Welcome[edit]

Wow! Thanks for all your contributions to Turkey. I guess we're a little late with the official welcome, but here goes:

Hello Vidimian! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to ask. -- (WT-en) OldPine 19:55, 12 February 2008 (EST)

Thank you. I've been reading Wikivoyage for a long time but I've recently started writing seriously. I guess I can find out how to do but thanks for your suggestions anyway.--(WT-en) Vidimian 20:38, 12 February 2008 (EST)

Great work on Turkey, keep it up! I look forward to using it in July. (WT-en) Jpatokal 07:58, 26 March 2008 (EDT)
Thank you. I hope you'll find it useful and enjoy your trip. --(WT-en) Vidimian 08:01, 26 March 2008 (EDT)

Thanks![edit]

Thanks for all of your cleanups and updates to add Template:isPartOf and WikiPedia links. One tip - Template:isPartOf is preferred to Template:isIn since it doesn't require any escaping, meaning that something like {{isPartOf|South (United States of America)}} is totally valid. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 20:44, 19 February 2009 (EST)

No problem! I just happen to have some free time. I prefer isin over ispartof just because it's shorter and quicker to type, but I'll try to use ispartof more often from now on.--(WT-en) Vidimian 20:48, 19 February 2009 (EST)

Central Anatolia borders[edit]

If we need to define the borders more clearly for Central Anatolia before getting the map finished, then lets do so! Is there a discussion started already? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:16, 23 March 2009 (EDT)

There will be one in a minute or two. I need some time to put it clearly in English.--(WT-en) Vidimian 00:54, 23 March 2009 (EDT)
Discussion is here.--(WT-en) Vidimian 01:28, 23 March 2009 (EDT)

Turkey regions map[edit]

Hey, I finally finished that regions map for Turkey! Do you have any suggestions for improvements? Roads to be added/removed, cities that should be displayed, etc. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:43, 8 June 2009 (EDT)

I think it's pretty much OK. I especially liked your selection of "other destinations" - may Ephesus and Pamukkale added as other destinations too if they won't clutter the map? D400 -the highway running along the Med coast- may also be added, it possesses some touristical importance and right now it looks like there is no major highway along the length of a third of that coast. Just adding a line along the coast would do that fine. And there is a typo at Doğebeyazıt - it should be Doğubeyazıt.--(WT-en) Vidimian 04:59, 8 June 2009 (EDT)
Added and fixed. Let me know if you have any other suggestions/critiques! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 05:21, 8 June 2009 (EDT)

Bangkok[edit]

Thanks a lot for listingifying at Bangkok/Sukhumvit! It is much appreciated :) --(WT-en) globe-trotter 19:34, 5 February 2010 (EST)

No problem! I'll do some more throughout the month.—(WT-en) Vidimian 20:15, 5 February 2010 (EST)
Again thanks! Only Sukhumvit and Silom left :) --(WT-en) globe-trotter 19:07, 14 February 2010 (EST)
Yes, I've noticed that. You are so quick that I'd like to listingify a few more listings before you went through the rest—that was the reason why I did a bunch more tonight :) —(WT-en) Vidimian 19:43, 14 February 2010 (EST)

Regions[edit]

I wanted to say thank you very much for all your help with regionalisation discussion and implementation, particularly for southeastern Europe. Absolutely invaluable. You are probably aware of our mission to conquer the world :), and you will see that after the recent push, there is very little left to do in Europe. Indeed, there is relatively little left to do period, and the end is in sight for what was a truly mammoth task. Your help is especially appreciated in this field, as there are few Wikivoyagers willing to to do the rather unglamorous region-related work.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 09:29, 27 April 2010 (EDT)

It is a pleasure for me to help on regionalizing work :). Yes, I am well aware of the expedition, and in fact I've tried to do a couple of Turkish regions maps (not really related to this particular "conquering the world" project at the moment) but just couldn't figure out how to use Inkscape in the end, so I guess I won't be able to help with actual drawing of the maps, at least in a foreseeable future. As to what I can do/have done to help the expedition, as you possibly have already noticed, I try to join discussions on regionalizing whenever I spot them on recent changes or the expedition page (so those "see discussion" links next to the country names are really useful!) if I feel like joining the discussion; and I try to clean up country articles after the regionalization is implemented (descriptions, moves, redirects, breadcrumbs etc). Is there any particular discussion or particular regionalization work I can help at the moment? – (WT-en) Vidimian 09:51, 27 April 2010 (EDT)
As for discussion, I think we are almost there, bar for small islands.
  • Two major countries which may still present some issues are Portugal (been a problem child for a long time) and Panama (I think there are too many proposed regions - they outnumber the city articles).
  • Guatemala is a major outstanding country - the regions seem sensible but I have no idea where the borders should be set. Additionally the country article is in a bit of a state.
  • I have just finished Slovakia and I am sure the regions could use some better descriptions etc....--(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:35, 27 April 2010 (EDT)
I have pushed on with the Bosnia map as per Stefan's scheme at Talk:Bosnia and Herzegovina#Regions, and ought to have it finished within a day or 2. If you wanted to start the regionalisation work as per that scheme, then the timing would be excellent. I will chip in as well of course but help would be much appreciated. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 00:59, 3 May 2010 (EDT)
OK, I am starting right away. – (WT-en) Vidimian 05:18, 3 May 2010 (EDT)
Great stuff and thanks very much. Map is now added to the article. Works well I think.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:23, 3 May 2010 (EDT)
Yes, the map is great! Cheers. – (WT-en) Vidimian 14:38, 3 May 2010 (EDT)

Türkçe Wikivoyage Çevirisi[edit]

Eğer mümkünse Türkçe Wikivoyage sayfasının nasıl açılacağını bana izah edebilir misiniz?Ben Türkçe kodlama sürümünün çevirisini yaptım, tabi bazı ufak tefek hatalarla. http://shared.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Turkish_Wikivoyage_Expedition Sanırım bu sayfa yardımcı olacaktır. (WT-en) Hasan 11:48, 8 May 2010 (EDT)hasan_travel

– (WT-en) Vidimian 12:59, 8 May 2010 (EDT)

reverting[edit]

Merhaba! You can do hard reverts too. You only need to go to the page history and select the version you would like to revert to compared to the current version. Press view and then simply double click on that version. There will be a warning that you are saving an outdated version but that's the version then you want to. Please write hard revert i the summary so that others are aware you undo several changes. Regards, (WT-en) jan 08:09, 14 May 2010 (EDT)

Guten Tag! Well, I wasn't aware of this feature, thanks for pointing it out. I'll try that next time I have a need for it. – (WT-en) Vidimian 08:15, 14 May 2010 (EDT)

Poland[edit]

I know you like helping with this sort of thing :). I am doing a proper map for Poland (richly deserved) and am finding all sorts of articles which are more or less orphaned. A lot have come as being in the vovoidship article but not the region. I suspect few users look at the low level vovoidships, so these are close to being orphaned. I have a found a lot and am putting that right but I am sure there are more! This also means we can now have some ODs listed in the main country article - there were none. That was sad to see for country with such amazing National Parks. The map is coming together really well and will look good I think.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 08:17, 15 May 2010 (EDT)

The new map looks great, especially compared with the old one that I remember seeing, but I wish that non-contiguous "Eastern" region could be reshaped into a region with better defined borders in the process, though no big deal really. I'll take a quick look to what I can see at the moment, but due to a trip early in the tomorrow morning (and preparations thereof), I'll be offline in the coming few days, but I'll be glad to help when I return. Just for the record, these vfd'd articles can be really helpful: National Parks in Poland, Poland:Mountains, Poland:UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Poland:Spas, Poland:Lakes and Coastlines. – (WT-en) Vidimian 14:48, 16 May 2010 (EDT)
Oh my. This proves to be harder than I initially thought. And most subregions have up to 9 cities anyway, which means we shouldn't really be moving cities from them to a region one level up in the hierarchy, so is there any better solution short of creating full sets of sub-sub-regions for unknown and far away lands? – (WT-en) Vidimian 16:14, 16 May 2010 (EDT)
OK, I checked all subregions (voivodships) and their subarticles (if exist), and, as far as national parks are concerned, all are listed in the highest level regions of Poland, so a big applause to you! As I can see from a quick look, some subregions and possibly many city and OD articles need their breadcrumbs fixed though, I'll try to take care of them when I have more time. – (WT-en) Vidimian 16:32, 16 May 2010 (EDT)

Patrolling[edit]

Hi, thank you for helping patrolling, it appears that you patrol one edit at a time, which of course is ok, but you might find it easier to use Enhanced recent changes (preferences -> recent changes), --(WT-en) ClausHansen 11:15, 5 June 2010 (EDT)

Hi. Yes, I patrol one edit at a time, I somehow found it easier (and more managable) than patrolling all the edits done by a user once—which I gave a try sometime in the past—for some reason I can't remember at the moment, but thanks for pointing out anyway. – (WT-en) Vidimian 15:12, 5 June 2010 (EDT)

Flemish[edit]

You're right, Flemish is not a language, the only official language of Flanders in Dutch. But the Dutch in Flanders is pronounced differently, that's why Flemish people tend to call it "Flemish". However, you're right that we dont have to complicate readers with these linguistic details. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 07:17, 19 June 2010 (EDT)

Yes, I've made that change after taking a look at relevant Wikipedia articles (plus, it would be silly and potentially confusing to have one "Flemish" in the article while throughout the article elsewhere it is referred to as "Dutch"). What would you think about having a sole mention of "Flemish" in Flanders#Talk, such as "... is Dutch, locally called Flemish...", would it be helpful for travellers or would it be needless hairsplitting? Having such a mention may preempt possible future edit wars based on linguistic (over)sensitivities. – (WT-en) Vidimian 07:28, 19 June 2010 (EDT)
I think we should just refer to it as Dutch, and maybe give a concise explanation of the pronunciation differences with the Dutch used in the Netherlands. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 09:53, 19 June 2010 (EDT)

Muju[edit]

Thanks for cleaning up my Muju article - sorry if this is super obvious, but given that that was my first article, I don't know all the style rules just yet. When are outside links acceptable? ie, why the removal of the sobaek mountains/universiade links that went to wikipedia? (not that I'm upset - just trying to figure out how to make cleaner articles in the future!) —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) EdMuju (talkcontribs)

No worries. You can read the policy on what external links are allowed in this page. In short, information should be at the Wikivoyage articles (as long as they are travel-related), rather than hidden behind a link, because one of the goals of Wikivoyage is to be helpful to travellers as a printout—just names and links with no further explanation would certainly not be very helpful then. – (WT-en) Vidimian 03:02, 21 June 2010 (EDT)

Thanks (2)[edit]

Offline discussion[edit]

I'd like to add you to an ongoing Google Wave discussion relevant for admins, but would need to reach you by email. To preserve your anonymity, you could create an ad hoc email account, associate it with your Wikivoyage account, and then email me. I will reply to that email with a Google Wave invitation, for which you can also create an ad hoc @googlewave.com account, to continue to preserve your anonymity. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 08:54, 8 July 2010 (EDT)

Prague Districts[edit]

Hello Vidimian, I am just wondering why you replaced my contribution 'elf hostel' to a prague 3 page, but left all sorts of other places to stay on the main page. Is it a work in progress maybe? --(WT-en) Faust 06:49, 22 July 2010 (EDT)

Blackouts in Albania[edit]

Just for information, there are no blackouts in Albania since 2007. In fact, we export energy to Greece during winter. Thank you! —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) AM-TR (talkcontribs) 07:44, 30 August 2010

St John's Newfoundland travel page - do not add Fairmont[edit]

Hello -

I had deleted the Fairmont hotel from the St John's, Newfoundland wikivoyage page. I see that following then, you went in and reverted the page to as it was previously, with the Fairmont included.

The reason I deleted the Fairmont is it no longer exists - it has been converted into the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland.

Please refrain from adding the Fairmont back to this wikivoyage page.

Thank you.

Jason

Ah, OK, that makes sense. If you would have noted that in the edit summary box below the editing window, I wouldn't re-add that. Just for the record, something like "closed listing removed" would do, if you need to remove another listing in the future. We usually have touts and SEOs of hotels coming to Wikivoyage with their IP numbers and removing their competitors' listings and I thought that might be such a case. – (WT-en) Vidimian 11:00, 30 August 2010 (EDT)

Odd behaviour of new listing[edit]

Hi, I was a bit surprised to find that after adding a listing to the Istanbul/Galata Eat section, it disappeared, only to be present in the history section. How odd! Looking through the bug reports, it looked to me as though it may be a recurrent problem after an admin edits a template. Do you agree? (WT-en) Maxpax 01:34, 5 November 2010 (EDT) Thanks for your helpful reply. (WT-en) Maxpax 03:22, 6 November 2010 (EDT)

If you do not mind and object to me editing, in this case Eskişehir, which I rarely do because I only contribute if I know the subject well or if I have updates avialble – in this case about climates.[edit]

The previous anonymous user did the wrong thing by simply erasing part of the climate section of Eskişehir, which looks like vandalism.

If you do not mind and object to me editing, which I do rarely because I only contribute (very infrequently) if I know the subject well or if I have updates avialble – in this case about climates.

The phenomenon of winter rain is false because it is not a feature of the climate of Eskişehir or indeed most of the interior and high Anatolian plateau, it also not a feature of Istanbul or the Blcak Sea coast for that matter. This is only restricted to those places in Turkey which do have a mediterranean climate . During winter, precipitation is mostly in the form of snow (I live there ve Türkçe konuşabiliyorum), because Eskişehir despite being in western Turkey, has a slightly harsher winter and indeed slightly drier climate than Ankara to its east. This is due to to its topography apart from its altitude.

Kindest regards

MarcoPolo

Thank you for your assistance with Gabrovo[edit]

Thank you for your assistance with the Gabrovo, Bulgaria, entry. However, I am pulling the article for the moment owing becuase to trouble with my user name. I have saved the HTML version of the Gabrovo entry in a text file on my computer, so the work is not lost. However, I made an error when I registered as "NatureParkBulgarka." I am an American Peace Corps Volunteer working at Nature Park Bulgarka, but I should have registered as "RoberttSullivan1973", my usual handle under these circumstances. Any assistance you can provide will be appreciated. (WT-en) NatureParkBulgarka 09:20, 28 December 2010 (EST)

Bulgarka[edit]

Vidimian, at your earliest convenience, please read the Bulgarka entry again. I am interested in any guidance you have to offer on how the article may be improved enough to be nominated for "Off the Beaten Path." (WT-en) RobertSullivan1973 02:24, 13 January 2011 (EST)

Arbitration request[edit]

I'm sorry to bug you with this, but could you please take a look at the Daejeon article is you have a moment? I'm hoping I'm requesting this in the right way. There's an issue there with User:(WT-en) Felix505 initiating an edit war and I'd much rather call in third-party abritration than play along. I felt the need to revert a portion of his intial edits as they changed the article from correct to incorrect in more than a few places. Other edits were petty, right down to the old English vs American English chestnut. Regardless, he has since re-reverted those and taken now to reverting the revisions and any further work or additions to the page. Attempts to discuss this civilly with him have unfortunately failed. Please see his talk page for the discussion (I realise parts of that discussion should really be on the article talk page, and I guess parts will have to be moved over once things are settled - my bad on that :/)

I've included a comment on the Discussion page for the article listing some of the most recent edits. For the record, I actually live in the city at present (short term stay) and it's clear to me at least from the edits he has not ever been there (I'm actually going to suspect he has not visited the country itself given a comment about the country's national public transport links). Anyhow, the last accurate version of the page, in my opinion, is this: http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Daejeon&oldid=1635833

Sorry about dumping this one on you. Also, I never did thank you before, but cheers for the warm welcome message back way when I signed up! :) —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Snave (talkcontribs)

No worries, I'm right on my way checking that out (and I see (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus already gave a shot at Talk:Daejeon), but I'll need to go through the versions and those lengthy discussions first. I'll too reply at Talk:Daejeon.

Kabak/Aphrodisias/Bergama[edit]

Hey V, just wanted to see what you thought about

  • My edits after describing the tourism development in Kabak in more general terms. I took out the negative references, but should I also take out the positive ones too, to be more balanced?
  • I made a new article on Aphrodisias, since there was nothing there before. How does it look?
  • I've made some extensive edits on Bergama. How are those?

Please, be as critical as possible, since I am still relatively new at this. --(WT-en) Intheback 03:23, 1 July 2011 (EDT)

I've been busy with real life stuff lately, but I will try and have a through read of all those articles in a few days' time. Sorry, for putting the two different terminologies regarding Eastern Christianity in the country quickbar of Turkey.[edit]

Sorry, for putting the two different terminologies regarding Eastern Christianity in the country quickbar of Turkey. Eastern Rite is indeed the correct name, for the different (and independent) sects of Eastern Christianity. While I was clarifying the actual religious makeup of the Christians in the country, I certainly did not intend to confuse the readers even more. (Unfortunately for the readers, some of non-Eastern Orthodox churches such as the Syriac and Coptic churches use the term "Orthodox".) Again sorry.

Flyax's opinion on Baklahorani song[edit]

Flyax enjoyed the song, and when I asked him about the two Greek lines that are supposedy in the Turkish lyrics, he thought they were Turkish because he thought he heard the word kemanlar (violins). Username + password[edit]

Hello Vidiaman, I am the user Faust 1976, however, I have forgotten my password and my password and in fact, the email address I used to become a member (I have a couple, initially used for separate purposes, but later I got less tidy in that). Is it possible to get me a login again, so that I may request some further assistance in the name of privacy? Please leave me a rely here, preferably with a way to contact you so that we might discuss some details privately? Thanks in advance.--81.68.73.34 16:16, 18 March 2012 (EDT)

Hi Faust. I'm sorry that I can't help you with this — I've been scanning various help pages for the last half an hour and couldn't come up with something that could help you. We have two active bureaucrats (User:(WT-en) Wrh2 and User:(WT-en) Peterfitzgerald) and at least one sysop (User:(WT-en) LtPowers) who is extremely experienced in Mediawiki who may or may not be able to help you. If you need to access me through e-mail, first get another account (perhaps a throw away one), register an e-mail with it (no one will see it, don't worry) and then you will see a link saying "E-mail this user" on the toolbox to the end of the left navigation bar when you look at my user or talk page. By clicking it, you can send an e-mail to me, but please notify me here when you do, as I don't check my e-mail very often. – (WT-en) Vidimian 03:30, 19 March 2012 (EDT)

Thanks for the idea Vidiaman. I will email Wrh2 with my request, since a second request would involve him anyway (I wanted to contact him at first, but without a means to log in I could not edit his page, nor send him an email. It never occured to me hat I would be able to do so with an account.). Should he be unresponsive, I might knock on your door again. Thanks again! --(WT-en) ThrowAwayOne 08:39, 19 March 2012 (EDT)

Okay; glad to be of help (if any at all). – (WT-en) Vidimian 14:47, 19 March 2012 (EDT)
I've responded via email to the user. Beyond what has been suggested in Project:Travellers' pub#Password there isn't a way for a bureaucrat to fulfill the user's multiple requests. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 14:53, 19 March 2012 (EDT)
Oh, okay. Thanks for the link to the pub discussion. I somehow failed to see that "E-mail password" button on Special:Userlogin at the first time I was checking it. I left a note on Project:How to create a user account that lost passwords are not possible to recover just in case — changes to wording or possibly a better help page to note it are welcome. – (WT-en) Vidimian 16:16, 19 March 2012 (EDT)
