Travelling to countries which do not respect human rights[edit]

Hey man, I'd also like to see some countries which run an apartheid system for women (like Saudi Arabia), feature the imprisonment of homosexuals (like Abu Dhabi and Dubai) and public executions (like, uhm, Saudi). Where else do you recommend? Is North Korea quite good for this sort of thing? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Spark (talkcontribs)

Regarding Comments to MSG[edit]

Dear Jpatokal,

I have personally experienced many problems with MSG which is why I was trying to warn others.

However I apologize for changing your statement, I will leave things as they are for the time being and hope that will be an end to the matter.

Good luck and thanks for your work on here.

Edits to Abu Dhabi and Saudi[edit]

Why you changing these? YOU try and bring Police Academy 4 into Saudi Arabi and see what happens.

All anons are blocked?[edit]

Just tried to make an anonymous edit and it said I was blocked. It gave an IP of 172.16.253.210 and said CJensen was the blocker with a block number of 277. Not my IP and the block log looks like Peter Fitzgerald blocked that IP. Is it blocking all anons? -- (WT-en) OldPine 07:43, 21 February 2008 (EST)

(Answering self) How the heck should I know, OldPine? Why do you ask me stuff I have no idea about? -- (WT-en) OldPine 09:12, 21 February 2008 (EST)
Uh oh. Peter here, I just logged out to test this. It seems that all anons are turning up as this one 172 anon. Yikes! Dorganbot[edit]

Hi! I hope, you remember me. I'm Dorgan, from hu.wikivoyage. And I have a bot. I want to run my bot in hungarian wikivoyage, but I've got a problem. The bot works with hu:Special:Allmessages. But the translation file is wrong, and when I open this page, I get the hu:Special:Prefixindex page. You can see: Prefixindex is the same as Allmessages. What can I do now? And my other question is: can I, or how can I or anybody get the bureaucrat-flag in hu.wikivoyage? Thanks for your attention! Regards, (WT-en) Dorgan 13:22, 21 March 2008 (EDT)

Oh, sorry, I'm wrong. hu:Special:Allpages and hu:Special:Prefixindex is the same...... :). And the bot works with allpages too. (WT-en) Dorgan 05:24, 22 March 2008 (EDT)

Unfortunatelly the problem is still there. If you get hu:Special:Allpages and en:Special:Allpages you can see the difference between the two pages. The translation problem is in the MessagesHu.php in the wikivoyage server. And the bot couldn't work with the wrong hu:Special:Allpages. The MessagesHu.php should be up to date. (WT-en) Dorgan 14:21, 22 March 2008 (EDT)

Please, see: [1] and [2] : it's a translation error. (WT-en) Dorgan 06:17, 23 March 2008 (EDT)

nearest attractions again[edit]

Jani, sorry for bothering--but I'd like to come to some sort of consensus in Project:Accommodation listings#nearest attractions. As you changed the meaning [3] of my original template, could you reply in [4] where we started discussing it? --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 11:13, 22 March 2008 (EDT)

I've refined my proposal; please let me know if you have any comments. After 2 weeks from now, I am going to incorporate the proposal into article itself (Project:Accommodation listings). Reverting from there will take discussion first ;-) --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 20:44, 8 March 2009 (EDT)

Maps and OSM[edit]

Hi. Thanks for the comments. I've actually logged on to OSM already, but I couldn't figure out how to use it. It all seems to be about using GPS Traces (whatever they are), and I can't figure out how to make maps there any other way. Am I missing something? --(WT-en) The.Q(t)(c) 12:24, 27 March 2008 (EDT)

Yep, I found the various interfaces so confusing and cumbersome that I wasn't able to make some basic corrections to a few rural roads in Colorado (hoping to use the OSM map as a background for a map to the Comanche National Grasslands). I too found it over my head. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 13:58, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
It is easy, just open your webbrowser on www.openstreetmap.org. Create an account. Open the index "edit", then you have all roads laid out with red dots(nodes). to begin with press "play" instead of "start". Try marking on of the roads, I now see that there are a lot of auto-generated data from something called "tiger", in the bottom you can add tags by pressing "+" e.g. "name". You can lay out a new road by just drawing it. for help on how to add nodes, join roads, creating areas and so forth look at online editor help. /(WT-en) Johan Jönsson 12:12, 30 March 2008 (EDT)

about Wikivoyage Chinese[edit]

Hi, recently we have problems that somebody from 61.49.172.158 has deleted the pages and wrote the "Fxxx" and so on instead. I think if we need at least one Chinese-speaking administrator to coordinate everything, or at least to protect the frameworks. How do you think about that? Thank you! --(WT-en) biobeyond

Will, even though I have not many time (I'm a student), I can have a try to be a administrator. I'm from China, I live in France, I speak chinese, french and english. (WT-en) AdrienChen 18:53, 22 April 2008 (EDT)

Always the most resent travel information.[edit]

Who wants to seekup something about a town or destination has to 'go wikivoyage' these days. This travelsite contains more than 30,000 guides which every day, sometimes every hour, are being updated. From now you also can order on line certain travel guides by Wikivoyage Press. The best guides are being selected to be checked and polished by local writers. When the surfer orders a guide, will this be printed specially and 'Hot of the Press' and within a view days delivered at home. Result: a very resent travel guide with without any doubt the latest news about the destination. No restaurants or bars who no more exist or has chanced its name. You can deliver feedback on your travel guide what is put on line within one month. Price 12,07 euro a guide and 4,99 euro for delivery to Europe. www.wikivoyagepress.com==

Tip[edit]

You are likely one of the most traveled on WT and a young fellow to boot. You may have thought of this, but you may want to consider buying some mylar flips and picking up the best "undamaged" coins you can afford to stick away from the countries you visit. When you get to be an old fart like me, they likely will have some value. The silver and gold ones will be the most scarce. Just a thought. [[6]] (WT-en) 2old 16:26, 29 April 2008 (EDT)

Naoshima & thanks for welcome[edit]

I hope you can make it to Naoshima when you finally get to Japan. It's a beautiful island. Thanks for supporting my work. It would be lovely to get OTBP for that place - it could certainly do with the attention now, before the travel guides get a hold of the place. (WT-en) Deconstruct 06:01, 3 May 2008 (EDT)

Reverted Australia edits[edit]

You just reverted ALL my edits to Australia. Please tell me what precisely was wrong with those edits you reverted (ie all of them.) Long winded discussion about vegemite I do not think really help a traveller too much. What about Project:Plunge forward? I'm only trying to make a better article. 124.168.67.70 02:24, 4 May 2008 (EDT)

Well I will comment here. Problem is you reverted ALL edits. Much of what I removed was quite silly, and misleading information. I have done another set of edits now, as they were previously discussed of the talk page of Australia. Please do not simply do another indiscriminate REVERT ALL this time. I have not yet got an account but will do so. 124.168.12.254 16:14, 13 May 2008 (EDT)

OpenStreetMap conversion[edit]

I like what you have done at Wikivoyage_talk:How_to_draw_a_map#OpenStreetMap. Any progress on that? I've been working on something simular, but without the complete automation; we still have to add our symbols manually to the map (OSM data for South Africa and many other areas of the work is still very limited). Details are at User:(WT-en) NJR ZA/osm2svg. Maybe we can share code/ideas to improve both efforts? --(WT-en) Nick 18:55, 6 May 2008 (EDT)

Svalbard Pages[edit]

Hi there, it seems like you are pretty much the only person on here who writes up the Svalbard articles? I was wondering if you would like to collaborate on expanding them, perhaps by adding some pictures and updating the Barentsburg and Ny Alesund articles.

Help please[edit]

Some anonymous user has gone and changed the Singapre money pic summary to say some thing that I need to get approval for it's use from the Monetary Authority. I am of the opinion that this being Wikivoyage it shouldn't really matter (the whole concept is sort of violated if we have to suck up to some bureaucrat for approval for everything) and they should get a user name or stop meddling. I will revert it now, if otherwise just say. (WT-en) Tarcus 02:48, 23 May 2008 (EDT)

Thanx for welcome but what do you mean by "deep links?"[edit]

Hi there,

Do you mean not to make too many links to visitkorea.or? Or do you mean not to make links to that site if it's already on the city page? Because there's a lot of good, relevant and up to date info on that site. I've been living here for a while and it's a good source I admittedly haven't used that much. However since I've started writing on this article I've found it to be incredibly helpful.

  • I did check out the external links section. In fact, I've gone through most of your "help" pages and your policy on Project:External Links say that I should link to official government sites or official tourist offices (if to a minimum) which http://www.visitkorea.or.kr is. Check out the domain.
  • Besides, at the moment I'm only working on the national page. Eventually I'll get working on the city pages where I will perhaps not need those links.
  • But what if that's the only place they have the information and I am able to place a direct link? Should I not refer to it? Or are you suggesting I omit information just so I can avoid making an external link?
  • By the way I also notice that some edits are done to the SKorean page however the history is not visible. For example the separate sections on the national page such as "Getting In/By boat." Why is that?
  • It is also stated in the external links page that links to non-English sites are not to be made. However there are many on the SKorean page. Should they not be removed?

Take a look at Project:How to create a map. (WT-en) Jpatokal 11:12, 9 June 2008 (EDT)

That looks good. I'll give it a go --(WT-en) Nick 01:57, 10 June 2008 (EDT)

External Links[edit]

You are giving me some contradictory information. Please clarify. On the second paragraph of your most recent response you say that, "Any important information should be right here in Wikivoyage, not behind an external link." There are hundreds of external links to very important information (tourist attractions, museums, district offices, tourist organization, etc.) that have not been written out on Wikivoyage's pages nor need they be and according to the guidelines is perfectly acceptable.

If an address is no longer valid then it is up to us Wikivoyagers to update it, right? Looks to me like Wikivoyage is mainly an online endeavor. And I find it unreasonable to ask contributors to write out redundant and tedious information that can best be explained with an external link. If it wasn't then the policy on external links would read: No External Links

Has it? Well, then I'm glad to be of help.

Normally when I look at the history for a certain section on an article, edit history shows up for that particular section. However when I checked the edit history for the "By Boat" under the "Getting In" section for SKorea it didn't go to that section nor did it show the changes. I don't know perhaps I'll need to go further back. That part always gives me trouble.(WT-en) Milo 03:01, 10 June 2008 (EDT)Hmmm. That's not my name. It's me, Paula.

Romanization[edit]

Wikivoyage:How to create a map[edit]

Hi, about a month ago or so wtp-maps was updated to use the settings from Config.mk instead of Makefile. At the same time you seem to have changed it to download the map data directly from OSM using something called a "border way", instead of using data from a data.osm file. What are border ways and do all cities have them? Is there a way to use data.osm instead?

Thanks. --(WT-en) Aqwis 11:02, 5 September 2008 (EDT)

Dokdo[edit]

I think in most part your edits say what I say but just differently. If you were unhappy about the length then fine, I will let you have your way with that.

I have also seen the mess at Wikipedia for Dokdo. I also am not interested in any edit war but you are the one who is insisting on an alternate version. I accept that rewrites are part of the Wikivoyage "philosophy" but do you? You are insisting on your version ONLY and not a compromise (which is what I was attempting). That means you are guilty of contradicting the site's whole premise. Unacceptable.

In addition, I have a responsibility to myself and to the readers when it comes to accuracy. The Japanese have no record of recognizing the islands as theirs nor are there any record of the Japanese legitamitely fishing there before the 19th century. Whereas Korea has records dating to the beginning of the 6th. Also, the island was not "called" Takeshima before 1905. That is when they named it thus. And finally, the island was NOT off-limits to the public there was just more paper work involved. If you're going to make edits, then the focus should be on accuracy moreso than length.

I will be writing several articles on Korea and probably other countries as I move on and will probably continue having discussions with you. However, if we cannot come to an agreement on how to proceed now then I believe we will continue to encounter the same difficulties. I would like to avoid that. If you by chance feel the same way then please respond as soon as possible.

edmonton wikivoyagepress[edit]

JPATOKAL, Okay, I looked through it and I am sure that it is all answered in there. But I have some questions about press. First of all, I am extremelyflattered, but does Edmonton really match up with Chicago, Singapore, Paris, and Cairo? Am I really that good? Also is it really hard to make them-doesn't seem like it. Gimme a timeframe. It seems I'll need to install a program, no? Is it a good program ( I am really picky what I sign up for ) and do I need it? Would I get a free copy, being the creator or something, that'd be awesome! DO I NEED to use my real name as the author...because I'm not comfortable with that, I prefer Edmontonenthusiast or something especially when this can be seen by more people (i.e.: one person gets it, then people look at it from that person, and it spreads!). It looks like it would look quite similar to the guide, no? Just with a book format. It seems like a pretty easy task...although not everyone can do it, because not every guide is up for that. Anyways, so the maps that've been created will go in the book, that'd be awesome (they're not mine!). Is it hard work? Will I need to get an account on press, or could you just put up the info or something...I'm not really comfortable with creating lots of accounts...sorry, I am like that. I don't need to ship anything, correct?, that's just you guys. I know I have a lot of questions but I don't want to miss anything. So I'd get paid for making a book...a teenager getting paid for making an online book...that's neat! Since you asked me and I gave you this, do i have to e-mail you, I am sorry, I'ts not really you, I am just not comfortable e-mailing people/things I don't know! Sorry for it all! How long did it take say Helsinki to make or something? Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 12:42, 15 November 2008 (EST).

Also I'd feel much more comfortable getting in touch with you or asking you questions here tan at the Press. Sorry! Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 12:46, 15 November 2008 (EST).

I also have the idea I wouldn't be very good...look at those reviews of Helsinki and Singapore! Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 13:02, 15 November 2008 (EST).

I also am wondering what is Yucca? I have recruited User:(WT-en) Shaund and User:(WT-en) Peterfitzgerald and User:(WT-en) Sertmann might for help. I'd probably be the main editor. Remember, I haven't said yes as I need to know the answer to my questions, what I'll need t osign up for, what information I have to give out. Also, I'd prefer not to contact via e-mail-think I said that. Sorry, I reallyy amm. I am also wondering if it is possible to not get any money from this-like if I decide I don't want any profits...is that ok, so I wouldn't have to give out any info, right? Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 17:11, 15 November 2008 (EST).

Left a comment to what you said. Now can you reply to all this? Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 23:30, 15 November 2008 (EST).

Also, how are the sales? Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 23:32, 15 November 2008 (EST).

Just in case it doesn't work out that I can't do it...I'd be happy for you to do it and help you in any way, since from the looks of it you've published most of them, or maybe it just doesn't say the other peoples. Regardless, it'd be fine with me. As much as I'd love to do this, if there is something I am very uncomfortable with, I really would prefer not doing it, even though I am so interested in. I hope I can, really, I am so excited over it! Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 00:37, 16 November 2008 (EST).

Yu ah Sutahr[edit]

You are a star! This is for your hard work and doing all the press stuff! Good work! Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 00:04, 17 November 2008 (EST).

Your writting[edit]

You do realise, you are quite harsh when you talk about people making mistakes-now I am no different in that sense, but I am trying to stop it-which I don't think you are. You could to give a heartwarming appology to me and Tapirlodge, as you have given us both harsh harsh comments like "you smoking crack" and in a subtle way, your word choice is a bit harsh in "Stop removing restaurants and hotels. It's not "publicity", this is a travel guide, we're supposed to have listings of places to eat and sleep. Even travel agencies are OK as long as they follow the guidelines in Tour. I've reverted your edits. Jpatokal 01:12, 22 November 2008 (EST)". I personally don't see it as that harsh, but people have said it is harsh, which it is kind of, I mean there is no politeness to this person you just met and just simply "ive reverted your edits" with a "half-assed" as you put it response to why they are doing bad. Sorry, but you really should do this as you've made us both mad. Not to mention, you (I didnt help much though), have made Tapirlodge want to stop helping with reverting spamming and touting, thank-you. You could at least help me and try and get him to rethink it. Really, dude, think about it. You wouldn't like it at all either, or, maybe you would, just because you can take it better, but I am sure people can think of stuff that would be equally as harsh. That's all. Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 22:56, 25 November 2008 (EST).

Not to mention, if someone else is on my side, which is rare here, I think that means you are totally wrong. Have fun not blowing sunshine up peoples asses, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 23:10, 25 November 2008 (EST).

Hi,

Hi Jpatokal, I have read some of your older posts on talk page of the article Bihar on wikipedia. Kindly understand what Piyush is trying to say. Cheers, (WT-en) Manoj nav 05:22, 4 December 2008 (EST)
Wikivoyage does not exist to sell Bihar, it's written for travelers. You are trying to diver the topic. Some of your edits reflects that you use wikivoyage to express your personal opinions and anger. (WT-en) Manoj nav 09:22, 4 December 2008 (EST)

Highway navigation box[edit]

Hi there. I have proposed a new sort of navigation box here. I would really appreciate your input. (WT-en) Texugo 06:45, 5 December 2008 (EST)

Hi again. I've implemented a test version for a certain region. I wonder if you'd have time to give it a whirl and comment. Details are here. Thanks! (WT-en) Texugo 09:25, 14 December 2008 (EST)

Argh! we both had that idea at the same time, and you saved first... tried to mix them as well as i could, but my apollogies of I inadvertedly deleted anything in your entry. Visitors center has been upgraded and renamed (as they allways seem to do) to Aqua Green Village in katakana. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 00:37, 7 December 2008 (EST)

Hakodate, Seishun 18 Kippu[edit]

Nope, it's not. Been there and almost made to pay for riding the Hakuchou despite having bought an extra tokkyuu surcharge ticket. Also, http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2362.html and various Japanese timetables reflect this. --(WT-en) FreakRob 18:31, 8 December 2008 (EST)

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. Maybe a "heads up" in the Hakodate travel guide might still be useful? --(WT-en) FreakRob 19:50, 9 December 2008 (EST)
Nope, I got controlled at the Kanita station when I went off the train into the waiting room there. But I didn't have to pay or anything, because frankly, I tried to be as much not understanding as I could and the guy quickly dropped it. --(WT-en) FreakRob 16:23, 11 December 2008 (EST)

Dali[edit]

No idea what happened there. (WT-en) Pashley 08:04, 10 December 2008 (EST)

Spam on zh[edit]

Hi Jani-san,

There are some accounts created by spammers. Can you help the Chinese version by doing speedy delete of spam pages and clipping those accouts ? And that version doesn't have spam black list. Can you make it work?

Thanks in advance. -- (WT-en) Tatata 22:57, 16 December 2008 (EST)

Thank you for your help. 謝謝! -- (WT-en) Tatata 01:46, 17 December 2008 (EST)
