Rehydration salts

[edit]

From the article:

Please note that in summer you MUST add rehydration salts to your drinking water. If you drink too much water without added rehydration salts, as you sweat, you risk flushing the natural salts out of your system and inducing a heart attack.

Can someone please provide links to authoritative medical sites that make this statement? I have no idea whether it's true or not, but I don't want us giving medical advice without knowing for sure that it's wise. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:22, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Travel Doc would be the right person to answer (also, our Stay healthy articles could maybe use a "yearly check" too). ϒpsilon (talk) 19:49, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Not really an "authoritative medical site," but w:Hyponatremia might be a good place to start. I myself remember having some of the earliest symptoms of hyponatremia after a hard day's walk along the Lycian Way in summer some years ago. Vidimian (talk) 22:05, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
So, specifically a reduction of sodium. And the problem is, intake of sodium can raise blood pressure, and that can be dangerous for some people, which is one of the reasons I'd like this issue clarified. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:29, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, that's right... I'm not really sure how those with a low sodium diet handle situations like this. Back to the article, maybe we should replace "...you MUST add rehydration salts..." with something along the lines of "...you are recommended to add rehydration salts...". "Salts," by definition, include vital non-sodium compounds such as Potassium chloride as well, so the statement is not totally out of line even considering those that should partake in a diet low in sodium. Maybe something like "In general, you are recommended to add rehydration salts as well as water, but check with your doctor for advice before you go." Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:36, 10 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
In health it is always best to hedge ones recommendations (no absolutes). Thus agree with Ikan that it is a recommendation. Travel Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 22:41, 18 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Doc. I'll edit accordingly. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:56, 18 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I fixed the "correction". Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:15, 13 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Well, I just emptied the list already. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 02:21, 13 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
