Talk:Angle Inlet
City or rural area?
[edit]- Swept in from the pub
Angle Inlet is an outlinecity. I'd changed the tag to usableruralarea, but suspect I should change it back for a couple of reasons:
- The policy is contradictory on what's a city and what's not. Wikivoyage:Rural area article template says "If an area like Prince Edward County is not further subdivided into towns with individual articles, its page is a "rural area" city-level article here." but Wikivoyage:Small city article template says "If an area like Prince Edward County is not further subdivided into towns with individual articles, its page is a city-level article here." So who do I believe?
- I don't have enough listings to fill every section. The one establishment listed under "Drink", when I try the number, just gives me a recording saying it's been disconnected. A search engine finds nothing relevant other than the Wikivoyage article or an outdated (2015-era) copy of the same text on another rival site.
It's tempting to create a Paris-sized city with 119 arrondissements, one for each resident of this tiny place, but there's only so much I can do with a destination like this. How does one even get there? Q788771 (talk) 17:52, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
- In this case, I think you should ignore Wikivoyage:Small city article template, as it was last updated before Wikivoyage:Rural area article template was created. Wikivoyage:Small city article template needs to be updated to reflect the existence of Rural areas. Angle Inlet looks to be a rural area. AlasdairW (talk) 22:11, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Q88771: Accordingly, Wikivoyage:Small city article template has been updated. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 13:39, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
A few factual issues
[edit]- The number listed for the schoolhouse (+1 218 455-6198) belongs to a church just across the North Dakota border, so nowhere near the Northwest Angle.
- The number listed for the golf course (+1 218 223-4161) belongs to the school. The golf club is owned by an elderly couple, and looks to still be usable (even if often operating unattended), but there's no phone in the club house. No idea if the cart rental or the sale of balls or clubs is still available if this is barely functional?
- The only mobile phone signal actually based on the Angle looks to be Verizon; the other majors are only on the "mainland" so coverage will be limited to non-extant.
- Dropping an anchor in Canadian waters is entry to Canada (and therefore a border control problem) but is dropping a fishing line still likely to trigger an international incident? More importantly, does it trigger all of the COVID restrictions for entry to Canada? I'm seeing conflicting media reports these last few months, although Canada's restrictions on this have been a thorn in the side of US border politicians for years.
- There is a social media "topic" (probably Facebook? facebook.com/groups/126185504207582/) specifically for the people of the Northwest Angle, who are known as anglers. Apparently as of a few weeks ago, the latest arbitrary restriction was that US live bait couldn't be used to catch Canadian fish - only Canadian bait or fake bait was being permitted. Is there a reliable source to confirm this latest silliness?

- It looks like it's not Verizon-only anymore: AT&T became available in Nov, per https://www.grandforksherald.com/news/new-angle-inlet-cell-site-to-provide-first-responders-residents-with-better-service
- According to https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/northland-outdoors/northwest-angle-business-owner-plans-another-ice-road-from-south-end-of-lake-of-the-woods-this-winter the ice road is likely to return in Jan 2022, weather permitting, but the price will increase. Maybe removing the COVID-19 info from this page was a bit premature?
- And then there's this lovely loophole to evade Canada's COVID-19 testing, already spotted on the Point Roberts page, which should have been mentioned here, as well as in Hyder (or maybe all of Alaska) and on Campobello Island? The ice road looks to be a "go", per https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/northland-outdoors/ice-road-across-lake-of-the-woods-to-the-northwest-angle-set-to-open-this-week --unsigned edit by User:66.102.87.40
- Please make any changes you think are necessary. I think you know more about Angle Inlet than any other editors who are active now. Wikivoyage is the travel guide you can edit. Thank you. Ground Zero (talk) 16:55, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

KRFO coverage
[edit]- Swept in from the pub
It looks like a small-town radio station in southeast Minnesota is citing Wikivoyage's Angle Inlet#By car here: https://krforadio.com/this-special-minnesota-monument-is-modeled-after-famous-florida-landmark/
Not sure whether this is good or bad... this makes it look like WV is directing traffic from the rest of Minnesota to this tiny angler's camp via the Trans-Canada Highway. That's an odd Angle to take. It's already more than an hour and a half of road with no services (some of it dirt or gravel) to get from Warroad through Sprague and then north on MB308 to MB525, trying to come in from the north isn't going to make this point any less isolated. 66.102.87.40 14:24, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
