"Bring supplies" in the Eat section?

[edit]

The village has a grocery store, and the hotel apparently serves meals. Why do visitors need to bring supplies? —Granger (talk · contribs) 02:05, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think Wikivoyage articles should be based on firsthand or secondhand information, not this kind of idle speculation. If readers want to speculate, they can do so themselves, it's unhelpful for us to present speculation as if it's real advice from someone who knows what they're talking about.
To reach guide status, this article would need clear explanations of how to get in and get around, advice on doing the activities mentioned in "Do", and something in the "Eat" section other than speculation. —Granger (talk · contribs) 12:00, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I was joking but not too much. Pics were added, see for yourself. Ibaman (talk) 13:49, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I used to be a firm believer in speculation but more recently I've changed my mind. I agree with Granger that we should avoid it here, and I think we should keep the article at usable status until someone who's been to the destination gives his/her contributions to the article. We can't be sure about the cost of food, etc. in Gjoa Haven without evidence. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 14:34, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for contributing to this article, by the way. It's better to have something here than no content at all about the place. Hopefully as Wikivoyage continues to expand its content, we'll be able to see local contributors or tourists develop this article to guide status. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 16:55, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
In communities in Canada's Far North, including Gjoa Haven, where supplies including groceries are brought in by boat once a year and flown in at other times, the outrageously high cost of food is well known and well documented. Governments provide shipping subsidies, anyone flying south (e.g. for medical care) brings back boxes of food. Gjoa Haven has only a thousand people. How well stocked are its two stores? Here are some articles. This is not speculation. Keep in mind that the prices in the CBC and HuffPost articles are in Canadian dollars, C$1 = US$0.71.

Prices certainly can be included, then. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 18:14, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) I agree—if anyone knows the prices or availability of groceries in Gjoa Haven, I think that would be very useful information for the article. And if it is indeed true that visitors need to bring their own supplies, then by all means let's say so. What I really want to avoid is including guesses disguised as facts. —Granger (talk · contribs) 18:20, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
let's get real, guys, the Everest Base Camp in Nepal surely has better connections to the "outside", and cheaper food prices, than Gjoa Haven. It's a matter of considering the logistics involved. Consider comparing their respective capitals Kathmandu and Iqaluit (counting the kilometers) for a better picture, if you will. If I ever went to either, I wouldn't need to think to pack my bag full of beef jerky and instant noodles and water bottles and toilet paper. Ibaman (talk) 18:29, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
A smart tourist would, but we can't be sure that all tourists would plan ahead in this way. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 19:20, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Ground Zero: Is your point that all visitors to small towns in Northern Canada should bring their own supplies? —Granger (talk · contribs) 20:58, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Towns connected by road are probably better. I think is the ones where food is brought in by air and by annual supply ship where the problem is greatest. Ground Zero (talk) 21:06, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
For the record, this article was created solely for its historic relevance to the "Northwest Passage", "John Franklin" and "Roald Amundsen" topics of historic travel prose. My point is to thoroughly describe, per the angle of ttcf, what is known about the place. Ibaman (talk) 21:44, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Mx. Granger: And yes, I think we should have a standard line on each fly-in community article, something along the lines of: "In communities in Canada's Far North, including <this one>, supplies like groceries are brought in by boat once a year and flown in at other times. The cost of food is outrageously high. Bringing in some supplies of your own could help keep your costs down." Comments? Ground Zero (talk) 21:45, 19 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sounds reasonable enough to me. Of course, in cases where we have someone with local knowledge of the specific community, it can be made more specific and detailed. —Granger (talk · contribs) 22:11, 19 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Usable or Guide?

[edit]

@Ibaman: asked if this article is ready to be a Guide article. Here is what is required for Guide status, with my comments:

  • A brief general overview allows the voyager to understand why this destination is of historic, geographic or cultural interest. Yes Done
  • The article has different choices for accommodation and eating/drinking (if applicable) Yes Done -- the article covers all of the options available
  • information on multiple attractions and things to do. Yes Done
  • Listings and layout closely match the manual of style. Yes Done -- pretty much, in my view, based on the information that is available on line
  • There are clear explanations of multiple ways to get in, -- (1) There is no information on the supply boat. Is it even possible to ride as a passenger? (2) Cruise ships go there -- information on these could be added. Which companies?
I reckon it won't make Guide without these. Ibaman (talk) 21:59, 19 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • clear information on getting around (preferably including a map with point-of-interest markers), -- there is no map, and the information is vague. There is not much that can be said -- there is no transit. Is there a taxi? Do the hotel and B&B do airport pick-up? How do you get in from the airport?
I could add markers for the outdoors locations of the Museum listed, but it will take some research. Ibaman (talk) 21:59, 19 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • suggestions for where to go next, with one-liner descriptions. -- need a one-liner for Rankin Inlet. Also, is it appropriate to list these places if there is no flight there?
Yes Done. If Cambridge Bay (YCB) and Taloyoak (YYH) merit articles, I have no way of knowing. Ibaman (talk) 21:59, 19 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Should have a custom page-banner. Yes Done

Is “Amundsen Inn” the same place as “Amundsen Inns North Hotel”? If so, a link could be made from Gjoa Haven#Eat to Gjoa Haven#Sleep. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 11:02, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
