Overly inclusive?
[edit]Why does this include Haryana & Himachal Pradesh? I do not think either is part of the Punjab & want to delete both, plus cities in them, except Chandigarh. Pashley (talk) 04:10, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- Bump. Six weeks & no comment.
- Does anyone want to argue for keeping them? Or can I just go ahead & delete? Pashley (talk) 04:01, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- Look at w:Punjab:
- The geographical definition of the term "Punjab" has changed over time. In the 16th century Mughal Empire it referred to a relatively smaller area between the Indus and the Sutlej rivers.[10] In British India, until the Partition of India in 1947, the Punjab Province encompassed the present-day Indian states and union territories of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, and Delhi and the Pakistani regions of Punjab and Islamabad Capital Territory.
- My question would be: What does it encompass today? I could definitely see an argument for Chandigarh, but not Delhi, and Haryana and Himachal Pradesh seem doubtful. However, I'd like to hear from someone more familiar with current thinking in Indian and/or Pakistan before we change this. User:Rangan Datta Wiki? User:Ravikiran r? User:DaGizza? Anyone else? - I went ahead & edited. Comment solicited. Pashley (talk) 05:54, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are part of the historical, "greater" Punjab though not its core. I would include them as parts that were formerly part of the region. To get more technical, a few western district of both Haryana and Himachal Pradesh have a Punjabi-speaking majority too. In terms of the five rivers after with Punjab is named, none of them flow through Haryana but some of them do go through Himachal. I think some people viewing this page would be looking for Haryana and Himachal Pradesh so I would err on the side of being inclusive rather than exclusive. Gizza (roam) 10:00, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- This is pretty controversial, the same thing also happens also with West Bengal. But I would suggest to keep Himachal and Harayana out of the combined Punjab. Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 12:29, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- We could compromise by stating that those states were part of Punjab at one time and linking them in that section, but not as regions of current-day Punjab. Does that work? Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:21, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
