Wikivoyage talk:Destination of the month
I threw this page up as a strawman; we usually link to Previous Destinations of the month when talking about DotM, but that's kind of wordy and indirect. It'd be nice to have a "home page" that describes the point of DotM, and let other pages be either archives, procedural, or whatever. Does the current roster of active Wikivoyagers include any long-distance cyclists?
[edit]- Swept in from the pub
Do we have any bikers among us? Namely, I've considered nominating tour cycling for FTT for some month next (Northern Hemisphere) summer. The article is right now at usable status, but it does look pretty extensive and therefore might be eligible for guide status (at least to someone who isn't that much into cycling). Does the article contain (basically) everything you need to know to go on a longer cycle tour, or is there still something important missing? ϒpsilon (talk) 12:00, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
- Karakoram Highway is fairly popular as an extremely challenging cycle route. Could we perhaps feature it instead or as well? Currently rated Outline, I'd say it is at least Usable & talk page has Talk:Karakoram_Highway#Guide_status. Pashley (talk) 20:31, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
- Sure we can feature Karakoram Highway at some point when that article is improved. Most headings under Go need a description, Go next is empty, and is there something that should go into the empty "History" section? --ϒpsilon (talk) 08:37, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
Proposal to stop changing DOTMs during the coronavirus crisis
[edit]As it stands, no-one is going to visit the DOTM or OTBP due to coronavirus. I propose that we wait until the coronavirus pandemic ceases (assuming it does) before adding new features so that the featured destinations will still get a chance to be visited. I've been hesitant to post this because one of the featured choices was my nomination, but given the current situation I think giving the destinations a chance is only sensible. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 17:28, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
- This came up already in the Pub, under the headings FTT and Following up on the issue of suspending DotM, which you possibly missed, because there were several similar threads running at once in the Pub. I don't mind continuing the conversation here, but it would be helpful if you addressed the points in favour of continuing featured articles for the duration made there. --ThunderingTyphoons! - Unless the DOTM is within walking distance (or an hour by train) of home, I am not going to visit when it is featured. Instead I may note this as a place to consider visiting in the next year or five. So we should keep feauring articles. However we should also be prepared to change the selection if there is something particular to that destination or topic which means that the article might have big changes if it had been written after travel generally resumes - e.g. events with large crowds may not restart for a lot longer. - @ThunderingTyphoons!: Thanks for explaining! Sorry I missed that discussion; until recently, I've been too busy and I've missed some discussions, it seems. I'll take a look and post there. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 15:00, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
- No worries, you can't be everywhere. And the idea of suspension does have merit.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:52, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
