Romanization?

[edit]

Wikipedia has this city under WikiPedia:Mykolaiv. Could we agree on a standard Project:Romanization for Ukrainian? (WT-en) Jpatokal 23:53, 21 May 2005 (EDT)

Миколаїв

[edit]

As you can see, Ukrainian letters in the name of the city are different. Unfortunately, ambiguity was created by Wikipedia. Also there is no Wikipedia Romanization standard for Ukrainian yet therefore we don't have a base to agree upon ;) Even City Council doesn't know where they govern :) http://www.gorsovet.mk.ua/home.en Check the latest English map of Ukraine or CIA Worldbook http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/up.html Try Google with both version and compare results. If possible we should link both options to the same page on both Wikipedia and Wikivoyage.

City name

[edit]

"Mykolaiv" is the correct transcription. Alexei (talk) 15:21, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia says:
"The city is known under two names, which differ in Ukrainian and Russian; there are several transliterations of each name. The Ukrainian name of the city is Микола́їв, transliterated as Mykolaiv or (officially) Mykolayiv. The Russian name, Никола́ев, transliterates as Nikolaev or as Nikolayev."
The city's website uses Mykolaiv. The city has not been occupied by Russia. Ground Zero (talk) 15:41, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
