Policy violation?

[edit]

Wikivoyage:Bodies of water says that in general articles should not be created for lakes. However, there are exceptions such as Lake Tai & Lake Tanganyika.

Can this one be justified as an exception? I think not. Pashley (talk) 14:45, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Over the last 12h some folks with Mongolian (I think) usernames have added one article after another about Mongolian natural attractions, check out Recent changes. One article per user name, possibly so as not to get caught. Ibaman deleted some of the articles, Ikan left a message on one talk page, but apparently they don't care... Yes. I've deleted one (obvious copyvio), tagged one for a merge which @SHB2000: did, & left some talk page messages. Pashley (talk) 15:12, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
This looks to me like a teacher has suggested to a class that they all go contribute to WV. This is basically a fine idea; their local knowledge is quite valuable. However, it gets rather irritating when many of them simultaneously make the usual beginner mistakes.
Can we contact their teacher? They might prevent some of the mistakes & thereby save a lot of effort on cleaning them up.
Should we have a page, perhaps Wikivoyage:Welcome, teachers, with advice for teachers doing this? @Piotrus: could you contribute there? Pashley (talk) 15:45, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Very good idea. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:42, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've deleted seemingly plagiarized "articles" about Bulgan Mountain twice. Correct me if I'm wrong - none of these folks are replying to their user talk pages. Is there a good reason we shouldn't summarily delete everything they added, including redirects, since the article histories will include the copyvio? @Ikan Kekek, Pashley: I requested a CU check at m:SRCU#PearlyJwlSuvdaa@enwikivoyage since a lot of these users edited at seemingly staggered times. Feel free to add any accounts that I missed onto the SRCU report (though keep in mind the template can only handle a maximum of 10 users). --SHB2000 (t | c | m) 01:12, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I blocked 2 of them indefinitely for disruptive socking as per the CU report. --SHB2000 (t | c | m) 10:47, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Pashley I'd be happy to help with creating such a page, but my time right now is limited. Do check my (right now being rewritten) ideas for teaching assignments for Wikivoyage, right now at User:Hanyangprofessor2 - will be moved to a subpage eventually Piotrus (talk) 12:21, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's actually a good idea – Wikipedia has similar guidance at w:en:WP:ASSIGN, which we can use as a guidance page. --SHB2000 (t | c | m) 23:08, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
