Simplified vs. traditional Chinese characters and the term "Mainland China"

Hi, User:Frankyang0611, and indeed welcome.

I speak only a little Mandarin and never knew more than about 100 characters, but I do know that simplified and traditional characters are in use. You didn't type an edit summary in the "Summary" box below your edit screen explaining why you made these edits. Did you eliminate some traditional characters? In the future, please type edit summaries any time it's not completely obvious why you made an edit.

Also, on "Mainland China" vs. "China": Yes, we treat Taiwan as a country on this site, in the interest of travelers, but Hong Kong is hardly independent in any way at this point. Granted that much of the Hong Kong SAR is geographically on the mainland; nevertheless, what clearer distinction could be made than by using the common term "Mainland China"? I don't think the term is controversial, and if it is controversial with a small number of supporters of independence for Taiwan or whatever, I don't much care, since it's clearer than any other expression I know to be in use. And then there's Macau, in which China hasn't cracked down yet. And with regard to traditional vs simplified characters, we follow local usage, so for articles about Singapore and mainland China, we used simplified characters, while in articles about Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, we use traditional characters. In the Chinese phrasebook, we just list both, since it's applicable to all Chinese-speaking areas. The dog2 (talk) 17:53, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
