Page banners

How can I change banners and resize images on Wikivoyage? [I was asked this excellent question on my talk page, and am posting it here so that others can see the response.] Ground Zero (talk) 16:48, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Answer

It's pretty simple:

  1. First you choose a picture from Wikimedia Commons (I chose the picture for Ife Ife from here.
  2. Then copy the file name into the croptool. Press "Open".
  3. Now you will be able to crop the picture. The simplest way is to choose "Aspect ratio", and "7.1". This gives you the correct ratio for Wikivoyage banner.
  4. Then you can select the part of the picture that you want to use.
  1. Select "Preview", and in that screen, select "Upload as new file", and change the file name to something like (in this case) "Ife Ife banner Obafemi Awolowo campus.jpg". Copy the file name to your clipboard.
  1. Select "Upload"
  2. In the Wikivoyage article, paste the new file name into the {{pagebanner | }} tag at the top of the article, after the "|", replacing "Pagebanner default.jpg" or "Africa", which may be there.

This is just a brief overview. More information is available at Wikivoyage:Banner Expedition. Ground Zero (talk) 16:50, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I took the freedom to change the name to comply with the suggested scheme at the banner expedition page: location + "banner" + description (which often is a single word), and to mention pre-existing text in the template. –LPfi (talk) 08:06, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Long lists

As Ikan Kekek mentioned this up on the talk page, we need to fix these up per Wikivoyage:Avoid long lists. Ikan has also mentioned that most of these have a little or no explanation often which don't help the traveller. Not sure what else to write here, apart from which articles they're written in. Starting a new page

So you want to start a new page, but how do you do it?

The first thing to do is consider whether your topic would get an article on Wikivoyage. See Wikivoyage:What is an article. Transportation centres other than huge, complicated airports (maybe the one for Lagos, but perhaps not and likely no other one in Nigeria) don't get their own article. Neither do individual attractions such as museums, houses of worship or urban parks, generally speaking. So what does get an article? Any city (town, village, etc.) that has enough in it of interest to a traveller for them to stay for a day or more, and also large parks that serve as destinations in themselves are examples of types of topics that get their own articles on Wikivoyage.

Your second step is to type the name of the destination you'd like to start an article for in the "Search Wikivoyage" box on the upper right - it may be that there is already an article about it. If there is not, you will get the result: 'Create the page "[Name of Page]" on this wiki!', in which the name you searched for is a red link.

Click that red link. You will see the following:

To start, please click on one of the following links to pre-fill this article with the standard sections:

City • City District • Region • National Park • Phrasebook • Huge airport • Dive site • Disambiguation • Redirect

If the destination is a city, town or village, click "City"; if it's a park, click "National Park" (it's fine if it's a state park, as long as it contains enough of interest for at least a day's stay).

Also note "Phrasebook": If any of you would like to start a phrasebook for any language you know that doesn't have one yet, click "Phrasebook" and add content accordingly. In each of these cases, you will be starting with an empty but standard article template for the type of article you want. So great, you have an outline! Edit accordingly and add content as appropriate and useful.

If you've already started an article and want to make sure it has a standard article template, go to Wikivoyage:Quick small city article template (or Wikivoyage:Quick park template, etc.), select all of the contents in grey below the page title, copy them and paste them onto the page where you are working.

Please let me know if any of what I've described could be clearer and if you have any questions about starting new pages or using article templates. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:02, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Also, if you want a quick outline small city or itinerary, just enter {{subst:smallcity}} or {{subst:itinerary}}. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 08:something, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
