I moved NE Illinois to Chicagoland. I'm not sure the list of counties is still applicable, though. If someone with more smarts about IL than me could move ones that are inappropriate to Northern Illinois or Central Illinois, it'd be great. --(WT-en) Evan 07:49, 19 Jan 2005 (EST)

Hoo boy, Evan -- you really don't want people from downstate Illinois finding out that you did this, or you'll have contract assassins after you. :-) There is antipathy between city and downstate that makes lumping some of these counties into "Chicagoland" look very weird. Indiana too

I think it would definitely be appropriate to include Indiana's Lake county on this page too—places like East Chicago are definitely part of Chicagoland. Chicagoland's boundaries are pretty undefined--see the Wikipedia link on the page for some attempts to define them. The broadest conceptions of Chicagoland do include northwest Indiana, but given Wikivoyage's attempt to follow a geographic hierarchy in which states come before state regions, it would seem to make sense to use one of the Chicagoland conceptions that is restricted to Illinois counties. (Which counties those should be is also something to discuss.)

Maybe we could emphasize Lake Co. Indiana and Kenosha Co. in the "Get Out" section? (WT-en) Nareek 09:18, 22 August 2008 (EDT)

Agreed that the boundaries are undefined—and I really only know the areas bordering the South Side of the city, so I can't comment on Kenosha Co., but much of Lake Co. is solid Chicagoland. We've had some discussions (like this one) about whether we can list regions/cities as having more than one parent region, and I'm pretty sure we've decided in favor of doing so. (At least, no one has argued against doing so in a very long time.) For another example of how this can work, see Metro New York. I don't think it would be appropriate to link to a Chicagoland article on the Indiana or Northern Indiana pages (except for the "get out" sections)—that should just show Lake County. But I see no reason to not cross-list Lake County here.

Like I said, I can't comment intelligently beyond Lake Co., but I'd really like to have destinations like Whiting, East Chicago, and even Gary linked on this page. Some people consider Chicagoland to extend beyond Illinois, some people don't. If we take the former position, then we need to duplicate attractions on two different regional pages (because Lake Co. is certainly in Northern Indiana; if we take the latter, then we don't have that problem. I don't know why we'd want to create problems for ourselves.

Note that there is not Lake County (Indiana) page--individual counties rarely seem to have their own pages on Wikivoyage--which makes including just Lake Co. (or just Lake and Porter counties, as per another possible definition of Chicagoland) is slightly more problematic. (WT-en) Nareek 23:21, 24 August 2008 (EDT)

I'd disagree. Attractions generally should not be on regions pages at all—only links to them. There are exceptions, but I'm not sure Lake County would have any. I generally like to avoid creating problems too, like for example the problem of looking at the Chicago metropolitan area page, and not seeing a town linked named East Chicago  ;) Counties don't always warrant separate articles on Wikivoyage, but they often do (e.g., all of Maryland's counties have articles). Lake County is pretty radically different from the rest of Indiana, in fact because it is so integrated with Chicago, and I think it definitely does warrant an article of its own—I'd be happy to write a basic article for it. --(WT-en) Peter ^Talk 14:03, 25 August 2008 (EDT)

County Pages

I'd like to break this page down and separate the counties out. The counties are way too diverse to be included on this page, and it may be easier to do itineraries County-wide versus region wide. Any strong feelings either way? --Imegj (talk) 02:50, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Basically, I'm proposing that the Counties be treated as regions and given their own individual pages. The Chicagoland page would still have highlights of the greater region but the counties would have more detailed attractions, etc. Imegj (talk) 04:14, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

I think that would make sense. This page has been a little bit of a mess. We'd need to move the various cities lists out to the county pages, and then add some general, overview prose to the sections here on what to see, do, eat, etc. so readers can find the right next article to read. Thinking of going more regional than the Counties. The more I think through regions in Chicagoland, the more it makes sense to go that way. North Shore, Chain O Lakes, Fox River Valley, etc. I'll give it a try.Imegj (talk) 04:03, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

McHenry County

I'm thinking it makes sense to push McHenry County into the Chicagoland region. The vast majority of the population of that County is definitely within Chicagoland land, though I'd concede many western portions of the County are closer to Rockford.Imegj (talk) 02:50, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned sub-region

FYI, there are quite a few articles that link to Inner Suburbs (Illinois) in their breadcrumb trails, even though that article is no longer being used as part of our Chicagoland sub-region breakdown. Eco84 (talk) 00:11, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
