War rugs[edit]

Azerbaijan? Caucasus?[edit]

We currently have an empty section at Carpets#Azerbaijan. Can anyone expand it?

My first impulse was to replace it with a more general section on w:Caucasian carpets and rugs. I've seen dealers in both Istanbul and Western countries label rugs as "Caucasian" but never "Azerbaijani". However, my experience here is quite limited & I could easily be wrong. WP has a longer article at w:Azerbaijani rug than it has for Caucasian rugs. Pashley (talk) 05:57, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I did edit, see Carpets#Caucasus. It could almost certainly be improved by someone who knows the region. Pashley (talk) 01:48, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Order of countries in Destinations?[edit]

How should we order the countries in the Destinations section? Yesterday it seemed to go from west to east (Turkey first, China last) and the first sentence in this paragraph also says "Oriental rugs are made more-or-less everywhere from Morocco to China". So I added a mention of Morocco right at the beginning, but Pashley moved it down. I think we should use some logical order; for example alphabetically or from west to east or east to west. --Ypsilon (talk) 09:16, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. I do not have a good answer & would be interested in hearing what others think.
I've been ordering them roughly in order of importance to the rug trade. Turkey & Iran first, then the Caucasus & Turkoman rugs, then the rest. That does not work remarkably well since it does not give a clear order & many of the choices are debatable. Pashley (talk) 10:55, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've now shuffled them into rough West-to-East order, but still wonder if there might be something better. Pashley (talk) 05:00, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Guide?[edit]

I've added quite a bit of text recently & have just promoted it outline->usable.

What else would it need to reach Guide & become eligible for a DotM nomination? To me, the obvious gaps are nothing between Morocco & Turkey, not all Caucasian countries covered, & not enough detail about Iran. Pashley (talk) 07:05, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say it could be promoted now. Other opinions? Pashley (talk) 15:30, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This seems like a very good article to me. I particularly like the tips given at the end for how to easily distinguish between hand-made and machine-made rugs. Is this a possible FTT? Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:38, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Promoted. I agree it might make a fine FFT, but have not nominated it yet. Are there things we should add before that? Pashley (talk) 06:46, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly more about tapestries; see my remarks at the bottom of the page. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:12, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalize "Oriental" or not?[edit]

I'd type "Oriental carpets", but I don't know if that's the practice. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:35, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure either, but I capitalised it in a recent edit. Pashley (talk) 07:19, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's best to leave Oriental capitalised. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 07:40, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It was lowercase in the lede. I edited accordingly. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:56, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Central Asia[edit]

@Pashley: Since you seem to be the most knowledgeable about this subject, I was wondering if you know much about the carpets of Central Asia. I see that you have already covered Turkmenistan and Afghanistan in the article, but if I'm not wrong, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have their own unique styles too. The dog2 (talk) 00:57, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Probably, but I do not know enough to write about them. Likely other places could also be added at Carpets#Caucasus & certainly more cities under Carpets#Iran. Pashley (talk) 01:05, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pashley: There is a page here which describes some of them: [1]. Do you think this page is reliable? The dog2 (talk) 01:31, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Probably & web search turns up info on everywhere you mention. See also w:Uzbek carpet Pashley (talk) 02:02, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Native American rugs[edit]

If I'm not wrong, some of the Native American ethnic groups make their own rugs that tourists can purchase, but I'm not sure if that is a traditional thing, or if was introduced to the Native Americans by European colonists but adapted to include Native American motifs in the design. Perhaps we can cover some of those here. The dog2 (talk) 18:24, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

See w:Navajo weaving. Those are flat-woven like kelims, not pile rugs. I do not know if other tribes also make rugs. Pashley (talk) 21:56, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So do you think we should include them? Only this is where to put them since they don't fit nicely in the "West to East" order we've been using. The dog2 (talk) 22:19, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We might add a section "outside Asia". The French & Flemish made carpets, e.g. see w:Aubusson tapestry. Romania, w:Scandinavian rugs, w:Carpet#Spain, etc. Pashley (talk) 11:02, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A section with some destination listings? A one-line comment? Something in between? Pashley (talk) 11:14, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Since this is a travel article, I think a section with destination listings would be better, and a brief description of tapestries outside Asia. The dog2 (talk) 16:43, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There's now a section Carpets#Outside_Asia_and_North_Africa, likely incomplete. Pashley (talk) 14:46, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tapestries[edit]

These are mentioned a bit. Is there enough current-day artisanal tapestry-making to be worth covering? Here are some hand-made tapestries up for auction; some are modern. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:44, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
