Talk:South East Queensland
Cleanup
[edit]There are a lot of problems with this region and structure. It is probably an obvious side affect of a massive state having most of its population in the very south east corner.
That said, there are many regions and towns defined, and often many towns are defined separately outside their region. Therefore this needs more of a root and branch fix.
I'd like to keep Sunshine_Coast_(Queensland) and Brisbane as a separate sub regions along the coast, but look at putting all inland regions together in one article. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 22:18, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
- Ultimately the Sunshine coast, although a logical grouping for these towns, didn't have much specific content. I merged back up to here for now.
- Now all towns really fall under Australia->Queensland->South East Queensland which is a usable hierarchy for travellers. We could sub-divide again if content grows significantly. Andrewssi2 (talk) 21:13, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

Why do we not have a Sunshine Coast article?
[edit]I have always wondered why do we not have a Sunshine Coast article. It's a major tourist spot and it's the second biggest tourist spot in southern Queensland, just after Gold Coast. I propose we create a huge city article and then treat all the existing articles about the suburbs as districts as ttcf. That being said, I don't know too much about the Sunshine Coast, but I'm sure we can utilize the random trivial facts given by the one Australian user who we all know... Comments? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 11:03, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
- After a recent trip to the Sunshine Coast, I think what is most beneficial for the traveller is if we merge all of the articles under the Sunshine Coast (boundaries on map) and then make it into a rural area article. While these places definitely have their own identity, ultimately, the one reason why many visit these towns is for the beaches. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 01:02, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
- I started a draft on User:SHB2000/Sunshine Coast. Hopefully I'll finish it soon. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:38, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
Split?
[edit]There are quite a lot of articles under this region, and I propose to regionalise this article with the map of the regions on the right. In summary, only three new articles will need to be created, one of which is in my userspace, and the other two easily done. We might need a fourth one though (Gold Coast Hinterland), but that should be a region breadcrumbed under Gold Coast. Any other comments before I do such in the next few days? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:45, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- Also, can rural areas be breadcrumbed underneath huge cities? I would like to create South Stradbroke Island which is to be breadcrumbed underneath the Gold Coast. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 13:37, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
Banner
[edit]While the current banner is certainly nice, Moogerah Peaks is not representative of the region, and not a single bit. I'd also like to use that banner on Scenic Rim, which I will be creating soon. But by far, beaches and the seaside are the biggest draw to this region, by both domestic and international visitors and here's four banners by the beach and one that has some skylines and beaches. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:09, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- As the cropper, my favourite is 2, followed by 5, 4,
3and then 1 (as there's no beach) --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:09, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- For reference, another reason why I like 5 is because we have few banners of skylines by the beach, and this is something that is very iconic of this region (and this cannot be found anywhere else in Aus.). --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:17, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- 3 is too small to consider. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:40, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- Have struck 3 per your comment. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:44, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- 5 looks best to me, with 1 a distant second. I don't know how to judge 2: are the waves too big? If they're fine, that could be 2nd, with 1 3rd. 4 could be any beach, so not really suitable and not preferable to 0, which even if not representative has character and a sense of place. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:46, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- re the waves: when I was at Surfers Paradise a week and a half ago, the waves weren't this rough, but they were when I was at Broadbeach, which was good for surfing. Unfortunately, I don't know where this was taken, but it looks like it was in Broadbeach but I'm not entirely certain – you also get a similar view from Burleigh Heads a few kilometres further south, but I wasn't at the beach for long. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 10:03, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- A late reply, but banner 2 is taken in Nobbys Beach, Miami, which is a district of the Gold Coast that needs to be created, so two can find good use there. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 15:25, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- Done. Replaced the banner and used 1 on Scenic Rim. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 11:37, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Static map remarks
[edit]After two days of working on this static map, I've finally finished what could be said to be the best static map I've made so far. I do have a few remarks, though:
- Although the Cooroy to Curra Section D project is still under construction, it's opening next year. Based on that map, I just drew a straight line, but if a freely-licensed map is available, please do adjust the future motorway
- Tiaro Bypass is only in its planning stage, but construction is set to start soon; I've still marked it on the map, though.
- Although the same could be said for the Coomera Connector (construction is set to start on the new GC motorway next year), it's way too obvious. Additionally, due to the extensive media coverage when it opens, unlike Tiaro Bypass, it can be marked when it opens

The 200 km City: Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast
[edit]There was this old article that I recently stumbled upon. One of the key things identified in the article is how "three rapidly growing urban areas in Southeast Queensland have merged into a 200 km long [sic] city" (from Banora Pt, NSW, to Noosa Heads). While the article was written 14 years ago, it is true – SEQ is rapidly becoming a 200-kilometer stretch from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast and has a population comparable to that of Sydney or Melbourne without the outer outer suburbs.
So what does all of that have to do with Wikivoyage? One of the things that I found particularly prevalent was the lack of integration between articles – this was more prevalent before I made some major structural changes, emphasising the boundaries between Greater Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. That means treating this article a bit more like a city article that has districts beneath it and treating many of the more important attractions not mutually exclusive to one another. A bit more on transport could also be mentioned.
Anyway, that's all from me today – it's more like a suggestions list (which may eventually turn into my to-do list); other suggestions for integration would also be appreciated.
