Talk:Buffalo/East Side
Two for the price of one
[edit]- Swept in from the pub
Three and a half years of work has drawn to a close: the final Buffalo district article, focusing on the East Side, has gone live, and not a moment too soon. The opportunity to write about what my hometown has to offer visitors has truly been a pleasure and a privilege, and I thank all of you for it. (Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere.)
In tandem with the East Side article, I've also wrapped up work on the closely related Historic Churches of Buffalo's East Side itinerary. It's the first itinerary article I've ever written for Wikivoyage — and as I envision creating several more in the future, I'd appreciate some feedback and/or pointers on what to do or not do the next time around.

Further breakdowns?
[edit]This article sure is long. I'm not a local, but would anyone know of smaller breakdowns which could be used instead of placing the whole east side in one unwieldy article? – Hshook (talk) 15:54, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hshook - Yes, when I wrote this article I never envisioned it being anywhere near this long - as the intro says, the East Side is not exactly the tourist mecca of Buffalo. That's a big part of why I was resistant to further subdividing the article even as I saw it growing longer and longer.
- The "Buy", "Eat", and "Drink" sections are organized geographically, and the breakdown of those sections is a pretty good guide, I think, to how the article itself might be further subdivided. Specifically, if we were to hypothetically do this I might break it down this way:
- Near East Side, Delavan-Grider, Humboldt Park*
- Kensington-Bailey, Delavan-Bailey, Schiller Park, Genesee-Moselle*
- Broadway-Fillmore, Lovejoy, Kaisertown
- *(note: Delavan-Grider, Humboldt Park, and Genesee-Moselle are currently grouped together in "Buy", "Eat", and "Drink" and would have to be split up; Genesee-Moselle's boundary is the Belt Line Railroad on the west and East Ferry Street on the north.)
- It's a very, very well written article, and I can totally understand your reasons for not splitting it up. Those three subdivisions look good to me, however I would probably leave it up to you to make the final decision (if anyone). I can help with the splitting if you feel it is appropriate – Hshook (talk) 04:11, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
Liquor stores
[edit]This will be too long to fit into an edit summary, so I'm going to write this here and link the summary of the edit I'm about to make to this discussion.
Buffalo/East Side is the longest article on Wikivoyage, which is absolutely, positively ridiculous given that it's easily the furthest-off-the-beaten-path district of Buffalo, a city that's of middling size to begin with. Shortening the article to something approaching a reasonable length is going to be a priority of mine going forward, either by tightening the prose or pruning some listings. I've decided that an easy way to do that while also solving another problem is to delete listings for liquor stores from this article en masse - BUT I do not plan to do that same for the other Buffalo district articles. I firmly believe that listings for such places are, in the abstract, useful for the traveller - this is especially true for shops that cater to aficionados of craft beer and spirits, for whom Buffalo is exploding in popularity as a destination. But the fact of the matter is, despite all the accentuation of its positive aspects that I wrote into this article, the East Side is a fairly unsavory part of town, and the liquor shops listed in this article are, in many cases, rough-around-the-edges places that may not be the best for unsuspecting out-of-towners to shop in. The last thing I want to do is give anyone the idea that my game here is to foster discriminatory attitudes in our readers, but to be frank I think ttcf trumps all those concerns. If anyone reading this has any comments on this issue, please weigh in.

- I should add that listings for places of particular interest to craft beer and liquor aficionados will be an exception to the rule for this article - a microbrewery with attached tasting room just opened in the Ellicott District and I'll be going forward as planned with adding that listing, and when Bison Distillery opens in Broadway-Fillmore next year it will also be duly noted here. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 02:44, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
- Liquor stores strike me as the type of thing that is so plentiful that we don't really need listings for them, except for particularly notable examples. Powers (talk) 01:12, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Newspapers
[edit]Is the Buffalo Criterion still in print? Main web page dead, Facebook page not very active. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:32, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for catching this, Traveler100. Through a rather in-depth Google search, I was able to confirm that the Criterion ceased operations some years ago. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 15:35, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
