Talk:Freetown

First of all, I'd like to thank Davidbstanley for his contribution to Freetown and Sierra Leone, they're not your normal tourist destinations and that makes information about them all the more valuable.

One issue though: in normal Wikivoyage style, information about a single city is kept on one single page if possible, and only "huge" cities get multiple pages — which should use the format "City/District". Hugeness depends not just on size/population, but the degree of attractiveness to tourists: Paris has a lot to see, Dhaka perhaps less. Does Freetown qualify as a "huge" city, or would it be possible to squeeze all the info the traveller needs to know into one (long) page? (WT-en) Jpatokal 04:04, 30 Apr 2005 (EDT)

Districts[edit]

In consolidating Freetown the following pages were orphaned. These are all districts of Freetown, so I have moved them to district pages. However, I am not sure they should be district pages, or be deleted:

Deletion of district pages[edit]

I created them originally. The Freetown pages were my first contribution to WikiTravel. At the time it seemed a good idea to have these district pages, but I agree with Jpatokal that they are not necessary. Deletion would seem to be the best option in my opinion. I did not know how to do this when I consolidated them into the Freetown page. (WT-en) Davidbstanley

To permanently delete pages you can list them on Project:Votes for deletion and replace the text with {{vfd}}. However there is no need to permanently delete these pages, as they can simply be redirected to Freetown. That way you do not lose the editing history and the pages can be resurrected if they are ever needed in the future. Also you can change your mind if you ever feel we need district pages again because the main Freetown article gets too big. So I will redirect them now. -- (WT-en) Huttite 02:45, 18 Dec 2005 (EST)

Safe?[edit]

Just wondering who provided / and or obtained the information that "Violent crime is very rare in Freetown." I am thinking that this is not a person who has actually come from Freetown, or since been travelling there. Just a curious reader. --—The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 213.42.21.151 (talkcontribs)

As a regular traveller to Freetown, I would say that it is generally safe. It is true that there have been a few armed robberies recently, but violence aimed at visitors is still quite rare. I walk around any parts of the city without worry. (WT-en) Davidbstanley 04:07, 28 June 2007 (EDT)

Radisson Mammy Yoko Hotel reopening[edit]

When will the aforementioned hotel open in 2010? Is it open already? I don't know if it's open or not. (WT-en) CurvyEthyl 03:34, 19 September 2010 (EDT)

No it is not open yet. There is still a lot of work to do. Most likely it will be sometime next year. (WT-en) Davidbstanley 09:38, 2 October 2010 (EDT)

To Guide and DotM?[edit]

This is one of our better articles from Africa. I've been preliminarily thinking about possible candidates for Destination of the month for one of the Northern Hemisphere late autumn/winter/early spring months 2019-20 — per the climate table this happens to be the best time of the year to visit Freetown.

What is still needed for guide status (= the article is so good that the average doesn't need any other travel guide) and eligibility for a DotM nomination? At least all listings need to have coordinates, and descriptions need to be added to the ones that still lack them. Some more photos would be nice to have. Is there something important about the city still missing?

No rush, though, it's more than a year before it could go on the Main Page at earliest.

Since the DOTM nomination lists are getting really long, we may as well wait and let it cool down for a while. What I'd like to see in this article is:
  1. A new, better banner, if possible.
  2. Better formatted content, and perhaps some more activity listings, in the "Do" section.
  3. A lot more information in the "Buy" section, and several listings.
  4. Some links to places in the "Go next" section.
It's totally possible, but there's no harm done in waiting a while. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 17:29, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've been one of the harshest critics of having articles sitting around on the nominations page for longer than necessary and I never nominate anything until it "needs" to be nominated (in general 2-3 months before the slots show up in the schedule is usually good, if later it might end up waiting until next season). But given that there are some work to do on the article, it's better to bring it up on the talk page already now. ϒpsilon (talk) 17:57, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
David, how well would you say the article covers Freetown as of now? ϒpsilon (talk) 21:06, 15 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I would say is is pretty good and current. It might understate the number of bars and restaurants now available because of the last few years development. But you could certainly find the important places. I updated a few parts and will continue to do so.Davidbstanley (talk) 07:08, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great! --ϒpsilon (talk) 07:24, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
