I had to do a little funky HTML formatting to get the images to align nicely so there's exactly one per section with no overlap, so please complain if it looks bad on your browser. (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:36, 11 Dec 2004 (EST)

Three views[edit]

Is there a way to rephrase this to make it clearer that these are scenic views? I initially assumed the 'philosophical views' interpretation, but am drawing a blank right now for a gracefull way to rephrase it. 132.174.23.47 14:20, 16 March 2007 (EDT)

Actually the Japanese word 景 means scenic, so how about 'Three Famous Scenic Sites'? (WT-en) WindHorse 20:26, 16 March 2007 (EDT)
Wikipedia also uses the wording Three Views, and I think it's the most common form. (WT-en) Jpatokal 02:27, 17 March 2007 (EDT)

National Treasures[edit]

I removed these:

Shuri Castle was a national treasure in 1925, but since it was destroyed in WWII, it is no longer listed as a treasure. No sites listed Hirosaki Castle as having ever been a national treasure, and despite being a "top 3" castle, Kumamoto Castle is fake, therefore also not a national treasure.

I wonder, though, should National Treasures even be listed on this page? There are also temples, shrines, etc. that would clutter this page if they were added to related Top 3's. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 04:29, 17 May 2009 (EDT)

Top Castles[edit]

What source is our "Top Castles" list from? The most common list seems to be:

  • Nagoya Castle
  • Osaka Castle
  • Kumamoto Castle

Some replace Osaka with Himeji Castle. See Wikipedia [1] (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 02:06, 21 January 2010 (EST)

The Wikipedia also lists 2 "Top 3 Onsen" in Oita Prefecture... (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 02:10, 21 January 2010 (EST)

Likewise this WP article [2], which does include Himeji. It gives a partial source for the variant list with Osaka -- but also claims that list is dubious. Practically speaking, I can't imagine not listing Himeji as one of the Top 3. - (WT-en) D. Guillaime 03:18, 21 January 2010 (EST)
Although I personally agree that Himeji should be there, the "top 3" I have heard, was always Osaka, Nagoya, and Kumamoto. Even with the list as Himeji, Matsumoto, and Kumamoto I personally don't like it, since I think a top 3 list should be limited to a list containing 3 of the 12 remaining original castles, but everyone will have different opinions... That's why I question our list. Although it looks more reasonable, it just doesn't seem to match the majority. Part of me wonders if the Japanese prefer the top 3 to not include Himeji in order to encourage travel to other castles. There are Japanese who agree that the list is odd without Himeji [3].
At any rate, I'm just wondering if we have chosen our list based on our own preferences, since our list is in actuality the least common...
Incidentally, there are two other castle lists. One is the mountain castles, the other is this one "三大平山城", which includes Himeji:
  • Tsuyama Castle
  • Himeji Castle
  • Matsuyama Castle

(I don't know a good way to translate this category that is not really awkward. This site [4] calls them "Flatland Mountain Castles". Not so attractive...)

Do we want to add the other castle lists in order to get Himeji a more legitimate spot in the castle list?

New banner[edit]

Suggestion 0: Current banner
Suggestion 1: Amanohashidate.
Suggestion 2: Miyajima. Current banner.
Suggestion 3: Matsushima.

The nominees are all from the Sankei. The current banner is not, and is considered for other destinations. See Talk:Japan#New banners. /Yvwv (talk) 12:57, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer Bannner 2 SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 13:05, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There are surprisingly few high-quality shots of Matsushima, and one of them is used for both Matsushima and Miyagi. See Talk:Miyagi for new candidates. /Yvwv (talk) 09:41, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Banner is replaced, but the competition is still open for more banners. /Yvwv (talk) 17:08, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I approve of the replacement. My ranking would be 2, 3, 0, 1. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:25, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer 1 since all of Amanohashidate fits into the banner and Miyajima can be a bit overdone, not to mention it's already the lede photo. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 10:29, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I am guessing a combination of all three locations in one banner would be out of the question? If so, my vote is for 2, followed by 1. JRHorse (talk) 12:52, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

By convention, we don't use collages for banners. /Yvwv (talk) 15:13, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying. JRHorse (talk) 04:04, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
