Steps before promoting to Guide

[edit]

I've developed the Understand section of the article with a history of the town. How much more is required before promoting to Guide status? Is it already eligible for Informative status? JsfasdF252 (talk) 19:10, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Ground Zero Since you just edited the article, do you have any thoughts? JsfasdF252 (talk) 20:58, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Guide status is not something I know very much about, so I can't really help you, aside from pointing you to Wikivoyage:City article status and Wikivoyage:Guide articles which set out the criteria for city guide articles. Ground Zero (talk) 22:32, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Now that all the major subtopics have been covered, is it ready for guide status? JsfasdF252 (talk) 23:17, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Small town articles are my favourites, and I would say this is pretty close to being a guide. Beyond the hour of editing I just put in, there are some improvements that I'd recommend:
  • Are there bus connections from the stations to TR? Car rental? Taxis/Uber (how much)?
  • 'Get around' has some listings that should be checked and marked up-to-date; e.g. the river taxi "seems to be running" as of 2015.
  • Does the River Lady just charge a flat fare for all of its cruises?
  • What is a Beach Badge and how do I get hold of one?
  • Online research suggested the May food festival was cancelled, but there's a September festival with a new name. Can you confirm?
  • The 'Eat' listings could do with indicative prices, either for a typical main or for a set menu if available.
  • The 'Drink' section just listed restaurants (frankly, the nicer-sounding ones), so I combined that into a 'Eat and Drink' section. If there are any pure bars worth visiting, please add, but this isn't necessary.
  • It would be handy to order the 'Sleep' listings from cheapest to most expensive, and include nightly rate on all listings.
  • Some listings need qualitative information: ice rink, golf course, Main Street Antiques, Surf Taco, Days Hotel. Reasons to visit and what to expect are just as important as the practicalities of opening hours and contact deets.
Hope this feedback is helpful. Feel free to ping me for more help. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 12:05, 23 January 2023 (UTC), updated 12:46, 23 January 2023Reply
@ThunderingTyphoons! Could the article be re-evaluated? JsfasdF252 (talk) 02:15, 27 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
It's looking a lot better, but there are items on my list unchecked. I've struck through ones which are fulfilled. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 20:31, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Does it mean it's still not ready for guide status? For example, Annapolis, which has guide status (since 2019), doesn't have coordinates or prices for many of the Eat listings, and the "Understand" section isn't nearly as well developed. JsfasdF252 (talk) 22:29, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek What is your stance? JsfasdF252 (talk) 18:42, 29 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I haven't looked at this article with a fine-toothed comb, but I think instead of comparing it to other articles that have deficiencies, you should work to fix them. Maybe Annapolis should be demoted, based on your description. Start a thread at Talk:Annapolis, if you like. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:03, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Do you think this and that article's status should be changed to the experimental "Informative"? Also, if this article still doesn't get upgraded to Guide status, would I still get points for this article for the current edit-a-thon? JsfasdF252 (talk) 07:24, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Is that what you're concerned about? I'd say just keep working. You've been doing an excellent job. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:15, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000 Since you tend to rate articles more generously, do you think this one deserves the guide status? JsfasdF252 (talk) 05:43, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I think it's very close to being guide. My only perk is that Ocean County Mall needs a description, and that's about it – otherwise, it fulfills per Wikivoyage:City article status. A lede opening in #Sleep would also be nice, but isn't necessary for guide. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 07:48, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Out of my checklist, I'd say the 'Get in' point is most important to fix for getting to 'guide' status, because it affects whether particular travellers can visit Toms River or not. So I've reached the station at Point Pleasant / Trenton, but my destination Toms River; how do I do the last 20+ miles? The others in my list would be nice to fix, but not essential.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 11:29, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I made an attempt to address both of your main points, so now is it ready for guide? JsfasdF252 (talk) 02:49, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
LGTM – I think you can promote it to guide now. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 10:07, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mormons among the first settlers?

[edit]

The Understand says:

"The first settlers of the area included many that were exiled from nearby colonies on basis on religion, including Mormons. Toms River was founded in 1767."

What made a Mormon a Mormon in 1767? What religion were they exiled for? w:Mormons says "The Mormon movement began with the publishing of the Book of Mormon in March 1830", some 60 years after the founding of the town, and the "first settlers of the area" must have come even before that. –LPfi (talk) 17:03, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Seems this has been fixed in the article. –LPfi (talk) 20:44, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
