So much more famous?

I'm not convinced this town of 12,000 odd, meets the so much more famous rule for disamb. WP has a disamb for Newtown. --(WT-en) inas 20:36, 5 August 2009 (EDT)

I'd agree. My first guess would've been the one in Pennsylvania, not Wales. - (WT-en) Dguillaime 22:12, 5 August 2009 (EDT)
I'd never heard of the one in Pennsylvania before it was added to the Newtown disamb page. I guess it depends on what part of the World you have more knowledge of. I wouldn't be against moving this page to Newtown_(Wales) and redirecting Newtown to Newtown_(disambiguation) though. (WT-en) Tarr3n 07:54, 10 August 2009 (EDT)
I think for historical reasons the Newtown, Wales should be the primary article. I am Welsh, therefore possibly biased. 07:24, 3 May 2011 (EDT)
I agree DAB should be here, as noted some (like Connecticut) are larger and the name is very common. I am English so globally not that far from Newtown but I agree it isn't primary. Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:17, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. When none of the destinations with the name are large and/or important, it's best to use a disambiguation page to be fair. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 12:26, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't think this one can even claim on historic importance for a term this generic, note for example Newport is a DAB even though the one in Gwent is around 5x as large as the next largest. Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:28, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) Indeed. Newtown is one of the most common placenames in the world, and that's before the likes of Neustadt, Villeneuve and Vila Nova get a look in... However, if this gets redirected to Newtown (disambiguation), then we'll need to make sure all the articles which link here go where they should. --ThunderingTyphoons! The #1 reason page moves are rare...
Speaking of Newport, it probably would be done differently if not for the city in Rhode Island, which is the location of a famous jazz festival and movie about that event. I don't know much else about the place, but my guess judging from the film is that it's a popular travel destination with locals. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 12:33, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
There are only 8 mainspace links (ignoring the DAB page) so it wouldn't be a large job though all 8 from a glance all look correct. Note that there are a further 2 from the Newtown (Wales) redirect. Although there are a few others in Wales, only the Powys one appears to merit an article here so "Newtown (Wales)" would probably be sufficient. Also the base name should host the DAB its self, not redirect to Newtown (disambiguation) like Portland. Note that I'm not saying Newport should have a primary topic, I agree the DAB there should also be at the base name. But yes if the Rhode Island city didn't exist it might well be different. Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:41, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
But there was an incorrect link for Newtown (Pennsylvania) from Yardley that I just fixed. Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:50, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@ThunderingTyphoons!, SelfieCity: I think we have consensus to move this? Apart from 1 objection years ago that doesn't appear to be completely true anyway everyone else agrees and the guideline on "so much more famous" seems to agree. If one of you preform the move then I'll fix the links. Unlike here we only have 7. Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:01, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes Done. I think I've fixed all the links too, but would appreciate someone else checking.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:33, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thankyou ThunderingTyphoons!, there are no incoming links to the DAB and all the links you fixed look correct. Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:36, 31 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@ThunderingTyphoons!: correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that generally the links with a disambiguator aren't usually piped on DAB pages, see Wikivoyage:Disambiguation pages#Format. If "Wales" is redundant then maybe the "Mid Wales" should be removed? Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:43, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Go ahead and change whatever you think needs changing.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:42, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, done. Crouch, Swale (talk) 09:56, 6 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
