Re-directing Horwich[edit]

In spring 2020, discussion is under way on merging / re-directing several small towns in Greater Manchester: see Manchester talk page for summary.

For Horwich, the suggestion is to merge it into Bolton - it is part of that borough. The original town has eating and drinking places but no accommodation and not much to see or do. Three miles south (yet without direct public transport) is the Middlebrook retail and leisure park: Bolton Wanderers are the anchor development here, tho heading rapidly to the sea bed. There's a cluster of hotels, a cinema and bowling alley. My impression is there'd be no gain to the reader or prospective visitor by merger or other reorganisation so I now propose leaving it status quo. Any other views? I'd feel comfortable seeing this merged into Bolton. There's very little here, and a rubbish football club and retail park (with Old Trafford and the Trafford Centre just down the road) don't change that. Though I would say that I don't know the area, so might not be doing it justice.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 21:47, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was in two minds about this. Not to guess the outcome of coronavirus, but the siege can have only one effect on a destination that was already marginal for retention. So I've migrated content (including the above comments on Horwich / Talk) to Bolton and will redirect. Grahamsands (talk) 14:41, 30 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bolton[edit]

Swept in from the pub

Can an admin have a look at Bolton/Bolton (England) and Talk:Bolton/Talk:Bolton (England) please.

The deleted edit history of "Bolton (England)" should be merged to "Bolton" and the edit history of "Bolton" prior to the cut and paste move should be moved to "Bolton (disambiguation)".
Talk:Bolton (England) only has discussions in 2013 and earlier. I have added a link to Talk:Bolton, so the old page can work as an archive. AlasdairW (talk) 14:11, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am now fixing the history etc. Will report when ready. –LPfi (talk) 16:34, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I did not touch the talk pages. –LPfi (talk) 17:11, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks but shouldn't the talk pages be history merged as well? The comments from 2011 can easily be history merged with the content from 2020 (which came from another talk page but is OK there). @LPfi, AlasdairW: I think a history merge of the talk pages would be simpler and less confusing than the link to the old talk especially now that the articles have been history merged. Maybe, I'm not sure. I thought about moving the old talk page to Talk:Bolton/Archive, with redirect either there or to Talk:Bolton, but I find the current arrangement acceptable, and new arrangements can be made at any time without regard to the move of mainspace page histories that I performed. Some people archive their talk pages by moving and recreating them, which resembles the current arrangement. While I don't find that ideal, a history merge may be more confusing than just having the old talk page separate. Some care and some extra steps are needed if the history merge is performed. –LPfi (talk) 12:30, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
