eastern Armenia' in the article itself. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 01:39, 8 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Me too. I think this is analogue with Saami phrasebook, which is about Northern Sami, the most common of the Sami languages. We will probably never have a phrasebook for Western Armenian, and if we will, we can change title then. We should be clear about the distinction in the lead, but handling it in the title is not necessary.--LPfi (talk) 11:32, 8 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Support for shortening the name. ϒpsilon (talk) 21:30, 11 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
As far as I'm aware, the differences between the Armenian dialects are limited to some regular sound changes (such as t → d and k → g) and they are mutually intelligible with each other, so I support renaming this to Armenian phrasebook. That this phrasebook is based on the eastern dialect is already mentioned clearly in the introduction. Vidimian (talk) 10:00, 12 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes, simplify the title; we need only one phrasebook for the language. Leave it to Armenian speakers to decide to what extent, if any, dialect differences need to be dealt with.
There is a substantial Armenian community in Isfahan; one of the Shahs a few centuries back moved them to his capital, I think to reduce the chance of them making trouble on his borders. What dialect do they speak? Are there clumps of Armenians elsewhere? Pashley (talk) 04:51, 17 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Expanding the phrasebook

[edit]

I translated it in Italian but many phrases present in Italian template are absent here: if someone here speaks Armenian I can help translating to English some phrases part of the Italian template and he/she can attach the translation in Armenian (that, in case, I will copy in Italin phrasebook). --Gce (talk) 22:26, 9 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
