So, I added an entry for the Project:Project to the navigation menu, since it would be nice to have it become a locus of project help, policy, and guidelines navigation. Wikimedia projects use the "portal" for that, but we've been using the portal slot for the "today's log" link, and I figured it would mess things up for other language versions to change that precipitously. I'm not crazy about the name ("Project Home") and we may want to change the title ("Main Page") to something more clearly about the travel guide ("Guide Home"?). But I just wanted to put those two slots on the shelf to start out. --(WT-en) Evan 17:37, 1 May 2006 (EDT)

[edit]

I'd like to put a link to the Wikivoyage RSS Feed in the sidebar... maybe even in a separate box below "navigation". Any objections? --(WT-en) Evan 20:55, 10 December 2006 (EST)

This is very cool. No objections here. (WT-en) Maj 21:11, 10 December 2006 (EST)
OK, I've added it. Any comments, please post them here. --(WT-en) Evan 15:13, 14 December 2006 (EST)

Why isn't this working?

[edit]

Why has "Donations", "Current Events" and "Community portal" appeared, while "Travellers' pub", " Wikivoyage Shared" and the "Feeds" option has disappeared? -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 15:32, 20 March 2007 (EDT)

Any objections to adding a link to Extra below Shared? (WT-en) Maj 11:06, 20 June 2007 (EDT)

Nope, I've added to the nav bar on de: a couple of months back and Riggwelter put it on Shared, although I had to fix a small problem with the way he did it. -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 11:21, 20 June 2007 (EDT)
I'd like to add on ja: if Extra is multilingual. Is it english only ? -- (WT-en) Tatata 12:12, 20 June 2007 (EDT)
The UI is currently only in English, but we'll be adding multilingual support later this summer. Content, however, is supported in all the Wikivoyage languages. So far we have some content in German, but I'd love to have someone help me try out content in other languages. Let me know if you're interested (or just start adding content on the site and see how it goes!). Thanks. (WT-en) Maj 17:30, 20 June 2007 (EDT)
Actually, you could help right away by giving me the proper string for "Japanese" in Japanese so I can add it to the language tags. Thanks. (WT-en) Maj 17:34, 20 June 2007 (EDT)
Thank you Maj. Content can be made in all the Wikivoyage languages, wonderful ! The Japanese language in Japanese is "日本語" (Nihon-go). And a short while ago, I found that Japanese is one of the options in Languages section of the registration page. Is this for the planed UI multilingual support ? I don't have anything to write there now, but I am interested in the tag function because Wikivoyage have not come off yet. So I will try out content in Japanese. -- (WT-en) Tatata 21:33, 20 June 2007 (EDT)
I need some help with this. I want to add a link to Extra on es: and pt:, and ca: and ro: both need a Shared link and one for extra, but I apparently don't know what I'm doing. I know there are tags to edit somewhere first but I don't know where they are. Can someone give me a little walk-thru so I'll know how to handle this in the future? Thanks. (WT-en) Texugo 22:10, 20 June 2007 (EDT)
I don't know much about MediaWiki, but I think you can add links to the nav bar if you have sysop status.
Link for Shared
1. Make MediaWiki:Sharedpage and put Wikivoyage Shared or appropriate string into it.
2. Make MediaWiki:Shared-url and put internal link for Shared Shared:Main_Page into it.
3. Add ** shared-url|sharedpage to MediaWiki:Sidebar.
Link for Extra
1. Make MediaWiki:Extrapage and put Wikivoyage Extra or appropriate string into it.
2. Make MediaWiki:Extra-url and put url for Extra http://extra.wikivoyage.org into it.
3. Add ** extra-url|extrapage to MediaWiki:Sidebar.

I tried to log in Extra with OpenID, but I couldn't...
Messages were Unable authenticate. OpenID Discovery failed. with ja:User:tatata, and OpenID login failed. with http://ja.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User:Tatata or http://ja.wikivoyage.org/wiki/%E5%88%A9%E7%94%A8%E8%80%85:Tatata . In the end, I got a message Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /var/www/crossroads/modules/openid/openid.module on line 360. -- (WT-en) Tatata 05:26, 22 June 2007 (EDT)

How about a [[WikiPedia:]]-style mechanism for putting links to Wikibooks in the sidebar for Wikivoyage Phrasebook articles? ~ 58.8.6.169 15:08, 21 December 2007 (EST)

This is a good idea. How do we do this? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:26, 18 January 2008 (EST)
Don't know, but hopefully someone else does and will chip in... ~ 203.144.143.6 00:02, 25 January 2008 (EST)

Pub??

[edit]

I think it would be great to have the pub in the navigation box... any objections? We haven't even touched the logbook in 6 months, any objections if I swap it out for the pub? (WT-en) cacahuate talk 20:46, 21 June 2008 (EDT)

[edit]

Is there a way to make the upload link point to commons:Special:UploadWizard? And if so, is there any opposition to changing it? I would suspect that 99% of the users who want to upload a file will want to do so through commons, and for uploaders who really do have a reason for uploading here they will know that the local Special:Upload page is the place to do it. -- Ryan (talk) 18:57, 8 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

We should definitely change this. If I recall correctly, it will require a bugzilla request. --Peter Talk 21:54, 8 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

After some talk in Talk:Main Page, I think we should change the sidebar in "readers" and "editors" sections, a bit like is done at the English Wikipedia. I think we should try to make a clear distinction between those interested in reading the site, and those who want to get more involved in the project or want to get to know more.

Also, a way to navigate through all site content (a top level index) is very much needed I think. We can do that now via the Destinations page, which I think should be added to the sidebar navigation at the top. I put my proposal of what the sidebar navigation should look like in the box above. Comments and suggestions please :-) Globe-trotter (talk) 04:17, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Support from me. "Interaction" seems like an odd heading, but it's what Wikipedia uses and I don't have a better suggestion, so barring a good alternative I'd be in favor of making your proposed changes live if there aren't any objections. -- Ryan (talk) 06:21, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Maybe "Get involved"? I thought it sounds a bit convoluted, that's why I went with "Interaction". Globe-trotter (talk) 13:19, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I like "Get involved". Also, for clarity the original comments that led to the proposed changes can be found at the bottom of the Talk:Main Page#Map navigation discussion. -- Ryan (talk) 16:26, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Support per Ryan. Peter (Southwood) (talk): 16:19, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I also like this, but think recent changes should be moved to interaction, since it's not something a pure reader would ever want to see. Feedback at Talk:Destinations would be great too—especially if the top css notice could be spiffed up. --Peter Talk 19:41, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've updated the proposal per Peter F's suggestion. I'm not sure if the lack of additional comment means people haven't seen this discussion or if they're silently OK with it, so barring objection I'd suggest making the change live soon as that will DEFINITELY get the attention of anyone who hasn't yet commented :) -- Ryan (talk) 22:02, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Given the continuing silence I've plunged forward. -- Ryan (talk) 23:54, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Very nicely done. I like it! And "Get involved" is so much better than "Interaction". Thanks! --Rogerhc (talk) 19:05, 30 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

For some reason, I can no longer get the related pages and related sites menus expanded or contracted, effectively preventing me from clicking interwiki links. I'm using the default skin and have the same problem in Firefox and Chromium. --Peter Talk 19:24, 20 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't see what's causing the issues, but those sections won't collapse for me on the California page, and a few of the images on that page fail to load. The logo also loaded fairly slowly for me just now, so perhaps some early work is being done for the data center move that is having side-effects. -- Ryan (talk) 19:48, 20 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
This seems to work fine now. On a different note, though, I'd like to try and make our sidebar a little more eye-catching, especially for the Wikimedia site links. Could we add WP and Commons icons next to the links? Other ideas might include different background colors for the sidebar sections. --Peter Talk 00:02, 25 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

I added a link to Meta:Wikivoyage:Lounge per a suggestion at Wikivoyage talk:Destination of the month candidates#Cross-Wikivoyage nomination Travemünde. Please revert if there is any objection. --Peter Talk 08:02, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm not coming up with any ideas, but can anyone think of a better label? Something short that indicates the link goes to the cross-language lounge? I don't think "Meta" will be very obvious to most readers. -- Ryan (talk) 14:22, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Maybe "Interlingual"? It's kind of tough to come up with something clear that won't be too wide. --Peter Talk 17:46, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Does "Interlingual lounge" fit? That's only slightly longer than "Community portal" and conveys the purpose fairly clearly. -- Ryan (talk) 18:37, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Works for me. --Peter Talk 06:55, 10 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
