Welcome

[edit]

Hello! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.

If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub.

I have deleted the article you created about your fictional country. Wikivoyage is a guide to real places only. After reading the links above, maybe you would like to contribute information about Dubai or other places near where you live. Ground Zero (talk) 02:18, 16 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

(: I didn't know Wikivoyagers were so warm and hospitable by welcoming people. Anyways no worries .... ): Shirazian (talk) 14:03, 21 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Copying from Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi, Shirazian. I appreciate your helpful attitude in starting an article about Norman Manley International Airport, but I'd like you to please read Wikipedia and Wikivoyage:Copyleft. There are two things to consider in regard to verbatim copying from Wikipedia articles: (1) If you do that (or, really, even if you paraphrase or summarize from them), you must cite your source in an edit summary, which you'll type in the "Summary" box under your edit screen. (2) Encyclopedias and travel guides have different styles and are different in scope and emphasis. So think about which facts about an airport or Jamaica's civil aviation industry are relevant to the experience of current travelers before quoting such facts. Also, at least delete the footnote numbers, please. Thanks a lot.

Best,

Your edits

[edit]

Hi. I'd like a reassurance that you're operating in good faith, please, because you are making edits out of keeping with all kinds of Wikivoyage guidelines. This is a Wiki, so it runs based on procedures that have been agreed upon by a consensus that already existed for a long time before you became a member. Of course that doesn't mean you couldn't suggest for things to be changed, but you can't do things like unilaterally promoting an article to Star status. Some of your other violations are more understandable, as, for example, articles about countries (in this case, Jamaica) aren't appropriate places to put specific lists of hotels and resorts (see Wikivoyage:Country article template), but did you copy and paste that list from somewhere, violating copyright again? I'd like you to please slow down in your edits and reassure us that your aim here is to improve the site, as part of a consensus. If so, we'll be happy to continue letting you know when you do something you didn't know was irregular, and give you references for the relevant page when applicable. If not, we have to consider other options.

Best,

Michael

Blocking

[edit]

I've been blocked by @User:Ibaman and can't edit any pages. Shirazian (talk) 21:08, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yet it never occurred to you to respond to the multiple messages on your Talk Page that led up to your being blocked? Seriously? -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 22:09, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
And Shirazian, you can still give us reassurances of your intentions on this page, so please do, and then we can consider unblocking your posting privileges. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:25, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I want to be unblocked. My edits weren't fake or false. The one concerning Hotels in Jamaica weren't copied, they are all true. I used a Jamaican Magazine with lists of hotels and I'm accociated with this country because my mother is Jamaican and father is Arabian. This may seem like I'm giving personal information but I'm not, it's just true. User:Shirazian (talk 6:44, 17 August 2017
Personal information isn't the issue. The issue is twofold: First, there shouldn't be any lists of hotels in a country article, but secondly, did you just say you copied them from a magazine? Is that in keeping with this site's policy on copyright? Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:47, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
yes that's right. Copying from a magazine isn't an issue. The name of this site is Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. I wanted to help plunging forward the Jamaican page by adding some hotels as I see in many other country's articles —The preceding comment was added by Shirazian (talkcontribs)
First of all, this is not Wikipedia, but secondly, on both Wikipedia and Wikivoyage, copyright violation is unacceptable, as you would see if you followed the link I had given you. So if you would like to continue to disregard it, in order to protect it, we will have to block your posting privileges for longer periods until you get it, or if necessary, indefinitely. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:54, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your correction. Don't block my edits, I will follow wikivoyage's rules. Thank you for telling me what I haven't know about Wikivoyage and things that'll help me in upcoming edits. —The preceding comment was added by Shirazian (talkcontribs)
Your block was for only 2 hours and has already elapsed. Please continue to read posts to your user talk page, and respond when appropriate. Thanks. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:03, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Shirizian, hotels belong in the city/town articles, not in the Jamaica article. If you could identify country articles with hotels in them, then we can clean them up - they shouldn't be there.

There are hundreds of hotels in Jamaica, and if we listed them all in the country article, along with thousands of restaurants and hundreds of things to see or do, the article would be too long for anyone to read. It would be a mess. Please put them in the city or town articles, and use your own words instead of someone else's. That way your contributions will be in the right places, and won't violate policies that we have to follow. Thanks. Ground Zero (talk) 00:21, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Also, we don't link every place name just because we can. We link places to help people find information about their next possible destination. Readers aren't going to a list of countries whose citizens do or don't need visas to find their next destination - they are looking to see whether they need a visa. The links just add unnecessary clutter. Ground Zero (talk) 13:08, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Shirazian: The talk page you've been granted here is the only talk page you'll get. Refer to the deletion notes on that page: "User Talk pages are to be located in the User_talk namespace". If you don't like that it is used already and that many of the comments there are tips on how to improve your editing, then simply don't look at them. By creating a "user page" outside of the User_talk namespace you only complicate the system for others.

  • I thought Wikivoyage was welcoming but it's not. I've been offended here and I'm planning on logging out. I didn't expect this here.
  • You should not expect to come into a Wiki and dictate how or where you will or will not edit, what rules and policies you will or will not comply, you know. Ibaman (talk) 16:58, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Shirizian: it is unfortunate that you are taking offence. I and others have tried to steer you towards contributing constructively to Wikivoyage. Like any community, there are rules to make sure that everyone is getting along, and that the overall vision is achieved. If you are only interested in editing on your own terms and are unwilling to accept the community's rules, then you would be better off setting up your own webpage. MySpace and WordPress are places where you can do that. If you want to work with us to build a free travel guide, we would welcome your help. Ground Zero (talk) 17:26, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Alternatively, if it's your way or the highway, happy trails. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:26, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
