Niue should be treated as a "country"
[edit]Because of its isolation, distinctive culture, self-governing status and other trappings of nationhood (such as its own flag, country code and internet TLD, I believe Niue should be treated as a country within Wikivoyage's geographical hierarchy.
If I am correct, then the section order should follow Wikivoyage:Country_article_template, should it not? --W. Franke-mailtalk 10:32, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
- Although there seems to be no opposition to the notion that Niue is a country within Wikivoyage's geographical hierarchy, I'd better clarify that I believe Niue is too small both in area; population; cultural, geological and climatological differences to be subdivided into districts. --W. Franke-mailtalk 11:43, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
Because of the tiny size of each village and both the current actual small size and potential size of our village articles I will merge them all into Niue if there are no rational objections in next 7 days.
The existing village articles of Alofi, Avatele, Hikutavake, Liku, Mutalau and Namukulu should be merged into this article - the other villages have been "red links" for many years. Because of the small size and population of these villages (even Alofi has less than 500 souls) and the short travelling times between them, it's more useful for the visitor to Niue to have all their accommodation, beverage and shopping choices in this one "whole-island" article of Niue. --W. Franke-mailtalk 11:43, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- I understand. I'm OK with your doing the merge if no-one else objects (so wait a day or two, perhaps), but I hope that some of the thumbnails I put into village articles can be added to the main article as part of the merge. I take it, Niue is one of the places you've visited? Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:03, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- I've never been there myself (and never likely to go there now at my age), but my friend Alice does know a lot about Niue due to work and has told me some local tittle-tattle which is probably best not repeated in print.
- I haven't done Alofi yet, but I've moved all useful information from the other 5 villages (including thumbnails) today already and have no intention of losing anything useful, Ikan Kekek. --W. Franke-mailtalk 19:27, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- All the information and images from the village articles has now been imported to Niue and re-directs here created Done --W. Franke-mailtalk 21:33, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
Guide status?
[edit]User:Fmarier has been making marvellous edits to this article. Is it a Guide now? And is it ready for an Off the beaten path nomination? If not, what further work is needed? Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:58, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
- On further inspection, all the villages need a 1-line description of some kind. It looks like "Other destinations" can be skipped, but I think we should list several, because there are pretty fantastic natural sights on the island. This is our guide on how to do that. I may work on that later. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:14, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
- I added a very rudimentary "Other destinations" section. It's in alphabetical order, which might or might not be the best order. It would be preferable for each of the attractions on this list to have a brief 1-line description, to help sell the reader on the idea of reading more in "See." Vandalism?
[edit]This paragraph appears too ridiculous to be true, but I might be wrong:
“ | The word "Niue" is not used in the local language to refer to this island, meaning in fact "Look! There's a coconut". Captain Cook called it "Savage Island", thinking (incorrectly) that the natives who came to fend him off were painted in blood; the locals had eaten a native red banana, called the hulahula. | ” |
I've removed it from the article for now, but if this is actually true - and you can show a source - please add it back in. Orthogonal1 (talk) 21:09, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
- w:Niue contains the same information and cites sources, so it seems to be true. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:51, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
What needs to be done to make this a guide?
[edit]Just wondering, since it's pretty good in my opinion, and I don't see anything missing. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 00:08, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
- I remember doing some editing work on this. It seems to me, when all listings have geocoordinates, it will be a guide. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:05, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
- Also, the dynamic and static maps of the island should be made toggleable, and I think the static map should be the default. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:07, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

- I'll do the coords soon. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 03:38, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
