Hello, Local hero! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here.

Thanks for hitting the ground running and making all those edits! You might want to look at Talk:Macedonia (country)#Cities for one of them, though. "Cities" lists except in bottom-level articles shouldn't be longer than 9, per this site's 7+2 policy.

Please keep contributing!

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:55, 13 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Usable

[edit]

Hi! First, thanks for your contribs to Macedonian articles. In the case you're wondering when a city can be rated "usable", it's very straightforward. The article needs four things: how to get in, at least one attraction, at least one place to eat and at least one place to sleep. "Guide" status, on the other hand, is rather loosely defined but a good rule of thumb is that everything the average traveler would need to know should be in the article. Got it, thanks! Local hero (talk) 20:09, 22 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Kudos!

What a great start on Prespa (Macedonia)! You've very quickly made yourself a valuable member of Wikivoyage! Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:52, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a lot! I'm definitely enjoying expanding Wikivoyage's coverage on some places in Macedonia. Local hero (talk) 03:47, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wikidata IDs

[edit]

Allow me to be the next person to thank you for your excelleng contributions to (North) Macedonian destinations! One tip/request: when adding listings with Wikipedia links, please click the "WP" button in the listing editor to import the Wikidata ID, or put the ID in directly, if you know how to find it. Having the ID enables syncing listing information with other wikis. This makes it easier to get some kinds of information, and allows us to send our own information back to other language editions and sister projects. Please let me know if you have any questions. Hello and thanks for this info. I was unaware of this but I'll try to make sure this gets imported in my future additions. Best. Local hero (talk) 21:27, 11 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Kokino

[edit]

Hello, LH! Per this edit of yours, do you plan to add Kokino to another article? While I am not sure how popular the site is, it seems to be very important archaeologically, and is listed at Prehistoric Europe, so it has to have a listing somewhere, with the relevant links adjusted. Vidimian (talk) 19:51, 11 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Vidimian, thanks for reaching out. I plan on adding Kokino to Staro Nagoričane (once I create it). However, I'm going thru each Macedonian municipality alphabetically (currently at Kumanovo) and it will take a while before I get there. So, I'll re-add Kokino to the Kumanovo article for now and then transfer it later. Thanks. Local hero (talk) 21:33, 11 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Got it, thank you. Vidimian (talk) 21:49, 11 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Macedonia guide articles?

[edit]

Hi. I was looking at our previous destination of the month and off the beaten path articles, to see if we'd ever featured any Macedonia articles. It turns out we haven't. Out of interest, are there any that you know of which have reached guide status already or are close to achieving that? Out of them, are there any which would make a particularly good destination to feature on the main page? Regards, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 14:47, 28 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @ThunderingTyphoons!:. I had actually been thinking about getting Prespa listed as an Off the Beaten Path destination and I think it could fulfill the guide status criteria. I think Kratovo and Kruševo could be good ones too. As far as Destination of the Month, Ohrid is the best destination in the country. Skopje is also worthy. I district-ified that article and I'm confident in those district articles but the main guide itself needs work. By the way, if you know a good wikivoyage map-maker, please let me know because I made the current one for Skopje and I think I did a lousy job lol. I think Prilep could work for OTBP or DOTM. I guess we'd first need to get these up to guide status. What are your thoughts on these? Local hero (talk) 15:11, 28 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Skopje might not take too much work, as on the face of it it's mostly a question of removing listings and/or migrating them to the districts; I can't really help with the map, unfortunately, except to point you to the Mapmaking Expedition. I assume a capital city would always be DOTM.
Prespa looks good, though it looks like it should be a rural article (a new category of article), rather than a city. Without knowing anything about the area, I think it could probably be a guide already and, assuming the content is up-to-date, could be featured as OTBP right away (not that it will be, you understand - it'll be at least a year).
The others need a bit more work:
  • Ohrid has way too many Sleep listings, and they're not organised very well. There should only be a maximum of 30-40, rather than 70, listings: that would be 5-9 listings per section (budget, mid-range, splurge, plus any other category that makes sense). The Eat section needs reordering, but otherwise that article has great potential.
  • The rest are all good up until halfway in, but all are lacking from Buy onwards.
So, yeah, I'd probably be happy to nominate Skopje or Prespa right away, not so much the others until they are improved a bit.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:01, 28 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Awesome! Let's go forward with Prespa and Skopje then. I can confirm that Prespa remains up-to-date. As you say, Skopje would take just a little work. Thanks for your assessment of these guides. I agree that the others are lacking in multiple sections as my contributions were mostly focused in the 'See' stuff. For Ohrid I think I could tidy up the Sleep and other sections so it's ready to go after we get Prespa and/or Skopje through the nomination process. Thanks. Local hero (talk) 02:53, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Realistically, it's going to be either/or, rather than both. There are only 12 slots a year for the whole world in DOTM and OTBP, so if Prespa were nominated now for a summer 2021 feature, say, then Skopje would need to wait until mid-2022 at the very earliest, and vice-versa. I'm happy to nominate one of those if you'd like to decide which one to take forward.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:41, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
The Balkan countries are definitely underrepresented among our featured articles – Sarajevo was featured last year as the very first article from the Balkans. The good news is that places in the Balkan generally has warm weather (we tend to run articles during months when the nighttime lows are +10°C or higher unless we specifically want to highlight the winter) and as such there are many slots available compared to e.g. the Nordic countries. But as TT said, there would be just one Macedonian article every year. Ypsilon (talk) 17:57, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Alright understood, makes sense. I'm sort of torn between the two, I guess I'd like to go with Prespa first. Local hero (talk) 00:24, 30 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello @ThunderingTyphoons!: Just wondering if you've had a chance to go forward with the nomination. If you don't have time, I could try to do it when I get a chance. Please let me know, thanks! Local hero (talk) 18:05, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hiya, I haven't done anything on that, but would still support a nomination for Prespa (or Skopje, or...). If you want to do that, it'll be done at DotM. All the best, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 19:24, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if it's my place to issue one of these since I'm new here, but I appreciate all the work you did on listings in North Macedonia. Honestly, I don't know how you kept all the churches and monasteries apart - you must have good notes or a photographic mind, I guessǃ Nicely done on the cross-country narration; I bet you're going to help a lot of people. Much appreciated @Lazarus1255:! Indeed it took a lot of time but I somehow managed to stay motivated haha. Best Local hero (talk) 14:55, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
