Getting lost in the details

I'm getting lost in the details of this edit. This is a travel guide, not Wikipedia. Please summarize the historical points that are most likely to interest a reader of a travel guide, not the minutiae of when the area was a county or a commandery (whatever that is - I've never heard of that word).
