Talk:Birdwatching
Beautiful songbirds that are easy to hear
[edit]I'm glad this article has been started. I very much enjoy watching and listening to birds wherever I am, whether they are the common rock pigeon, house sparrow, mourning dove, crow, duck, whatever.
One subtopic that I think would be helpful to travellers is that of birds that sing particularly beautiful and interesting songs and where you are likely to hear them. My girlfriend and I are musicians, so we were delighted by the very varied and complex songs of the Eurasian blackbird in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Amsterdam. I've been similarly transfixed by what I believe were mockingbirds on the campus of Brooklyn College (I couldn't see those birds, only hear them). Travellers who aren't told to listen for these songbirds might not pay attention to them, as some Berliners told me they didn't, and in ignoring them, they are missing what could be a highlight of their trip.
What other songbirds do you think are worthy of mention? Nightingales and lyrebirds come to mind. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:55, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Probably not what most would describe as beautiful, but I love the sound of the w:Kookaburra in the morning --Andrewssi2 (talk) 04:06, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah, probably not. If we specially mention the kookaburra, we should probably mention the Canadian geese, seagulls and crows, too (though I'll grant that the kookaburra's song is more interesting). :-) Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:14, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Agreed :) --Andrewssi2 (talk) 04:22, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Banner
[edit]This new one is taken in The Coorong. It's probably more representative to this article than that one though. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 10:01, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
- I'm quite fond of the current banner, and don't think the new one is better. Will verify on desktop later on.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:46, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
- Here's another option, if we ever want to make a change. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:23, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. I still prefer the currently-used banner. The new banner you added is nice, but I think the very bright sun reflection harms it somewhat. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:40, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- The article is about birdwatching, not about birds watched. So, this is my suggestion. --FredTC (talk) 06:08, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. Good idea, but the problem is, none of the birds is clear in that picture. I still prefer the existing one. Besides, when someone is birdwatching, they see birds and don't focus on watching other birdwatchers. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:23, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- I agree with Ikan – banners 0 and 1 are better in that regard, IMO. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 10:09, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
