Welcome

[edit]

Hello Tailsultimatefan3891! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.

If you are a Wikipedian then you may notice some differences in policies and the style of our articles. These include:

It may also be very useful for you to check out Wikivoyage:Welcome, Wikipedians. If you need help, take a look at Wikivoyage:Help, or else post a message in the travellers' pub or on my talk page. Thanks for contributing!

Probably the biggest difference between Wikivoyage and Wikipedia has to do with goals and tone. There are a lot of facts that are important to mention in detail in an encyclopedia but that might not be interesting to prospective or current travelers to a particular place, like the order in which states acceded to the Union in the U.S. or exactly what date that happened. Egypt being the most populous country in the Arab World or the Middle East seems like the kind of background information that should be in Egypt#Understand but probably not in Middle East, where it's not a reason to travel to the country. Anyway, carry on, and thanks again!

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:55, 26 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for frequent reverts to my contributions, especially in disambig pages. Very sorry. Should I follow those policies next time. Tailsultimatefan3891 (talk) 21:30, 26 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Not a problem! We don't expect new users to know Wikivoyage policies. All of us were new users at some point. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:49, 26 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek: Thanks for your reply :) Tailsultimatefan3891 (talk) 00:08, 27 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Creating templates

[edit]

Hi. I don't really understand why you are creating a bunch of templates, but please pause and read Wikivoyage:Using MediaWiki templates#New MediaWiki template proposals. We prefer to keep the learning curve for new users here lower than on Wikipedia, so we don't want unnecessary templates and therefore encourage users to concentrate more on adding, updating or editing content than on copying loads of templates from Wikipedia or creating new ones. You've added so many so quickly, and the need for them is so non-obvious to me that I'm tempted to nominate them all for deletion, but if you want to stave that off, try following the directions at Wikivoyage:Using MediaWiki templates#Usage documentation - but I probably don't have to tell you how to do that, since you are apparently very experienced with these things. Just keep in mind, the default here traditionally has been to delete unnecessary templates.

I'm also just curious: what is most interesting to you about this travel guide that you want to work on, that motivated you to start editing here? Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:29, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Why did you ignore Ikan's message and create {{tlsc}}? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 12:07, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek, SHB2000: Sorry, I should not continue these kinds of templates again. Don't just block me yet. I am working on Test Wikipedia. Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 12:08, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
I guess I have to spell it out: stop creating or copying templates here. Edit content, period. You are creating unnecessary distractions. You know how this will end if you keep it up. Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:44, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek: I think I will stop with the distractions and keep it up creating the content. I think it wasn't so serious. Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 11:07, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Learn Wikivoyage policies and guidelines before acting like an admin

[edit]

I'll just let this edit summary speak for itself. Again: please edit content. You are not helping out by acting as if you are an admin while knowing nothing about Wikivoyage policies and guidelines and posting out of turn. Thanks. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:40, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Ikan Kekek: Sorry, I'll be there to edit on Test Wikipedia and understand this too. Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 12:23, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
testwiki, test2wiki, and testwikidata are designed for testing major scripts or doing things in your personal sandbox in order to test that you won't be breaking anything. It's not a wiki where you can go on a template-creating spree nor is it a haven for copyvios. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 12:27, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
See , , , , , , , and . Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 12:30, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Do you think I don't know what I'm talking about? My point stands. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 12:42, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: Wikivoyage is a wiki about a travel guide. Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 13:06, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
That's beside the point; I already know that. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 11:09, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: OK, and should I edit my userspace sandbox. Thanks. Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 11:11, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
My point was that you cannot go creating useless templates and copyvios on testwiki in response to "I'll be there to edit on Test Wikipedia and understand this too". SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 11:19, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

You're reverting people's comments on talk pages now?

[edit]

Explain this now. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:07, 30 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

This is your final warning. Talk pages should never be removed without a valid reason. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 02:11, 30 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek, SHB2000: Sorry, as long as it's not my final warning, should I take a break from the wiki? Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 12:06, 30 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
I think that could be a wise move, if you otherwise cannot keep your hands off administrative tasks. A better route would be to start writing about places you know about. Don't add text from Wikipedia, though, but try to remember what good restaurants you visited, where you slept and what activities you appreciated, check whether there is a lack of listings in the cities/parks/whatever, and whether you can find details such as URLs and phone numbers. Then add those listings with suitable commentary on your experiences (check some star articles, such as Farnborough, for style). That is activity that is valued over here. –LPfi (talk) 13:14, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@LPfi: I think yeah. Maybe Warsaw as well? Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 23:33, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Depending on what you know about the city. I wouldn't recommend armchair research about regions you don't know. Better to keep to places you have visited, at least to start with. –LPfi (talk) 08:17, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@LPfi: As long as we edit content, should we not get the other admins involved in this? Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 11:05, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
If you just edit content (and are a bit keen-eared if there are conflicts), there is probably no need for admin intervention. –LPfi (talk) 11:24, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Welcoming users

[edit]

Why did you welcome this user who hasn't edited since July 30? Anyway, you should try and have a longer track record before welcoming new users. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 02:13, 30 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Oh, OK. Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 23:35, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the thanks, but...

[edit]

can you not spam the thank button eight times in one minute? It's super annoying and a misuse of the thank button. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 06:01, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sorry and I accidentally did this. I will not do this again. Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 23:36, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Change name request (Tailsultimatefan3891)

[edit]
Swept in from the pub

Hi. Can you rename my username to "GreatFrogFan78". Thanks. Tailsultimatefan3891 (talk) 21:39, 26 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please see m:Changing username. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:47, 26 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
OK, Thanks for your reply. Tailsultimatefan3891 (talk) 00:27, 27 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Renames aren't handled locally here. Please make a request on m:SRUC if you want to change your name, but a warning that your Wikipedia block may be a hinderance. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 06:54, 27 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: Thanks for giving me a warning. My first request was declined due to a block on English Wikipedia. Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 02:31, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Tailsultimatefan3891: tbh I don't really understand the downsides for why they won't, but it's sadly just the way it is :-(. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 02:57, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000 Because changing a username can be perceived as dodging accountability. When a username is changed, unless someone is following closely, you assumed that a "new name" showing up on the scene is a new user, not a problematic user who returned under a new name. OhanaUnitedTalk page 03:48, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@OhanaUnited: that makes sense. I usually check the logs, but a first impression always matters. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 05:38, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Could you semi-protect my user page so only autoconfirmed users can edit it? Tailsultimatefan3891 (t | c | ca) 12:27, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
