The Rail Expedition is an expedition to improve our coverage on all forms of passenger rail travel, be they heritage railways or high speed rail, the shortest urban rail systems or the Trans Siberian Railway.

Short term Goals[edit]

  • Add metro maps to the dynamic maps of cities or at least svg. based network plans
  • Add markers for the intercity train stations (lots of them have wikipedia articles, so the Wikidata link does a lot of the heavy lifting, for those that do not, use Openstreetmap or other maps to get coordinates)
  • Improve the coverage of "rail travel in x" either by improving the "by train" sections or by spinning of "rail travel in x" articles
  • Remove third party links and whenever possible give information equal to or better than the replaced link

Long term Goals[edit]

  • Turn Wikivoyage into the first reference for voyagers who prefer rail
  • Catch up with an surpass other guides, particularly Seat 61 (already the case for some countries and regions)
  • Have a map for every light and heavy urban rail system integrated into all dynamic maps; work together with Wikidata and Openstreetmap to keep them virtually self-updating
  • Make railroads great again

Article ideas and requests[edit]

Do we want more itineraries for travel by rail? I know of some named passenger rail lines in the USA and Canada that don't yet have itineraries: Amtrak's "City of New Orleans" (Chicago/Memphis/New Orleans), "Coast Starlight" (Seattle/Los Angeles), and "Maple Leaf" (NYC/Toronto), and VIA's "The Ocean" (Montreal/Halifax). --Robkelk (talk) 16:07, 5 July 2018 (UTC) There's also VIA's Winnipeg/Churchill run, but those tracks have been washed out for over a year. The Canadian government has ordered they be repaired or sold to someone who will repair them, though, so this itinerary might still be worthwhile. --Robkelk (talk) 21:16, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
