Car park[edit]

I have a question of prefering car park (the British term) over parking lot (the American term). In Britian these places would be called Car parks, and signposted that way, so they should be called that in British articles too. Just as you would call it a parking lot in America because I would expect the sign to say that. -- (WT-en) Huttite 17:02, 6 Jan 2005 (EST)

Subdividing this page[edit]

I notice that Swansea is starting to become rather large. I have created a regional page, Gower Peninsula to move some attractions that are out of the city to, but contributors might like to also consider subdividing the city into districts such as Swansea/Gower and Swansea/Mumbles. -- (WT-en) Huttite 00:59, 23 Jul 2005 (EDT)

The current subdivision is rather clunky, with only one district. I think Gower Peninsula could be a separate district, or Swansea should be turned into multiple districts. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 12:56, 22 August 2011 (EDT)

I'm looking to create a district for the Swansea page for Swansea City Centre as there is a lot going on in this area which I think needs its own page due to the volume of shopping, eating, drinking and things to do within a mile or two radius. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Nat reynolds (talk) 11:44, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well if the city is to be districtified, it needs to be fully districitified; you can't just make one district article. LtPowers (talk) 14:33, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling[edit]

Hmmm... Lots of American spellings here "center", "theater" etc. This is about a British city so spelling and terminology should be British??? --204.104.55.242 09:31, 22 December 2006 (EST)

Hi - thanks for your comments. Please take a look at this page Project:Spelling. Hopefully, that will give you some insight into the reasons why American spelling is used even on articles for British cities. However, proper nouns are spelled according to local custom, for example in the Swansea article, you'll find "Grand Theatre" and "Dylan Thomas Centre" etc. Hope that answers your query. If you have any further comments regarding this policy, the best place to raise them is on Project:Spelling. Cheers. (WT-en) WindHorse 09:56, 22 December 2006 (EST)
...and note the "This policy is disputed" tag at the top of Project:Spelling which has been there for over a year... ~ 203.144.143.8 10:22, 22 December 2006 (EST)
True, but at the moment, all articles are spelled according to the US tradition. Basically, one style had to be adopted and as the founders were from that side of the pond that was the style decided upon. Without a standard policy, I think you'll appreciate that articles can be a mess. For the UK, it is easy to decide which style to use, but what about Japan or Siberia? From a personal prospective, I don't care which way we spell center/centre. If the UK model is chosen as a standard, I'm very happy to use that. Likewise, I'm equally happy to use the US or Australian styles. Anyway, as I said, if you want to re-start the debate on the issue, the place to do so is on this page: Project:Spelling. Furthermore, at Wikivoyage, all policies are decided by consensus, and I do not have the authority to grant a contributor the right to adopt in a particular writing style. All I can do is help point them in the direction of the pertinent info. Anyway, I hope this info is helpful, and if you decide to re-start the debate, I wish you well. Cheers. Removal of Sancta Maria Hospital[edit]

Would there be any objection to removing the reference to Sancta Maria?

It is a private hospital having limited facilities and tending to undertake pre-planned elective surgery and it's unlikely to be of use to a visitor to Swansea.

Singleton and Morriston Hosptial, (particularly the latter) are much better equiped NHS, (state owned hospitals) and would be more likely to be of use to a visitor to Swansea, and so it seems daft including this hospital in the same category.

Indeed on a similar point would it not be better to refer to the NHS direct telephone numbers or even the 999 number as a means of accessing healthcare in Swansea rather than the hospital switchboards- (those are more for businness or admin calls e.g. "I am calling from ABC office supplies about the invoice for printer ink required for the Hospitals' payroll department", rather than "My companion has turned blue/ orange/ has chest pains" sorts of calls. Although perhaps this is more a general point about accessing healthcare anywhere else in Wales or the UK for that matter.

That's sounds ok, though please consider that many travelers will be covered by medical insurance and so their decision where to seek medical attention will not be influenced by financial constraints. From what you state, emergencies would obviously be directed to the two larger hospitals, but travelers also seek treatment for non-urgent matters (such as minor eye or muscular problems), and some may prefer to go private rather than wait in line at a national health hospital. Anyway, please consider these points, but I'll leave the final decision in your very capable hands. (WT-en) WindHorse 12:07, 14 January 2007 (EST)

"first uphill water slide"[edit]

Currently on the front page of the site is a claim from this article that The LC's waterpark boasts the world's "first uphill water slide". This strikes me as a highly dubious claim, since the park only opened in 2008, but water coasters have been around for about a decade. Anyone have any evidence to support this claim? Guide or Usable?[edit]

I'm not convinced this article is a Guide, as long as it has 77(!) incorrectly formatted external links. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:34, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

tend to agree. Is on my to do list but could be some time before I have the chance to get round to it. --Traveler100 (talk) 11:09, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great. Does anyone demur on downgrading this article to Usable in the meantime? Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:24, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not for the links being wrongly formatted. Guide status is about content; formatting is an issue for Stars. Powers (talk) 15:51, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not true, sorry. I quote from Wikivoyage:City guide status:
| Guide
| [...]Listings and layout closely match the manual of style.[...]
|-
Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:10, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You know I even checked, but I missed that sentence. Still, I think it's fair to say that formatting doesn't have to be perfect, which is all I was trying to get across. For guide status, we ask that the travel content be essentially complete, but we tolerate some formatting issues. Powers (talk) 00:42, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We differ about how serious _77_ incorrect external links are. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:07, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Considering it was a relatively recent change to our MOS, and the incorrectness doesn't affect usability in any way, it seems silly to demote an article simply for not yet having been changed over. Powers (talk) 18:14, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, it's still Usable, just not a Guide. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:46, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly disagree. When we agreed to change the formatting for links, I don't believe we required every article to be immediately reformatted or face demotion, nor do I think we would have had much agreement on that point had anyone raised it. We don't even demote Stars just for still formatting links under the former standard. Powers (talk) 18:54, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ryan has helpfully edited the external links in the meantime, obviating this discussion, but I would merely observe that our definitions of "immediately" seem to differ. :-) Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:01, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that we have always granted leeway to articles that followed a previous standard so that no one felt compelled to have to change every article on the site to bring them all into compliance with a new standard. If you think there should be a time limit on such leeway, then that's a topic that should be raised in a more appropriate forum. Powers (talk) 18:17, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Which forum do you think is most appropriate for such a discussion? Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:49, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That would be Wikivoyage talk:City guide status or Wikivoyage talk:Guide articles. The former gets more traffic but the latter is more on-point. Powers (talk) 22:00, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wenglish[edit]

The expression 'Ych a fi!' doesn't translate as 'dirty', but rather as a general declaration of disgust. Further, it's by no means Wenglish (a pigdin mixture of Welsh and English words and phrases) but is rather wholly Welsh.

This is the free travel wiki which anyone can edit, so please plunge forward and make changes as you see appropriate. Croeso i Wikivoyage! --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:05, 5 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
