So I changed the name from Popayán to Popayan. A Google search for Popayan shows that the equivalent English spelling for Popayán is Popayan. -- (WT-en) Huttite 05:41, 27 May 2004 (EDT)

Huh? Popayán gets 5x more hits than the accentless version. The place is called "Popayán" and that accent makes a difference in pronunciation, why willfully put it in the wrong place? The Google search results for Popayán are generally not in English, those for Popayan are generally in English and twice as numerous as English search results for Popayán. Further general discussion should be to Foreign-language names rather than outside.... -- (WT-en) Huttite 06:56, 28 May 2004 (EDT)

OK if I move this back? All the other Colombia articles use the basic Spanish diacritics, even Bogotá. A foreigner would mispronounce the name based on the spelling Popayan. Travelwriter1000 (talk) 18:43, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
