Article name[edit]

It seems that the most common English name for these islands is "the Cocos Islands"; I'm going to move this article to that name. --(WT-en) Evan 00:12, 17 November 2006 (EST)

Use 24hr time here?[edit]

Since this island is more connected to Indonesia and Malaysia, I'm assuming they'll be using 24 hour time here. The official language here is Malay so I'm also assuming that they use 24 hour time here as well. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 11:11, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Malay dialect is similar to English"[edit]

What does that mean? Lots of borrow words, I guess, but still, I'd have to imagine that if you don't speak Malay, you won't be able to follow it. Could we please clarify the point? Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:20, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

One month late, but well, Bahasa Melayu uses latin script, but I'll clarify it. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:48, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Breadcrumb under Australia or Asia[edit]

@Ikan Kekek, The dog2: Given that geographically this island is the southernmost point of Asia and is not part of Oceania, shouldn't we breadcrumb this under Asia? It's a similar reason why we breadcrumb Heard Island and McDonald Islands under Subantarctic islands, not Australia. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 04:04, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The regular Australian visa requirements apply for the Cocos Islands, and it is only accessible by a flight from mainland Australia, so I'll say we should leave it under Australia for now. The dog2 (talk) 04:06, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. We don't do everything strictly by geography. The Canary Islands are off the coast of Africa but are breadcrumbed to Spain. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:50, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
True. But then American Samoa is breadcrumbed to Polynesia. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:01, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
American Samoa is exceedingly far from the nearest U.S. state. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:25, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
True. Maybe American Samoa was a bad example, but again, it's also same with Macquarie Island or the New Zealand Subantarctic Islands, (not breadcrumbed under Tasmania nor NZ respectively). For comparison, CKI is about 2700 km from the mainland and the Mac Island or the New Zealand Subantarctic Islands is roughly 1,500 km off Tasmania. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:41, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The Canary Islands are also around fifteen hundred kilometres from mainland Spain too. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:44, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
But they're not breadcrumbed to a different continent, are they? I think breadcrumbing these islands to Asia would confuse the issue. Consider that Indonesia is not part of mainland Asia, too. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:47, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, that would pose an issue too as whether Indonesia is part of Asia or Oceania is a matter of who you ask which is already a problem with some of our Eastern Indonesian article breadcrumbs. Yeah I now agree we should leave it as it is. It just seemed strange to me that we're breadcrumbing the southernmost point of Asia into Oceania, but that's a relatively minor issue. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:50, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be open to breadcrumbing it to Islands of the Indian Ocean, but that's an extraregion, and only the British Indian Ocean Territory seems to be breadcrumbed to it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:02, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'd much rather here than there. I think the only reason why the BIOT is breadcrumbed under there is because it's more a questionable mix of whether it's part of South Asia or not. However, Category:Subantarctic islands seems to have five articles breadcrumbed underneath it. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 08:05, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The proposed replacement is not big enough. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:51, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Have added four more banners. The biggest issue is that nearly all the photos available on Commons was taken by a certain flickr user so most of the sizes are small and don't meet our requirements. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:14, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Added two more. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:21, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
All of the proposed replacements are too small. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:25, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not banner six though. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:30, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. Poor quality, though, maybe marginally superior to the existing banner, but it would be great if it could be desaturated and de-noised. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:33, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Interestingly, when you preview the page with these banners, there doesn't seem to be much quality issues, but I do agree that it's too small. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:52, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
